I would like to wish you a warm welcome and happy new year!

Building upon Bellevue College’s solid

international foundation, OIEGI is

engaged in new initiatives to strengthen

our current international efforts and to

create a foundation for future initiatives

that will ensure that the college is at the

more student centered;

}} Become a regional center for interna-

tional education;

population;

}} Instill global perspectives into the

curriculum;

both short- and long-term, for

students and faculty;

nity for international student.

The OIEGI is in the process of applying

to the State Department for the autho-

rization to issue J-1 visas for faculty and

student exchange. Our hope is that these

new programs will boost both our student

enrollment and create new opportunities

for U.S. residents for study abroad oppor-

tunities as well as faculty exchanges.

OIEGI will publish two newsletters:

will inform the college and commu-

nity of ongoing activities and events

within the OIEGI

published weekly to inform students

about deadlines, immigration

policies, and activities, etc.

We hope to implement all of these

efforts in the spirit of connecting our

offices and creating citizens who live

and work within a diverse world and a

global human family.

OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AND GLOBAL INITIATIVES

Office of International Education and Global Initiatives Welcomes New Staff

“As we welcome the New Year, the Office of International Education would like to take a moment to intro-duce all the new OIEGI staff members to the campus community.”

In 2014, the Office of International

Education and Global Initiatives went

through many significant changes

including a name change and adding

additional staff.

As we welcome the New Year, the Office

of International Education (OIE) would

like to take a moment to introduce all

the new staff members to the campus

community.

First, we would like to introduce our new

dean, Jean D’Arc Campbell, who joined

us from Portland Community College

where he spent the past nine years

overseeing all aspect of PCC’s interna-

tional education initiatives, including

study abroad, faculty development

programs, international recruitment,

partnerships, marketing and an inten-

sive English program. Campbell is

fluent in seven languages and he has

traveled to more than 31 countries. Prior

to joining higher education, Campbell

worked with the United Nations High

Commissioner for Refugees and the

non-governmental organization, Inter-

national Rescue Committee. Campbell

also enjoys teaching philosophy and

international politics.

To continue improving the quality

of our international advising center,

in November, we recruited Bradley

Huggins from the University of

Washington as our Assistant Director of

International Success. Bradley will lead

our advisor team in assisting, guiding

and supporting our students.

The advisor team also saw tremen-

dous growth this past year, doubling

in number of staff with the addition of

three new advisors: Carla Honkanen,

Megan Gurdine and Ling Ling Yeung as a

drop-in advisor. International students

can now rely on a dedicated interna-

tional advising center team of six.

Deemed our initial point of contact, who

welcomes and assists all our visitors

daily, we have Elisabeth Bothwell at our

front desk. Finally, we also have Elaine

Davis as our administrative assistant to

offer support to the whole office.

Please find a few words from each of our

new members on the following pages.

Please read more about them and join

us in welcoming them to the Office

of International Education and the

Bellevue College campus community.

Initiatives at OIEGI

OIEGI Retention Committee FormedIn mid-November 2014, the Dean of

International Education and Global

Initiatives Jean D’Arc Campbell formed

the OIE Retention Committee to develop

a comprehensive plan that enhances

student satisfaction, successful achieve-

ment of education goals as well as the

quality of our students’ overall college

experience at BC from recruitment to

program completion.

The committee conducted a self-evalua-

tion of the OIE services by dissecting the

student life cycle into four segments to

review existing practices, identify areas

requiring improvements, and proposed

plans for implementations.

The four segments are:

Segment 1: Acceptance to enrollment

Segment 2: First quarter

Segment 3: Completion of the 1st

year and beyond (45 college-level

credits) – Projected pathways

Segment 4: Final term

As the committee discussed each

segment, we identified and agreed

on several key concepts: a) retention

starts from the first contact a student

makes with BC/OIE and must be

embraced by everyone; b) increasing

accessibility to the quality and care of

advising services would enhance the

students’ satisfaction; c) developing the

monthly/quarter/yearly calendars is

vital for better planning and informa-

tion dissemination; and d) maximizing

the student leaders’ and graduates’ help

with the delivery of a fun, interactive,

and inspiring “Welcome Week” is pivotal

for retention.

Some exciting ideas include, but not

limited to, revamping the acceptance

notification package, redesigning the

quarterly new student orientation

to more interactive, relational base

exciting events, creating the quarterly

and yearly departmental calendar for

better planning, employing timely and

accurate credential evaluation services

for all incoming students with credits

from an accredited postsecondary

institution, inviting all new students

to face-to-face welcome session with

the OIE advisors, following up with the

students who have earned 45 college

level credits to carefully plan for the

second year, realigning the probation

procedures with the College’s, and

celebrating our students’ achievements.

The committee’s mindset not only aligns

with the Student Affair’s “No Wrong

Door Guiding Principles” but also

supports the Strategic Plan’s goal such

as “Educating Students to be Global

Citizens”. Our next step is to share

the committee’s report with all OIE

members, select the most feasible ideas,

and get everyone’s buy-in to execute the

plan! We have tons of work to do, but we

are very excited!

Admissions Improvement Our GoalOIE team members across marketing,

advising, and admissions came together

in December and launched our admis-

sion improvement initiative.Our main

objective is to streamline our interna-

tional students’ application process and

shorten processing time. The team met

weekly to review each component of the

admission process looking for ways to

improve, starting with revamping the

paper application form. are pleased to

announce the release of a new student

friendly application form beginning

January 2015. have reduced the paper

application form length by half, from

four pages down to two, simplified fields

of inputs and streamlined information

gathering in order to significantly reduce

the processing time for each applicant.

The OIEGI launches three initiatives: Retention, Admissions and Student Life

Page 6: GloBelleView - Bellevue Colleges.bellevuecollege.edu/wp/sites/180/2015/02/OIE-Newsletter-W15-PRF3-020915.pdfwhere he spent the past nine years overseeing all aspect of PCC’s interna-tional

Initiatives at OIEGI

We are now working on developing an

online application based on the new

paper form, along with online payment

options that will further streamline the

admission procedure.In addition, we

are looking at various areas for improve-

ment such as developing an online

pre-arrival form into the admission

process that will support our operations.

In the coming months, we will be rolling

out many changes, with the ultimate

goal of reducing application processing

time to under 48 hours for all applica-

tions received. Stay tuned...

New Ideas to Address Student Life Issues of International StudentsThe International Student Life Initiative

is a core group of OIE staff and students

chosen to assess, make recommen-

dations and implement changes that

will enhance areas directly affecting

students from a student life perspec-

tive. The committee consists of Linda

Annable, Student Life Coordinator,

student advisers, Becky Qiao and Ling

Ling Yeung, Assistant Director of

International Business Professions

Deron Dahlke, OIE Student Workers

Ryan Phan and Vincent Soesanto

and Student Ambassador Hyesoo

Suh. Several other international

students have assisted with

the committee in various ways

including attending a meeting and

offering suggestions and comments.

The purpose of the committee is to

evaluate student life issues from an

international student perspective and

assess which needs OIE is or is not

meeting successfully and what OIE

can do to improve and enhance each

student’s experience as a student at

Bellevue College. The committee agreed

to work on five areas: First Experience

with OIE beginning with the initial

information gathering stage, orienta-

tions and the new student check-in

process, advising and student activities.

The committee’s final meeting will be on

January 27th and the final report will be

available February 1, 2015. The first area

that was immediately addressed was

helping to make our office more easily

located, reducing the frustration of new

students and visitors who often have a

difficult time locating our office. A new

pictorial map was designed and made

available for new students attending

Winter Quarter 2015. Additionally, a new

large colorful, directional banner was

installed on the street side of the fence

bordering the OIE office.

The students involved with this

committee enthusiastically embraced

the prospect of being an integral part

of change at the Office of Interna-

tional Education and Global Initiatives

and found the staff to be open and

equally engaged with the prospect of

helping new and current students feel

welcomed, connected and informed.

The entire committee is looking forward

to the implementation of our new ideas!

Student Clubs at BCDid you know that BC has 44

student run clubs and 15 student

run programs? Joining a club or

program is a great way to meet

new friends and learn about other

cultures. Students who get involved

with activities on campus are less

likely to get homesick, and more

likely to adjust to their new life.

The International Student Associa-

tion, or ISA for short, is open to any

student interested in participating

in meetings and activities; member-

ship is free. ISA holds annual events

such as the Halloween Dance, Lunar

New Year celebration, the annual

International Night, and several

other cultural events. Program

Meeting: Fridays 12:30 PM-2:00 PM

What is International Business Professions Program?

The Interna-

tional Business

Professions

(IBP) Program

is a one-year,

professional

development

program for

professionals

and students

from overseas. Serving

two groups per year (Spring and Fall)

since 1989, BC supports 90–120 IBP

students with intensive English, IBP and

academic classes leading to an observa-

tional internship with local companies

and non-profit organizations.

Currently 58 students (Group 50) are

in their final (internship) quarter, 51

students (Group 51) are

in their second quarter.

Spring 2015 expects 65+

new IBP students.

Student Housing Information Update

We are in process of

negotiating deals with

various apartment

complexes near Bellevue College that will create more affordable housing options

for international students. The deals we are seeking to complete will not require a

full month deposit and landlords will agree to accept I-20s and Passports as the only

legal documents. These agreements will temporarily address some of the housing

concerns we face as Bellevue continues to explore the possibility of building its

own residence hall for international students that would be completed in Fall 2017.

A feasibility study was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees last week.,

and we will soon start the process of selecting an architect.

Where the world comes together to learn... about international business.

The IBP Program is a one-year program preparing young professionals and current students for an observational internship in an English speaking company or organization. After college level, intensive English, and IBP classes, students participate in an English speaking environment. The IBP Program curriculum, training, and experience give you a competitive career advantage!

The IBP Program @ Bellevue CollegeStudents can draw from a growing and active network of prominent businesses

or seek out dynamic new companies for observation placement. The IBP

Program has been a successful experience for students since 1989. This success

comes from Bellevue College's high quality teaching and curriculum focused

on English Language proficiency as it relates to real world business skills.

A Student Profile StoryOver 120 students attended the

talk by Brandon Ting, founder of

Kukai Ramen. Brandon credits

Bellevue College with giving him

his start as a successful entrepre-

neur. When he first came to BC,

he was placed in Level 2 English.

He talked about going to the

writing center seven times to edit

one essay. He talked about not

getting a high enough score on

the WSA the first time to get into

UW Foster even with a 3.8 GPA and

then making it the second time.

Friends from BC started his passion

for ramen. All the resources and

faculty supported him in learning

English. At Foster he met his future

business partners (from Turkey and

Singapore) and they struggled for

two years to get their concept off

the ground. Now they have three

locations (Bellevue, Northgate

and Taichung) and will be opening

in Capital Hill and Beaverton.

Amazing story.

Brandon restated his offer to help

Bellevue College in any way that

he can. We will surely be calling

on him for our $500,000 in 50 days

campaign.
