*Global warming is a current issue in the media

with a wide variety of research supporting

different causes. I want to find the leading

reason our planet’s ice glaciers are melting.

*What is the main cause of global warming?

*The media highlight global warming to be a

problem although some research proves

otherwise. I would like to research both sides to

have a better understanding.

Page 3: Global warming

*I looked at information from Bob Corell’s Artic Climate Assessment and Paul Matewski research

*Then I looked at an alternate view from Rle Oldenburg from Naesaq Museum in Greenland and Dr. Soon an astrophysicist

*Also a New York Times article from Doha Talks about Global Warming and Climate Change

*The articles all had a good point of view but didn’t address the other side of the argument

Page 4: Global warming

*I expected to find a lot of research on this subject with multiple reasons on the cause of global warming

*I also expected some research to supported the idea that global warming does not exist.

*I hypotheses' that global warming is occurring and people are the main contributed to the problem because of all the pollution we release in the atmosphere.

Page 5: Global warming

*

*I conducted a content analysis because this

is a current issue with a lot of publicity. I

want to learn all the side of the argument

and if it is possible to change the melting.

*I researched several different sources to

gather data.

Page 6: Global warming

*

*Bob Corell, an American scientist, believes

people are the main contribution to the top of

the world melting

*Corell conducted a study called Artic Climate

Impact Assessment. In his results, he found the

temperatures in the artic is rising twice as fast

as the rest of the world

*The seas are rising and polar bears are getting

close to become extinction

Page 7: Global warming

*

*Corell’s research found when

green house gases are

released they are trapped

creating solar heat

*In 1992 Greenland had began

to melt then ten years later

much more ice has melted

*98% of the world’s mountain

glaciers are melting

Page 8: Global warming

*

*The amount of ice melting in the artic is equivalent to all

the ice in the alps (over 105 million acres of ice) in only

fifteen years

*He predicts sea levels all over the world will rise 3ft.

higher in 100 years

*When the ice melts it causes a chain effect. The snow

and ice melts then becoming dark water that produces

solar heat leading to more snow and ice melting

Page 9: Global warming

*

*Corell believes it is impossible to reverse global warming because so many green house gases have already been released that the temperature will rise no matter what we do differently

*He is certain global warming will increase the severity of our tropical storm such as hurricanes and cyclones in the pacific. Also global warming will lead to more storms

Page 10: Global warming

*

*Paul Mayewski, form USM, lead 25 expeditions collecting deep ice cores from glaciers in Greenland

*Ice catches everything in the air so the ice samples Mayewski gathered showed an atmospheric record that covers half of a million years

*The ice cores can explain the green house gas levels, whether it was stormy, and what the temperatures were over the years

Page 11: Global warming

*

*Matewski results told him human activity is responsible for

global warming

*The artic has not experienced CO2 levels like this in

thousands of years

*Something has changed to cause this melting and that is

burning of fossil fuels, releasing carbon dioxide, CO2 and

other green house gases

Page 12: Global warming

*

*Rle Oldenburg from Narsaq

Museum in Greenland believes the

climate warming is a natural

process that started in 200 BC

*When the Vikings first found

Greenland in the 10th century, the

land had no glaciers but instead

had green fields, trees, and open

waters

*The Vikings settled here because

it was a good place to farm, fish

and live. They created civilization

for a century until the climate

changed

Page 13: Global warming

*

*A few hundred years after the turn of the 11th century

the Vikings were wiped out. Greenland had began to

freeze over killing the crops and animals.

*Greenland was not the only part of the world get drop

in temperature. Rivers and canals in England and the

Netherlands also froze. People worried for their

safety.

Page 14: Global warming

*

*The climate is not constant but is always changing

*Dr. Soon, an astrophysicist, researched the eras of the

warming and cooling climate cycle

200BC- 600AD :Roman Warming

440- 900 :Dark Ages Cooling

900- 1300 :Medieval Warming

1300- 1850 :Little Ice Age (phase 1 and 2)

1850- present :Modern warming

*This research supports a natural climate cycle and not

an issue of global warming

Page 15: Global warming

*

*According to Doha Talks, Global warming is a rising

issues that needs to be addressed

*She believes this should be the most pressing issue for

world leaders

*The problems due to the use of too many green house

gasses mostly burning fossil fuels and forests

Page 16: Global warming

*

*In North America and other well developed countries, the rate of emission has dropped because of the week economies and awareness of the issue

*Many states in the U.S. have set renewable power programs that have played a large role in reducing emission

*Although emission had decrease in some of the advanced countries, the developing countries such as China and India continues to increase in emission

Page 17: Global warming

*

*Coal is the dirtiest and

most carbon fuel

* Emission rates increased

5% in the past year

Page 18: Global warming

*

*I found most researchers believe human activity is the

main cause of global warming.

*Each researcher had a different opinion on how to solve

the problem or if it even needed to be solved.

*The majority of the research I found supposed my

hypothesis with more detail.

*I believe my information would be more accurate if I

researched more people to have a wider range of data.
