Activity Sheet 2: The conflict in SudanIn this activity you will learn about the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Work through the instructions for Google Earth, reading the information in the placemarks. You will need this information to plan a poster communicating to the pupils in your school about the situation there and think about ways that your school can help.

1. Open Google Earth and enter ‘Crisis in Darfur’ into the Fly to search box and press enter.

2. You will be taken to Sudan where you will see a number of blue place marks. To keep things simple please untick placemarks B-G in the left-hand column (see image above), except placemark A.

3. Click on placemark A and read a summary of the crisis that is happening in Darfur, taking notes of the important information you find there. Once you have read this information click on the link provided (see image overleaf). This will open more placemarks giving you more information, photos and eye-witness accounts of lives in Darfur.

4. Work through the placemarks, which give you an insight into the troubles there and show you some information about the United Nations World Food Programme.

5. There is much more information available on Google Earth about the crisis. If you’d like to learn more then click on the USHMM: Crisis in Darfur button in the Global Awareness Layer (see image below). You will be able to find photos, videos and eye-witness testimonies about the crisis.

6. Now that you know more about the crisis in Darfur, work in groups to research ways that your school can help. Use Google to search for charities that work there – what do they say they need?

Create a poster letting the pupils in your school know about the problems there and what they can do about it. Should they write letters to their MP? Try to raise money for charities that work there? It’s your decision.
