Necessity of new metrics for entire Datacenter
It is necessary to create a usable and agreeable Metrics to express energy efficiency of the entire data center with both “IT equipments” and “Data Center infrastructure”.
“PUE” metric, TGG created, is widely used and accepted throughout the world.PUE is understood as a metric which has a focus on the Data Center Infrastructure.
PUETotal Energy by Data Center
Energy by IT equipments=
Infrastructure(Power, A/C etc)
IT Equipment(Server, Storage,
NW)
Category Change in “PUE” number
Improvement on Energy Consumption will change PUE
Effort of Energy Consumption will not appear on PUE
– i.e. Highly Efficient IT Equipment will not necessary yield good PUE number.

Global Harmonization of New Metrics
In Feb. 2010, the 2nd International workshop of EU, U.S., and Japan was held. At the workshop all parties agreed to continue the work on establishing a method to measure the entire Data Center efficiency.
2nd workshop on metrics of DC energy efficiency Agreement
All agreed that IT Equipment inclusive of entire Data Center based metric is needed.

Usefulness of the DPPE By the separate application of DPPE’s 4 sub metrics for each line of responsibilities, the entire effort for the Energy Efficiency of the Data Center could be divided into 4 different responsibilities.
Entire Data Center Efficiency must be doubled! So, we need to double the
DPPE number.

1. CIO determines total goal of DPPE
2. CIO decides goals of sub-metrics and tells them to managers
3. Managers determine plans to achieve each goal.
1.2 x 1.4 x 1.2 x 1.1=2.2 > 2

DPPE Measurement Trial in Japan
Outline Purpose
DPPE Measurement Trial within 2010 in Japan.
Schedule
Subjects
Jul-Sept: 1st phase of the measurement trial. Sept: Analyze the 1st
phase.
Target subject Data Centers will be 20 in Japan.- Mainly, GIPC, JDCC, JISA, ASPIC and others’ member Data Centers.
By measuring DPPE at actual DCs, find problems of DPPE, and verify the effectiveness of the metrics.
Note: Japan Data Center Council (JDCC), Japan Information Technology Service Industry Association (JISA), ASP・SaaS Industry Consortium (ASPIC)
