The History of Bonfire Night!
Bonfire Night is an annual event dedicated to bonfires, fireworks and celebrations. !
In November 1605, the infamous Gunpowder Plot took place in which some Catholics
plotted to blow up the English Parliament and King James l, on the day set for the king to open Parliament. The men were
angry because the king had treated them badly and they didn't like it. !
Guy Fawkes was given the job to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder and to light the fuse. On the morning of 5
soldiers discovered Guy hidden in the cellar and arrested him. The trail of
gunpowder at his feet would never be lit. !The story is remembered each 5th November
when 'Guys' are burned in a celebration known as "Bonfire Night".
1
Modern Bonfire Night!
In Great Britain, Bonfire Night is associated with the tradition of celebrating the failure of Guy Fawkes'
actions on 5 November. !The modern festival is, therefore, on 5 November,
although some commercially-driven events are held at a weekend near to the correct date, to
maximise attendance. !Bonfire night's sectarian significance has generally
been lost: it is now usually just a night of revelry with a bonfire and fireworks, although
occasionally an effigy on Guy Fawkes is burned on the fire. !
Bonfire Night celebrations can pose a risk to public safety due to the possibility of fires, injuries, or
fights. For example, in London, calls to fire fighting services are nearly tripled on Bonfire
Night. !The use of fireworks may lead to dangerous pyrotechnic incidents. The tradition of Bonfire
Night has also been criticised for its environmental impact.

Children and Sparklers
A sparkler is simply a handheld firework that emits sparks, and is relatively safe if held at a suitable
distance. These are typically used by children aged 5 and over to encourage
them to have fun. !
Sparklers are a staple of every family Bonfire Night; and provide much of the
most memorable magic for small fireworks fans.
!But we do need to bear in mind that sparklers always need handling very
carefully. Why? Because they can get up to six times hotter than oil in a frying
pan.

SafetyFireworks can be great fun. Unfortunately, every year, people get hurt because they fool around
with fireworks. Last year over 900 people required hospital treatment from accidents involving
fireworks. !!Safety with sparklers must always be the
biggest consideration of Bonfire Night !Always Wear Glover !
Always Supervise Children !Always Light Them One at a Time !Don’t Give Them to Drunk Adults !
Put Used Sparklers in Water or Sand !Keep Well Away from Fireworks !
Don’t Use them Indoors

Project Scope
The number of accidents among children on Bonfire Night is growing
every year. !
The aim of this product will be to promote safety whilst celebrating
Bonfire Night, providing an opportunity for children to join in with the celebrations and stay out
of harm. !
With this project we want to focus on children of Great Britain, of both genders, aged between 5 and 10
years old, living in towns and cities, who will have access to backyards
and public parks.
6
Expectations
The price of the product should be no more than £10 (around 20000 Korean Won). !
The target buyer of the product will be the parents of children aged 5-10 (so it should be designed to be
used in an environment monitored by adults). !It should be no larger that 20x20x20cm and no heavier
than 1.5kg so that children can use it themselves and it must be handheld. !
The product must be safe to use and remove the use of fire on bonfire night (i.e. using light as an alternative) !The product does not necessarily have to look like a sparkler but should still full fill the same function of entertaining children outside with a bright (emitting)
theme. !We have two main workshops, woodwork and metals as
well as access to laser cutters. We do not have access to 3d printing or injection moulding. Other processes
and materials can be discussed. !Do not make the product too small as it may be a
chocking hazard.
