The Global Health Council is the world’s largest membership alliance of health professionals, concerned citizens and organizations dedicated to saving lives and improving health throughout the world. For over 35 years, the Global Health Council has worked to ensure that all who strive for improvement and equity in global health have the information and resources they need to succeed. We are the voice for global health.

HOW WE WORK

We prioritize urgent and ongoing global health issues to keep the public, policymakers, domestic and international agencies and institutions, and the global health community informed. To do so, we:

• Advocate for policies that ensure quality, accessible health care services for all, especially the poor.

• Focus public and leadership attention on diseases that can be treated and prevented at reasonable cost.

• Promote the investments needed to support effective policies and programs.

• Support global health professionals with high-value information and net-working resources to inform their work and increase its visibility and impact.

• Invest in future health professionals through the university program, New Investigators program, and briefings for visiting scholars.

As the largest membership alliance advocating for health across the world, we serve as a powerful voice for building action and progress on a global scale.

Our members are a diverse mix of public health professionals, advocates, policy- makers, students, business leaders and concerned citizens in countries around the world.

Our organizational members represent the full spectrum of activity in the global health community: a wide array of direct service NGOs and community groups, policy and advocacy organizations, lead-ing academic and research institutions, pharmaceutical companies and other corporations, and foundations.

The work of the Global Health Council focuses on five core health issue areas:

Women’s HealthSignificant gender-based health disparities affect women’s rights to enjoy access to primary health care, voluntary family planning, maternal health care, and other essential sexu-al and reproductive health services.

Child HealthMillions of children die each year from preventable and treatable causes resulting from inequities and lack of access to basic health services, made intolerable by the fact that we know what to do to save their lives.

HIV/AIDSDespite increased investments in prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, infections are still on the rise and the epidemic is becoming more focused in women and the most powerless members of society.

Infectious DiseasesInfectious diseases are still a major cause of death, disability and social upheaval for millions around the world; they cost billions in lost economic productivity, and their spread puts everyone at risk. Health Systems DevelopmentAll communities in less-developed countries need access to efficient and competent health care that can provide equitable access to preven-tion, care and treatment for those diseases that take the greatest toll.

HIV/AIDS

Nearly 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS,

80% of whom do not have access to treatment.

Children’s Health

Currently available and inexpensive interventions

could prevent more than 6 million deaths

each year.

Malaria

Every year, this prevent-able and treatable disease

infects over 300 million people and kills a million children.

Women’s Health

Over 200 million women who would like to plan their

next pregnancies still lack access to family

planning services.

Health Systems

Four million additional health professionals are needed in poor countries

to combat global health problems.

Tuberculosis

More than 8 million people fall ill with TB each year, and new deadly forms of

TB are spreading.

Measles

Thanks to worldwide efforts, deaths from measles

have decreased by 40% over the past decade.

Tropical Diseases

350 million people are infected with one or more of the five major treatable

tropical diseases.

Polio

Although nearly eliminated in recent years, polio is

showing a resurgence in 7 countries.

PolicyWe highlight health issues that need attention. Through a regular series of forums, briefings and policy dinners, we bring together experts, implementers, and engaged leaders of civil society to share best practices and debate appropriate action.

Community Networks Our community networks bring together local leaders to provide essential and influential voices for advancing programs and legislation to fight the most devas-tating global health problems.

PublicationsThrough our publications and website we disseminate the most current and pertinent information that contributes to understanding and action on key global health issues. Publications include the bimonthly magazines Global HealthLink and Global AIDSLink, and regularly produced Policy Briefs and Technical Reports.

Annual International Conference on Global HealthSince 1973, we have hosted a confer-ence in Washington, DC. Widely regarded as the premier annual event in the global health field, our conference is designed to provoke discussion, debate and dialogue on the critical issues and strategies that the global health com-munity must address to save the lives of millions. It typically attracts 2,000 participants from over 60 countries.

International AIDS Candlelight MemorialThe annual International AIDS Candle-light Memorial is one of the largest grassroots mobilization campaigns for HIV/AIDS awareness in the world and reaches hundreds of thousands of people in over 100 countries. It occurs on the third Sunday in May and is led by volunteer coordinators.
