• Global demand is likely to come from sectors such as packaged water, wine, RTD (ready-to drink) tea and coffee drink, craft beer

Aerosol dispensing technologiescontinuous improvement on the aerosol can manufacturers side and valve manufacturers
Decorative techniques enhance metal containers, creating tactile and visual appeal
Alternatives to BPAthere has been some experimentation with materials such as vinyl, acrylic, oleoresins and polyester; the lamination of plastics to metalis another alternative as it eliminates the need for BPA-based coatings
Digital printingoffers the possibility of personalised packaging boosting the brand status
and engaging with the consumers
New can end technologiessuch as easy-open or peelable variations, printed ends and tabs, full aperture ends, innovative closing systems, etc.
Thermochromic and UV inks
Self-heating/chilling cansinnovation in this area is driven by consumers convenience and potential energy consumption
Automation of handling for bulk metal packaging
this area is constantly growing supported by Industry 4.0 –automation and digitisation

Trend #1: Circular Economy
• Aluminium beverage cans are the world’s most recycled drinks
containers
• Lightweghting in recent decades has improved the sector’s
sustainability profile
• Circularity of the metal material is an ideal example mainly
because it can be constantly recycled
• As per Eurostat the overall recycling rate for aluminium beverage
cans in Europe is above 70%
• Within Europe, over 3 million tonnes of steel and aluminium
packaging are now recycled every year

Trend #3: Decorative techniques – a world of creativity
• Manufacturers have embraced digital printing, which offers numerous opportunities
• Digital printing is ideally suited for many of the limited-edition products now being launched across the food and beverages industry, due to its effectiveness over shorter print runs
• Techniques such as embossing and debossing have become more widespread
• e.g. leading beer brands, such as Heineken and Stella Artois
• Tactile effects created using an overvarnish, which changes the appearance and feel of the can itself
• for applications such as beer, brewers are often keen to add a ‘wet’ or ‘frosted’ look to their packaging
