Gloria Dei News The Newsleer of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church December 2015 2718 Dixie Highway, Crestview Hills, KY 41017 From the Pastor In John 17 (verses 20-21), Jesus prays for his dis- ciples, saying, "I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” I am struck by Jesus’ prayer. It is presented by John as his last prayer before being arrested and taken off to die. As such it represents something of a death bed word to us. In that terrible time, when Jesus would have had every reason to focus only on himself, he didn’t pray for himself. He prayed for his followers and for everyone who would know him because of their witness. In other words, he was also praying for us! Every last one of us knows Jesus because of someone else’s witness. Imagine that! You are a believer because some- one in your family or from among your friends did their part to witness to the goodness of God. I am a believer because people in my family, my friends and teachers did their part to witness to the goodness of God. It makes our witness vital- ly important. Just think of the people who may never know of Jesus and his saving death for them if you do not tell them. But even as you reflect on this need for your wit- ness, I hope that you will remember one more very important part of how believing happens, and that is, believing comes through the Holy Spirit. That means that the Holy Spirit of God not only desires that all people would come into a saving relationship with Christ but that the Holy Spirit is active in the process of shaping belief as well. We are believers because the Holy Spirit used the witness of someone in our family or from among our friends to open our hearts to believe and trust in the goodness of God. It seems to me that this is a very comforting prospect. It means, for example, that the work of this church is not dependent on me or any other individual because God is always at work using the witness of each one of us. This will be true of the next pastor that God sends here as well. God has prepared your next pas- tor. God has shaped him/her to be just what is needed now. He/she was not the pastor for the time that I have been here just as I am not the pastor for the time that God is unfolding in the future of this congrega- tion. I pray that you will relax and let the process unfold. The Synod has a wonderful system for call discern- ment as well as people trained to help in the process. So hold on, relax, put your head down a minute and pray for the people and the process and then trust that God knows what is best for all of us. At night when I am inclined to face the hurt of leav- ing you, I remember that God loves this church more than I do, and it comforts me. You will never be left alone. The God who loves you is here as it has al- ways been. In light of the promises of God I can truly and genu- inely say to you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ~Pastor Vicki

Gloria Dei News The Newsletter of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church

December 2015 2718 Dixie Highway, Crestview Hills, KY 41017

From the Pastor

In John 17 (verses 20-21), Jesus prays for his dis-ciples, saying, "I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

I am struck by Jesus’ prayer.

You are a believer because some-one in your family or from among your friends did their part to witness to the goodness of God. I am a believer because people in my family, my friends and teachers did their part to witness to the goodness of God. It makes our witness vital-ly important. Just think of the people who may never know of Jesus and his saving death for them if you do not tell them.

But even as you reflect on this need for your wit-ness, I hope that you will remember one more very important part of how believing happens, and that is, believing comes through the Holy Spirit. That means that the Holy Spirit of God not only desires that all people would come into a saving relationship with Christ but that the Holy Spirit is active in the process of shaping belief as well. We are believers because the Holy Spirit used the witness of someone in our family or

from among our friends to open our hearts to believe and trust in the goodness of God.

It seems to me that this is a very comforting prospect. It means, for example, that the work of this church is not dependent on me or any other individual because God is always at work using the witness of each one of us. This will be true of the next pastor that God sends here as well. God has prepared your next pas-tor. God has shaped him/her to be just what is needed now. He/she was not the pastor for the time that I have been here just as I am not the pastor for the time that God is unfolding in the future of this congrega-tion.

I pray that you will relax and let the process unfold. The Synod has a wonderful system for call discern-ment as well as people trained to help in the process. So hold on, relax, put your head down a minute and pray for the people and the process and then trust that God knows what is best for all of us.

At night when I am inclined to face the hurt of leav-ing you, I remember that God loves this church more than I do, and it comforts me. You will never be left alone. The God who loves you is here as it has al-ways been.

In light of the promises of God I can truly and genu-inely say to you,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

~Pastor Vicki

Christmas Poinsettia Plants

As part of the Christmas tradi-tion at Gloria Dei, we will once again be adorning the church with poinsettia plants. The shape of the poinsettia, also called the “Star Flower”, has be-come a Christian symbol of the Star of Bethlehem which led the Wise Men to Je-sus. The red colored leaves symbolize the blood of Christ and the white leaves represent His puri-ty. There will be sign-up sheets placed in the narthex area starting Sunday, November 29th, for those who would like to make a donation towards these flowers. As in the past, the amount we are asking is $10 per plant. These donations can be made in “Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” friends or loved ones, or, perhaps, as a special Christmas tribute to Jesus whose Birth Day we are celebrating. Please have your donation in by Dec. 13th so we know how many plants to purchase. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see the sanctuary filled with these flowers? Praise be to God for the beauty of the flowers and for all of His many blessings in our lives.

Advent Dinner December 16

The women of Ruth and Hannah Circles invite you to a delicious dinner on Wednesday, December 16, 6PM in the Fel-lowship Hall. The menu for the evening in-cludes pork roast, potatoes, vegetables, salad, and a variety of desserts. People who attend will be asked to make a donation to the Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky. The Children’s Home is a residential treatment center for boys who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. The Children’s Home also has a new residential program for teens who are suf-fering from addiction. Your donations will be matched by Thrivent Financial up to $200.00.

Tips for Coping with Holiday Stress “I will lift up my eyes to the hills -

from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2) The holidays can be a time of hope, happiness, fel-lowship and harmony but can also present a time of anxiety, stress and depression. The demands of the season are many, which can often lead to over-drinking overeating, and fatigue. When stress is at its peak, it may be difficult to stop and regroup. Trying to prevent stress and depression is key, es-pecially if the holidays have caused emotional tur-moil in the past. The following are tools to help you get through the holiday season: Acknowledge your feelings. Feelings of sad-

ness, anger, loneliness & fear are normal. Realize the holidays don’t have to be perfect or

the same as last year. Set aside differences. Accept others as they

are, not what you expect from them. Don’t abandon healthy lifestyle habits. Get

enough sleep and don’t overindulge. Take a “time-out” each day for yourself. Walk-

ing, music & prayer are good time-outs. Learn to say “no”. Prioritize your activities to

prevent exhaustion, stress & irritability. Make a budget that makes sense to your financ-

es and stick to it. Plan fun holiday activities with family/friends

but also include helping/serving others. Seek professional help if have persistent sad-

ness, insomnia, depression & hopelessness. Remember the true purpose of the holiday sea-

son – the birth of our Savior Jesus. Keep your mind & spirit at peace with prayer, gratitude and joy. Article summarized from ERH Parish Health Ministry.

Health and Wellness Observances for December 2015

The Whole Health Ministry is add-ing this as a permanent article to the monthly newsletters. We can-not address all of the health & wellness issues but we can give

you a list of the “Health and Wellness Observanc-es” for each month. Reading these each month might encourage you to seek information on the health/wellness issues that are pertinent to you. December 1 is World Aids Day, December 2-8 is National Handwashing Awareness Week, and for the month of December is: National Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention, & Safe Toys and Gifts.

THE JESSE TREE Stories and Symbols of Advent

Oh, come, strong Branch of Jesse, free; Your own from Satan’s tyranny; From depths of hell your people save; And give them vict’ry o’er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanu-el! Shall come to you, O Is-rael. 18th Century Carol What is a Jesse Tree? It is a small tree decorated with symbols portraying the spir-itual heritage of Jesus. It is a kind of “Family Tree” that was suggested by Isaiah’s prophecy: “A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse.” (Isaiah 11:1) The Whole Health Ministry uses a lighted tree, in the Welcome Center, and places cut-out symbols and hangs them on the branches. There is a symbol for each day’s Family Tree-Bible story – 29 in all. The one for Christmas Day is placed on the top of the tree. Check out the Jesse Tree to see the color-ful symbols/ornaments and to find out what Bible stories are within Jesus’ heritage.

December is a very exciting month for preschool stu-dents. In this busy month, we enjoy talking about all of the holidays that our students celebrate. We talk about

families, friends, love, giving and sharing. It is so wonderful for us to be able to share our holiday traditions and to learn and appreciate our likeness-es and differences. It is also nice for us to talk to the children about giving to other families who don’t have as much as we do. The United Minis-tries Tree is a wonderful opportunity for the chil-dren to really experience giving to others. Our families are so generous and kind! Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas! Registration packets for the next school year will be available in January. Tour dates will be post-ed in January. Please like our Face Book Page for updates.

Martha Circle will meet December 7 at 6 PM at the home Sara Kieffner for a Christmas potluck

dinner. Bring a white elephant gift (under 10 dollars) to exchange and a monetary donation for a family in need.

Ruth Circle celebrates the Reason for the season with our Annual Christmas Dinner... Hope to see all circle members, friends and significant others/spouses at 6:30 pm at The Colonial Cot-tage on Dixie Highway December 3. Reserva-tions requested by Nov. 30, call Jan at 992-6515.

Raise the roof for a school in The Gambia Thank you for everyone who made a donation to help build the roof for the St Luke Lutheran School in The Gambia. With your generosity, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will be sending over $1,300 to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Gambia to help finish the roof for needy students. The building will also be used as a church, so this mul-ti use building will educate young Gambian children, as well and house a place of worship. Thank You, Gloria Dei social committee and Bruce Southers.
