work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This

belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only

15  THANK YOU

Dear Friends and Fans of GlobeMed at Boston College, Thank you for your continuing support of our organization and mission during our second year as a chapter. After spending the previous year discovering what it means to be part of the GlobeMed network and philosophy, we worked to solidify our presence on Boston College's campus in 2011-12.  Despite the difficulties of running our non-profit without the support of the Student Programs Office, we were able to forge important partnerships with other groups on campus, most notably the Connell School of Nursing.  Internally, our group has grown significantly.  From the founding executive board of 11 in the fall of 2010, we have grown to a membership of 42.  Interest in GlobeMed at Boston College was enough that, for the first time, we had to decline some applications to join our ranks.  Additionally, young leaders emerged from our heavily-freshman general membership to fill the void which will be left by this year’s mostly-senior executive board.  Indeed, this may be the most important mark of our time as co-Presidents:  setting the stage for a group of future leaders who will accomplish much more than we ever could. Thanks again to everyone who has helped us along the way as we strive for equitable healthcare for all the elderly in Ayacucho, Peru. Ryan Finn and Dana Larsen 2011-2012 Co-Presidents

september 2010

While Boston College has a rich history of student involvement in issues of social justice, there was not yet a group focused on global health before GlobeMed at BC. In the fall of 2010, two sophomore men sought to build this kind of group after hearing about GlobeMed from friends at other colleges. Due to the enthusiasm of BC’s student body, it was not difficult to find others who were passionate about global health.  Our membership has grown from the 2010-11 executive board of only 11, to a group of 42 who are seeking to make palpable change in the lives of others worldwide.

OUR PARTNER Centro de Capacitacion de Campesino de la Universidad Nacional San Cristobal de Huamanga

KEY FACT: 45.5% of the population in Ayacucho, Peru lives in extreme poverty. ABOUT CCC-UNSCH

FOUNDED IN 1976

CCC-UNSCH Works with different community organizations focused on different things. For example, they are in contact with are community groups that control access to water source in a specific place and make sure the laws are properly enforced and maintained. They have also worked with CAPIS on capacity training for old folks and have a relationship with national/international organizations that focus on older adult health. CCC-UNSCH is always connected to the Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA) and one of their primary goals is to hold MINSA more responsible to serving population in Ayacucho, Peru. They work together with elderly to do farming projects, teach older adults about small gardens (onions, lettuce) and cultivating cuy (guinea pigs). They've set aside an ambulance fund and are trying to build a community center as a means of discussing community issues and preventative health care. GlobeMed@BC has been working with CCC-UNSCH for 2 years. "

WORKS IN AYACUCHO, PERU POPULATION: 151,019

There are two communities our partner works is involved in. The first is San Juan Bautista, a rural community an hour away from Ayacucho. Often times, in these communities, parents of kids leave town to find work elsewhere and the grandparents become the ones who care for the children. The idea behind CCC-UNSCH is that older adults should participate more in the community to better their situation, as they are currently excluded from basic services such as health care.

KEY FACT: 40% of the communities in Ayacucho are only accessible by foot.

Page 7: GlobeMed at Boston College Annual Report 2011-2012

&OUR PROJECT GlobeMed at Boston College

Why income generation and nutrition? Our focus area is aimed towards community development through income generation and preventative health. Income generation projects allows our population to afford the costs required to access medical care, as well as tackle other development issues that are inherently connected to health like buying food, better housing, etc. Preventative health measures help avoid sickness, and allow the elderly to reallocate their resources towards other needs that will improve their overall quality of living.

GlobeMed at Boston College aims to raise $5,000 to fund several income-generating

projects for the impoverished elderly in Ayacucho, Peru."

This year we funded two projects. The first is an artisan

market for the disabled elderly to sell their crafts. The second project is a community center which would go

towards promoting preventative health care and discuss other issues pertaining the communities.

This year in globalhealthU, we explored the relationship between health and poverty. We saw that global health is an interconnected issue that requires partnership, dedication and leadership to address. This was the first year we used permanent small groups, which not only allowed for more voices to be heard, but also fostered a stronger sense of community. Our favorite ghU of the year was the case study and the payspent.org poverty simulation.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature

year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the

critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

2011-2012 CURRICULUM

ORIENTATION Chapter members were

equipped with a thorough understanding of the values

of GlobeMed and explored their personal values.

POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized

poverty and sought to explore the connections between

global health and poverty.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS

globalhealthView presents: Rosemary Byrne! November 17, 2011 This was our inaugural globalhealthView event, featuring Rosemary Byrne. She spoke about her international nursing work in Ecuador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. She shared her insights about working in global health, as well as the challenges one faces when working in the field. Around 25 people attended the event.

Page 11: GlobeMed at Boston College Annual Report 2011-2012

TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS: # OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS: Community building was not very strong due to a number of reasons. We did not have an operational budget, which made it hard to put on events and hold retreats. Our unsponsored organization at BC also made it difficult to hold events at BC. As a result, our community-building suffered, creating a disjointed feeling in the organization. Some staff members reported not knowing everyone's name. Second semester we hired a second community director position to strengthen the organization, which started happening. Only at the end did members report some semblance of connecting with others in the chapter.

42

Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the

GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

“This year's summit theme focused on partnership. I never realized our closest partners are each other within each chapter, and staff members from other chapters. Partners are an extension of genuine friendships, and at the heart of partnerships is a human connection.”

-- Sahil Angelo, c/o 2014

2012 DELEGATES: Dana Larsen, Sahil Angelo, Debi Lipman, and Allie Broas

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and

workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

2012 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT

Page 13: GlobeMed at Boston College Annual Report 2011-2012

OUR FUTURE

Summer 2012: Plan the 2012-2013 the first semester of academic year. The exec board retreat should be planned for the middle/end of September, and a full staff retreat planned for the beginning of october. ghU should have at least 1 globalhealthView event each month, in addition to regular chapter function and the external ghU coordinator will work with other Boston chapters to put on cross-chapter events. Campaigns will have all events planned, at least one a month, including a bar event and 5K run. Communications will be responsible for advertising GlobeMed. Chapter members also want to volunteer at a local nursing home to contextualize elder health.

“GlobeMed has enforced the fact that practicing medicine is not limited to

working in a hospital or a private practice, but that there are so many other applications in this field. My

involvement in GlobeMed has greatly influenced my view of healthcare as a

global effort and a social responsibility.”
