READY? STEADY. GROWTo be best placed at the beginning of your legal career, you need to be in the best place. Shearman & Sterling is one of the world’s leading international corporate and commercial law firms since opening an office in the City of London over 40 years ago.

For the best start, start hereAs a Shearman & Sterling trainee you’ll be working on a regular basis with colleagues from our offices around the world, including the Americas, continental Europe, the Middle East and Asia – which means it’s likely you’ll have the opportunity to travel and experience an overseas secondment. Looking for opportunities a little closer to home? In London, we represent major UK and international companies and financial institutions, advising clients on complex corporate transactions. Capabilities that have contributed to substantial growth in the business and size of the office, making the London office key to our global practice – and an enviable place for you to work, learn and grow.

An international firm with a true global footprint, our ability to offer integrated English and US legal advice is what makes us different – and successful.

For more than 15 years, trainees have helped shape our success story and played a pivotal role in the firm’s growth. It’s no surprise; thanks to a small intake, the quality of the graduates we take on is much better than most City law firms – and now it’s your turn to shine.

Big business, big smilesWe’re proud of our culture and the friendly environment we work in – and even though we have a London staff of 300 working on cutting edge deals, we’re still small enough to know each other on a first name basis.

Support is key, including the focus on working in smaller teams (affording you more responsibility and helping you learn faster), whilst our full equity partners get involved in the things you’re working on, helping to guide you at every stage.

You’ll also be given real responsibility for the way in which you work, with a host of big name clients – such as HSBC, Nokia and Manchester City FC – ensuring that every new day is as interesting, challenging and rewarding as the last.

Jodie Reindorf - Trainee SolicitorHigh quality, complex work“At Shearman & Sterling, you can be sure of getting access to exceptional quality work from an early stage. Shearman’s focus tends to be on getting the high-end, more complex work that is more bespoke and tailored to the client. This presents excellent opportunities not only to learn new legal concepts, but to develop a more commercial understanding of the needs of the client, and how its business operates.”

Charles Elsom - Trainee SolicitorA truly inclusive culture“The working atmosphere is very much collegiate and supportive. You will be working in fairly small teams during a transaction, but those teams will change on the next deal so you gain exposure to the knowledge of a wide variety of qualified lawyers – each of whom is very approachable and willing to answer any questions you may have. I have never felt as if I was working alone. It is always a collective effort and even as a trainee you are treated as an invaluable member of the team.”

Joelle Wong - AssociateA calendar full of social events and worthwhile causes“The social side at Shearman & Sterling is really exciting and features something for everybody! As a trainee, you’re encouraged to take part in pro bono and charity events – and that’s on top of sporting activities and a dedicated trainee committee too.”

Andrea Calla - Trainee SolicitorHighly rewarding global opportunities“One of the biggest benefits of being a trainee at Shearman & Sterling is the range of global opportunities available. From working with global clients and colleagues around the world on headline grabbing cross-border deals, to truly experiencing the global culture of the firm on a secondment abroad, the quality of the international exposure a trainee experiences is priceless.”

THROUGH FORWARD-THINKING, WE GIVE SOMETHING BACK

At Shearman & Sterling we take every opportunity to try and give back to our local community. As well as general charitable activities, we have four main charity and CSR partners throughout the calendar year:

• Wellington Primary School (who we have worked with for over 10 years) – providing reading assistance, a Business, Enterprise and Employability programme, legal clinics for parents and teachers, fundraising and an annual Christmas party

• Walworth Academy – a local sixth form college to whom we provide intensive work experience for employability skills, as well as a mentoring programme

• The Spitalfields Crypt Trust – a local charity who we work with for fundraising, legal advice and hosting their meetings and events

• Our Annual Charity – this is chosen by vote at our annual Charities Quiz. All fundraising activities throughout the year such as bake sales, marathons, abseils, sky dives and so on go towards this worthwhile cause.
