Spring or Fall is when our industry seems to have a lot of Shows. I just came back from the 5th China International Remanufacturing Sum-mit, which was very well attended, George Davis just went to the ERA Show, and now we have the Chicago-Auto-mechanika April 24–26, The APRA European

Technical Workshop in Paris, France April 23–4, and The APRA Electrical Workshop in Chicago May 1-2. Obviously you can’t attend them all—as well as I can’t attend them all. But how do you choose? I choose based on what my current needs are. Do I need technical information? Do my technicians need additional training? Is Networking my num-ber one need? Or do I need marketing intelligence?

If your need is Networking, then the Chicago-Automechanika Event is where you want to be. First of all it’s FREE, so there’s an easy decision. Second, they're expecting about 1000 people, so I have a pretty good chance of networking with someone there. Third, the APRA is holding an Educational Seminar (again FREE), and that gives you the perfect environment for networking and also learning something. Now if your after technical training then you have opportunities on both sides of the pond (as they say). Both training venues have excellent speakers and in addition, the Chicago event has a swap meet, so if you're looking for that hard to find part, come and check it out. Both technical training events have a small fee associated with them for attendance, but it does include lunch and a networking event.

I wanted to go back to the 5th China International Remanufacturing Summit because first of all, the APRA and Duxes (the event holder) signed an agreement for collaboration in China and to build further our Asia/Pacific Division. Why do I think this is the right time for this to happen? Because as I was making a presentation at this event, I noticed that half of the attendee’s were Westerners, English speaking people with extensive remanufacturing backgrounds. In the front row we had the GM Global Remanufacturing team from Grand Blanc, Michigan, next to them you had Dynamic Manu-facturing from Chicago, and then you had ATC from Oklahoma. In addition there was a strong contingency from England headed up by ATP and AutoCraft as well as people from Liebherr, ZF, Volvo Construction, and Porshe. There were also Core Brokers like Gobbi from Italy. So it speaks volumes when we talk about the Remanufactur-ing Industry being a Global Industry, especially as multiple car platforms are now Global Platforms. So in a way, this world is getting smaller because within the remanufacturing industry, everyone knows everyone, which makes it more competitive and requires you to stay on top your game. Net-working is crucial if you want to have an edge.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the up coming events and as always, thank you for your support of the Remanufacturing Industry, it’s a great time to be a part of it!

I always welcome response or rebuttal to my comments at [email protected]

Respectfully,

U.S. New Auto Sales Revenue Tops China By 39 Percent

TrueCar Inc., the negotiation-free car buying and sell-ing mobile marketplace, found that the total market value for new vehicles sold in China, the world’s largest market by volume, trailed that of the U.S. by as much as $161 billion last year, based on a compari-son of pricing data.

Sales in China were a record 19.7 million new autos in 2014, according to the China Association of Auto-mobile Manufacturers, 19 percent more than the 16.5 million new cars and light trucks purchased by U.S. consumers. Yet, with an average new vehicle price equivalent to $20,805, based on a TrueCar analysis of manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRP) for more than 750 models and trim levels, Chinese sales may have totaled $409.9 billion versus $570.9 billion in the U.S., where MSRP averaged $34,537 in 2014.

“While the growth of China’s new vehicle market over the past decade has been impressive, the total value of that market remains considerably lower than the U.S. and will remain so for some time,” said John Krafcik, president of TrueCar. “Vehicle prices will continue to rise, yet global automakers competing for

China’s consumers must also continue to share half of everything they make in the region with domestic market partners.”

New vehicles sold by domestic Chinese brands had an average MSRP of just $15,706, while foreign makes commanded an average MSRP of about $32,278, based on TrueCar’s analysis of all models and trim levels listed on ChinaAutoWeb.com. China has led the U.S. in new vehicle sales every year since 2009.

Sales in that fast-growing market may reach a pro-jected 21.1 million new units this year compared with an estimated 17 million sales in the U.S. In contrast to the U.S., average transaction price (ATP) information that includes manufacturer incentives and discounts isn’t readily available for China.

On a total volume basis, including new and used autos, the U.S. remained a bigger market last year with a combined 53.5 million purchases, more than double the 25.7 million new and used vehicles sold in China, based on TrueCar analysis. The combined value of those U.S. sales, based on new vehicle MSRPs in 2014 and average transaction prices for used autos, was $1.18 trillion compared with $468.5 billion in China, TrueCar finds.

describe here, least of which is a Recond mode to recover batteries that has been deep discharged. A profile of the voltage and current in each mode can be seen on supplied literature.

It is not a fast charger and cannot be used for start-ing…but it is one of those chargers that I can leave on a battery overnight with confidence and without worrying what shape I’ll find the battery the next day or after a weekend”

I noticed since then, the company has introduced more capable models with better performance that takes them to the leading edge of the battery charger technology.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the a more powerful version of them shown in the 2015 ERA Expo in Davenport, Iowa last month, where J&N presented them in their booth. The model 56-642 (MUS 25000) shown by J&N has a 25 amp capability (as compared to 7 amps of the one I own) is a powerful and com-pact units that is nearly indestructible.

As I said in my past article, these chargers are not suitable for fast-charging a battery and are not used for starting. But if you are looking for a suitable charger that you can leave on a battery overnight and make sure it is not going to damage anything, this is certainly an economically feasible option.

My CTEK has been used since 2008 and seldom a day goes by that it is not used. It is holding up well and hardly ever gets hot enough to be of my concern. A more powerful one is sure worth trying.

BMW Battery Registration...!

Newer version of the BMW automobiles, particularly the 5 and 7 series as well as the others require that when a new battery is installed in the vehicle, it must be registered with the vehicle’s PCM

Since there has been a little confusion about this and particularly there has been a huge and large pool of absurd comments given on various BMW enthusiast site and DIY crowd, it is necessary to shed a little light at this and explain the concept.

Most of the BMW models that need battery registra-tion are equipped with a special AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery but not exclusively. There are some that still have the traditional flooded cell lead-acid batteries. The AGM type batteries on BMW are black and the normal batteries are white in color.

The highly controlled and calibrated charging system on these vehicles include an IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) that collects information regarding battery voltage, battery temperature, and the charging or dis-charging amps that are going in and out of the bat-tery. IBS then sends this information via data line to the PCM, that in BMW lingo is called DME, for Digi-tal Motor Electronics. DME will analyze the informa-tion received from IBS and act upon that based on the parameters that are advocated by Advanced Power Management feature of these vehicles.

The alternators adaptable to this system have a COM terminal that receives information from the DME as how to charge the battery, and how high the charging voltage needs to be.

Obviously since the gradual deterioration of the battery due to age and use is inevitable, there are

In the spring of 2008 while teaching an APRA-sponsored class in Auto-mechanika-Canada Expo in Toronto, I came across the CTEK battery charger and was so impressed by it that wrote about it in this column that in part said: “Remembering that old commercial 'It’s not

your father’s Oldsmobile!'…Looks like the simple and familiar battery chargers have not been immune to the technological advances in automotive service field and they have also gone hi-tech.

Where use of the automatic battery chargers which maintain a constant voltage on the battery and reduce the charging current accordingly, as well as introduction of the AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries such as Optima and Odyssey that require slightly higher voltage setting, have also added to the complexity and requirement for special chargers that can accomplish these functions.

Restoring life into sulphated batteries (desulphation) and pulsing a start up signal into the completely run down batteries to initiate a charge cycle is also another feature of newer generation of battery char-gers which makes it quite different than the chargers we were use to for ages.

I came across this battery charger model Multi US 7000 that is built by CTEK of Sweden AB in Auto-mechanika-Canada show and was so impressed with its features that I had to have one! The features are too long and detailed to explain here, but this charger has a 14.4 (normal) and a 14.7 V setting recom-mended for AGM batteries that allows the charger to work in the full automatic range. A 13.6V (supply mode) can provide a 7 amp current at constant volt-age which is a great substitute for keeping the PCM and other memory devices alive while performing service requiring a battery disconnect. (Figure 1)

Very sophisticated electronics initiate the charge cycle (especially if the battery is run down real low) with a Desulphation phase, once that is accomplished, a Start phase will trickle a charge into the battery to prepare it to receive the Bulk charge, where the main part of charging is accomplished. Upon reaching this stage, an Absorption phase is accomplished to finish the charging cycle. After this phase, the battery voltages is monitored once every 10 minutes and if it drops below 12.9 V, a 5-amp pulse phase will be initiated maintain the battery in full state of charge. This charger has many other provisions, too long to

some changes in the parameters that are different than when the battery was new. By continuously monitoring the battery condition, IBS conveys the required charging details, and then the DME will in turn respond by controlling the alternator via the COM terminal. (Figure-2)

Now that’s when the battery registration comes in. Once a new battery is installed, it certainly cannot be charged at same ways that the 6 or 7-year old worn battery was getting charged. So the required registration is to input information to DME (PCM) to let it know a new battery has been installed, so the counters can be set back at the same points that the new battery was.

This is usually done by a dealer level scan tool but some high-priced aftermarket scan tools are able to

The case in point was a 2009 VW Jetta with 2.0L Diesel engine. The alternator warning light (BAT light) was staying on and the battery would run down unless charged repeatedly.

The Bosch 11134 alternator installed on this engine may look innocuous (that is if you could see it), until you figure out how much work it takes to take it off engine.

A fuel filter assembly must be removed from its base and set aside, then the A/C compressor has to be loosened and wire-tied hanging from the engine to access alternator’s bottom bolts. After the cooling fans removal, there is barely enough room to work the alternator out.

The alternator was bench tested, and found out that the voltage regulator, still having a lot of brush life left was blown (Figure-5) and the output terminal of the alternator had been so hot that melted the output post and needed to be replaced. Additionally, the output cable had become so hot that its eyelet needed to be replaced also. Battery was charged and tested to

accomplish this task also. With factory and higher-end scan tools such as an AutoLogic with BMW software and such, it is possible to change the type or the AH (ampere-hour) of the battery being installed if it is different than the original battery type or rating. However a changeover going from a flooded cell bat-tery to an AGM is considered an improvement, the other way around is not recommended.

There is also a simple aftermarket device available at a very moderate price, made by a PC-based scan tool manufacturer named AutoEnginuity. Their SR-01 Ser-vice Reset Tool is used to reset the oil service interval counter and also register the newly installed battery, as long as the battery has been replaced by the very exact type and capacity that the car came in with. It does not allow changes for the battery type or capac-ity...which incidentally the latter is specified in AH (ampere-Hour) and not by Reserve Capacity (RC), which is given in minutes. (Figures 3 and 4)

As a final note: remember BMW’s battery registration is inputted by AH figure. To change the figure from RC into AH, the most common formula is RC/2 + 16. That is to say a battery with 100 Minutes Reserve Capacity is nearly equal to a 66 Ampere-Hour bat-tery. AH is not a measure of the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) of the battery.

Cause and EffectInvestigating why a unit has failed may lead to prevention of a subsequent failures and a possible warranty return. And if the job has a time-consuming R&R, then it becomes utmost important to find out why the unit failed to begin with.

be fine. So the question was what caused this alterna-tor to work so hard.

An updated OE Bosch regulator (F00MA45303) and an INA clutch pulley were ordered from J&N. The OE regulator cost only a few dollars more than after-market version, and the price could easily be justi-fied, given the labor required for R&R.

After the alternator was installed, we tested the parasitic drain and found it had a whopping 260 mA drain which indeed was the culprit for the alter-nator failure. I performed an Auto-Scan with our VCDS (Vag-Com Diagnostic System) scan tool that is made for VW and Audi vehicle and has dealer level capability. It called up and communicated with every module except the Audio and Navigation. That gave us a direction as what to look for next.

The radio was not powering up at all, and when its fuse was disconnected, 250 mA of drain went away. A call to the owner revealed that the audio had been off quite a while, and he is in the process of changing the radio with an aftermarket one.

The point is finding what the cause of the alternator failure was and addressing the drain issue, it perhaps prevented a comeback with a failed alternator, saving us a very expensive and time-consuming ordeal, not to mention the unhappy customer.

Well...that’s all for this issue. As you might be aware, APRA is having an Electrical Clinic in Chicago on May 1-3. I am looking forward to see many of my colleagues there. Until then,...keep up the good work.

Effective leaders wear many hats and have the most difficult responsibilities in any organization. Leaders are expected to serve as a role model for the people who work for them, must coordinate their work, resolve conflicts, must promote employee growth and development, represent employees and your depart-ment to management and outside parties, and also create a motivating environment so that employees can achieve superior performance. On top of all of these leadership responsibilities, most leaders also have technical and/or organizational responsibilities which many times become a priority because of lean staffing, customer demands and senior leadership expectations.

Good leaders aren't born, but are developed and evolve through hard work, consistent effort and an awareness of several factors that influence their success.

In order to become a better leader, we must first understand what our inherent leadership style is. Typically, leaders can be placed in one of three catego-ries: autocratic, democratic, or laissez-faire. So what style are you?

Autocratic Leaders

Autocratic leaders tend to be highly opinionated militaristic. Their mantra is, "I'm paid to think; you are paid to work" and as you can imagine, this style rarely gets the best performance from employees, because most employees don't like to be treated so impersonally. Moreover, these autocratic leaders deny themselves suggestions from and viewpoints of oth-ers that are often very helpful when figuring out how to solve problems or tackle new opportunities.

Democratic Leaders

Democratic leaders, by contrast, see themselves and their employees as a team. Their slogan might be, "We're paid to think and work as a unit." Most employees would rather work for a democratic than

SESCO REPORT:Are You An Effective Leader?

autocratic leader and democratic supervisors tend to get the full benefit of their employees' ideas, opinions and views. Leaders who use this participative, team-oriented style tend to demand more time to solve problems or analyze opportunities, because they negotiate, discuss and consult with their teams as much as possible before making a decisions.

Laissez-faire LeadersLaissez-faire leaders provide general direction and overall guidance, but they give their staff as much freedom as possible. A laissez-faire boss may say, "Do this however you want, as long as you get the results we need and don't violate company policy." This hands-off leadership style may work well with highly trained, self-motivated workers who neither need or want close supervision such as in professional positions/organizations – doctors, lawyers, CPA's, engineers and other related firms.

Leaders who have developed reputations as success-ful managers didn't just luck into them. Part of their success can be credited to recognizing and avoiding several common pitfalls:

Belief that one leadership style fits every employee and situation. Managers who use only one approach to leading cannot get the best performance from everyone, because individuals react differently to different leadership styles and their reactions may be either positive or negative.

Overly autocratic or dictatorial tendenciesAlthough an autocratic approach demands the least effort and conscious thought, employees are generally excluded from the decision-making process except its tool to carry out what the boss thinks should be done. Managers who take it upon themselves to define problems and decide how to solve them sometimes run themselves out on a limb and end up sawing it off.

So, how do you rate as a leader?Leadership Qualities: Check Yes No or Need to Improve

1. I'm comfortable giving direct orders and acting assertively when necessary.

2. I can work as a collaborator, coach, and colleague with my group when the situation requires it.

3. I have little difficulty allowing others to use their own judg-ment and employ their own methods to do a job.

4. I prefer to supervise people directly rather than from a distance.

5. I would rather let workers decide how to do a job than dictate to them how to go about it.

Review and ReflectAnswer the following multiple-choice questions by circling your best answer; answer true / false questions by checking the box with the best answer.

1. Which of the following statements is true of leadership styles?

a. No style is ideal.b. Managers should be autocratic leaders as much as possible, because

employees expect and respond to close supervision.c. A democratic leadership style is generally the best to use when dealing

with a crisis.d. Experienced, mature subordinates react negatively to laissez-faire leaders.

2. The most effective leaders use one style of leadership consistently.

3. Successful leaders get to know their employees as individuals.

4. Which of the following situations generally require an autocratic leadership style?

a. "This project has a three-week deadline; it's identical to the one you completed in ten days last month."

b. "I'm going to assign Mary to that job; she has done it several times in the past three months."

c. "I've just hired a bright, ambitious new assistant, but he has no experience with the type of work we do here."

d. "I'm not quite sure how to set up the schedule for this production run, but several of my people have done that type of thing before."

5. Which of the following situations generally require a democratic leadership style?

a. "If we don't ship this order by 3:00 p.m. tomorrow, we'll lose the contract and have to lay off 15% of our workforce."

b. "Higher management has changed the frequency of your activity report from every two weeks to once a month, but the format is same as before."

c. "I'm not certain what's causing the problem; it could be traced to several areas in my department."

d. "Mike says he understands our rules on lateness, but he has clocked in 10 to 15 minutes late on four (4) of the last eight (8) workdays."

6. Which of the following situations generally require a laissez-faire leadership style?

a. "Jack isn't a total expert on this type of work. I'm putting him on the job because the experience will help him increase his knowledge and promotability."

b. "I've found that Janet lacks the self-confidence to tackle an assignment like that without occasional guidance from me."

c. "Data processing says the new minicomputer must be installed where Bob's desk is in order to hook up the cabling correctly."

d. "You can go to lunch whenever you've restocked the shelves and set up the equipment for the orders we're going to run this afternoon."

A tendency to adopt the same approach to leader-ship one of your more impressive former managers used. The trouble with this is that you are leading an entirely different group of people under a different set of circumstances than your role model faced. It is important to let your own technique evolve and take shape and base it upon the nature of your group and the types of problems and challenges that your job presents. You can't, and shouldn't, be a clone of a previous boss, no matter how exceptional he or she might have been.

Good leaders adhere to the following:They always consider the individual that they are managing. For the first time in history there are four different generations working in the workplace. Each generation thinks differently, needs different leader-ship styles, values jobs and personal lives differently and as such, a good leader will recognize and under-stand the needs of each individual within the work-place and manage toward that individual's needs.

Good leaders consider each situation as an opportu-nity. Good leaders will step in, take charge, make deci-sions, allocate resources, assign responsibilities, and ensure that the work gets done right and on time.

Good leaders emphasize results over methods. Those leaders who emphasize results over methods develop confident, competent subordinates who think for themselves and approach problems creatively. They empower workers to think to the best of their abili-ties and employ their own resources all day, everyday and for the benefit of everyone.

Finally, good leaders stay in touch with their employ-ees as individuals and as a team. Employees respect leaders who communicate directly with them. Good leaders have to be seen and this is best accomplished by managing by walking around. Managers who appear to be aloof or too busy or who isolate them-selves behind desks, walls or secretaries sometimes earn contempt from their employees.

human resources makes in handling difficult people problems. These include:

2. Inappropriate language in advertisements, interviews with applicants and in offer letters. In the screening and hiring process, common issues include:

Improper language in job advertisements such as "male," "female," "young," "healthy," etc.

Too many hiring managers ask about personal and/or protected characteristics during job inter-views which sets the employer up for a discrimi-nation lawsuit if the applicant is not hired. These include "How would you get to work?", "Do you have proper transportation to work?", and "Would family create issues in working overtime or on the weekend?"

Some hiring managers provide an inaccurate description of the job. Sometimes work is difficult and requires long hours and the hiring manager doesn't properly reflect the demands of the job. Soon, an unhappy employee will leave because the job was not clearly described.

3. Wage and Hour compliance. Most organizations who we have audited have misclassified positions, re: exempt vs. nonexempt status. Many positions are considered by the organization as exempt and thus paid on a salaried basis without overtime. In reality, many of these positions are, in fact, nonexempt and thus are required to be paid overtime thus creating liability for the organization.

4. Privacy assumptions and violations. Too many employers fail to advise employees to expect no privacy on their company computers. It is critical that employers place employees on notice through company orientation and effective policy.

Human Resources also possess a great deal of sensitive information about individual employees. It is critical that Human Resources ensure that

In summary, good leaders are developed over time. Every organization must be committed to providing resources and training necessary to develop good leaders. SESCO has been developing leaders since 1945 and we have a number of individual as well as group training and development programs that will help develop your most valued asset — leaders.

Fair Labor Standards Act AlertKeHE Distributors has requested that the Supreme Court review a 6th Circuit decision finding that their company's sales representatives were nonexempt from the FLSA and thus due overtime for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week. The 6th Circuit determined that these food distributor sales reps were simply order takers and merchandisers and as such, these duties did not meet the definition of a "sell" for the Outside Sales Exemption.

SESCO will monitor this case closely as it could have a significant impact on many Outside Sales/customer service representatives and their exemption status. In light of this case as well as a very active and punitive Department of Labor in applying exemptions as well as potential increase in the salary requirement test, all organizations should undergo a FLSA audit to determine if your compensation practices are compli-ant. If they are not, SESCO provides for very specific recommendations as to optional pay plans as well as processes to alter pay plans with least disruption. Contact SESCO to explore our exclusive Professional Service Agreement and subsequent auditing practice.

Avoiding Common HR MistakesIn our consulting practice, we are contacted when there is an issue or challenge. Clients don't call us when things are going well, but when they need help. As one can imagine, we receive and answer all types of inquiries involving employees in all industries and across all 50 states. Based on our practical experi-ence, we have identified common legal mistakes that

Sesco Report — continued from page 6 employee information is maintained confiden-tially, especially when outside third parties are requesting information.

5. Training and performance. As noted in the feature article, most organizations fail to train supervi-sors. And supervisors are the ones who typically get you in trouble. They say inappropriate things, don't understand basic rules and regulations such as Wage and Hour, FMLA, workers' comp, etc. As supervisors are considered agents of the organiza-tion, the actions of the supervisor creates organiza-tional liability.

6. Record keeping/I-9 issues. We rarely find in our auditing practices proper documentation to include required documentation by law such as the I-9 Form. Further, documentation is rarely discovered that supports screening and hiring decisions and, more importantly, terminations.

7. Breakdowns in communication. Many organiza-tions forget or don't make it a priority to notify employees about policies and procedure changes, outcomes of investigation or discipline issues, or unsatisfactory behavior or quality. In fact, many organizations will not properly document perfor-mance appraisals reflecting behavior issues, thus creating an inconsistent trail of documentation, again, creating significant liability.

8. Accommodations. Most organizations are unaware that the Americans with Disabilities Act requires us to consider accommodations to include when an employee is disabled, is pregnant, has a family and medical leave issue, or other medical issues.

ReMaTec2015 Amsterdam largest ever

The Amsterdam based ReMaTec shows had their inaugural edition in 2001. Fourteen years later, this June will mark the eighth edition of ReMaTec Amsterdam. This year’s record-breaking edition will fill two of the large exhibition halls at Amsterdam RAI, almost doubling last edition’s show floor. Over 175 exhibitors are confirmed and we are expecting a total number of 225 companies to take part in the show which would be a 20% increase on last edition.

Reasons for growthNiels Klarenbeek, ReMaTec Show Manager, explains. “Exhibitors at ReMaTec shows tend to like the niche character of the event. Unlike other trade shows, there is not too much “waste” in the aisles as anyone who is seriously involved in automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing, no matter where from, is present at the fair. The 2013 event attracted visitors from no less than 63 different countries of which 64% had decision making authority with purchases. This makes that every single visitor can be a prospec-tive customer. There’s often no need to extensively explain what business an exhibitor is in, as visitors are targeted and well informed.

Part of the reason is that over the past few years, the ReMaTec show became more important in the exhibi-tors’ marketing strategy. Many of them like to make a bigger presence by creating larger stands. In addi-tion, the show has become so well established in the remanufacturing industry that we have weekly new sign-ups for exhibitors at the show.

Last but not least the size of a trade show can be linked to the state of its industry. A rapidly growing automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing indus-try stimulates its primary showcase event, ReMaTec Amsterdam, to grow. Since the last edition, the auto-motive and heavy duty remanufacturing sectors have been growing considerably. Despite the financial crisis that tremendously hit the automotive sector in general, remanufacturing has continued to grow. The general trends towards sustainability, cost effective-ness and qualitative alternatives for new replacement parts have driven an ever greater demand for reman products. We see that reflected on the show floor.”

ReMaTec2015 is welcoming many first-time exhibi-tors who will receive special recognition on the show floor and in the show catalogue. All companies tak-ing part will be published on the ReMaTec website www.rematec.com and of course can be found in the show guide.

The online registration for visitors will open in March.

ReMaTec2015 earns Certified Trade Fair status from U.S. government

ReMaTec2015 has been selected to participate in the Trade Fair Certification Program (TFC) under the U.S. Depart-ment of Commerce (DoC). The program is intended to help non-US companies participate in overseas trade shows with U.S. exhibitors and to facilitate links between them and existing / potential U.S. partners. The DoC says “ReMaTec2015 represents a high-quality, multi-facetted opportunity for U.S. companies to market overseas.

ReMaTec2015 will be held at the RAI Convention Centre on June 14-16 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In addition to the ReMaTec show, the RAI centre will also host other high level remanufacturing events under the umbrella name Amsterdam International Remanufacturing Week 2015. The 2015 ReMaTec Trade Fair Certifica-tion Program will target buyers from Germany, France, Middle East and Latin America. The selection is based on the Department of Trade’s outreach and show management research. Under TFC, the U.S. government assists show promotion through its embassies and consulates and invites official trade delegations to attend. TFC also provides exhibitors with hands-on guidance such as export counselling, market analysis and matchmaking services. As part of the TFC program, ReMaTec2015 will host an American Breakfast together with DoC in order to bring together the show’s US exhibitors and the invited, international trade delegations. “Although ReMaTec already attracts a world-wide audience, the involvement of the U.S. Department of Trade means that we’re able to reach even more visitors,” said ReMaTec2015 Show Manager Niels Klarenbeek, Amsterdam RAI. “This is a very positive development because it demonstrates what our exhibitors and the industry really have to offer.” “In attracting official trade delegations, our co-operation with the U.S. Commercial Service has proved suc-cessful in 2011 and 2013. Greater global participation adds value to the show – not just to our U.S. clients but to everyone involved. We’re proud of the DoC recognition, indeed,” Niels Klarenbeek added.

Work safe: A piece of my mind, and no, I can't really spare it.George Davis

Let's be careful, out there.

People that have worked with me know I spend a great deal of time talking about accident prevention. The main reason is that as a manager, and a trained first-aid provider, I spent a lot of time dealing with wounds. Let me tell you I'd rather do anything else. I have also had to deal with fires, my own injuries, property damage, and the occasional explosion. Again, not my favorites.

This week an old friend is dealing with the aftermath of a house fire. This started out as a vehicle fire, but as you guessed, the vehicle was in his garage at the time. He had replaced the radiator in a truck, taken it for an extended test drive, and then parked it in the garage. He went in the house, and moments later found his garage in flames. His home is way out in the country, so it took 25 minutes for the fire depart-ment to get there. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire before the house was a total loss. Only the garage was ruined. Unfortunately the house reignited in the early hours the next morning and this time became a total loss.

It's one thing to say accidents happen, and to a large extent that's true. The question to me is always what are the lessons learned. In talking with my friend there is no one thing he wished he hadn't done. Indeed, he and his dogs survived unharmed, and for a time, the fire was extinguished. That says some-thing in itself. I can't think of anything either, short of working on everything outside. Vehicles some-times simply catch fire. In this case, we don't know why. There isn't enough left of this particular truck left to perform a meaningful investigation (the truck was dragged from the garage in flames and left to burn while the attention went to saving the house). Every piece of flammable material is gone, down to the back tires.

From that, what went right? He is glad he had insur-ance, and had paid for something called a total loss rider. The rider gave him additional recovery money. Secondly, he is glad he purchased large commercial grade fire extinguishers for his garage. Although ulti-mately futile, these allowed him to dampen the fire initially. Last, he had the presence of mind to close the valves on his propane tank, preventing it from becoming involved.

Most of us have sprinkler systems in our businesses and hopefully an array of charged fire extinguishers close at hand. Also, I should hope, a fire plan. What is the nearest exit? What systems need to be shut down? Truthfully though, my own home is lacking. Like many of you, I do some serious automotive work on my own cars. However, there is no auto-matic fire suppression in my garage, worse I have only a two pound fire extinguisher. Almost useless in a fuel fire.

I don't know about you, but I will by building up the fire prevention systems in my own home. Taking an inventory of my tools and other possessions for insurance purposes. This best outcome is that this is never needed.

Regeneration of spare parts

Currently, each part used in cars, trucks, agricultural machinery and construction can be regenerated. The main activity of the company is Airstal regeneration air compressors and electronic power steering (EPS).

The origins date back to the regeneration of auto parts forties of the last century. Then, the first association dealing with this issue, eg. APRA - Automotive Parts Association remanufacturer . At the same time, in the United States and Great Britain There are also companies dealing this issue in more commercialized. This undoubtedly contributed to World War II and the related need to re-use components. Then their regeneration has become an important part of the automotive market.

A modern example of this activity is the company Airstal. Established in January 2005, from the beginning is a member of APRA, and is currently one of the largest distributors of remanufactured air conditioning compres-sors in Poland and Central Europe, providing them more than 15 000 per year. This number is steadily increasing.

Professional regeneration "from A to Z" requires the best, specialized equipment and systematic training. Airstal, fulfilling these conditions, it is able to implement many new solutions. In recent times, this research is related to the air-conditioning compressor regeneration technology for cars hybrids differed significantly, especially in the final stage of the corresponding tasks relating to traditional testing process compressors. Have successfully introduced to the company's recovery offers a completely new product, which is the elec-tronic power steering EPS ( electronic power steering ).

Car air conditioning compressor and compressor for hybrid cars

We must also keep pace with the constant technological progress in the field of production of the original and then undergoing regeneration. Competing with each other, their manufacturers are trying to make in the imple-mentation of structural changes at the plant regeneration as a cause of trouble with the acquisition of small components used in the professional regeneration. In the case of air-conditioning compressors this is a much bigger problem than the introduction of a new refrigerant HFO-1234yf.

All in all, however, this technological race and frequent changes in product design create companies like Airstal still new opportunities and useful for the entire automotive industry busy for years to come. Indeed, all recon-ditioned parts while maintaining the highest standards of new products perfectly replace the original, but they are definitely cheaper and at the same time better than cheap substitutes of unknown origin. Airstal grants for their products 24-month warranty, which is the same as in the case of OE components.

J-2534 Flashing: Essential Automotive MaintenanceContributed by Bob Chabot

Those who won’t flash are limiting their future

“It’s not if you offer J-2534 flashing to customers; it’s when,” asserted David Hobbs, a senior automo-tive aftermarket trainer for Delphi Automotive. With this “hook,” Hobbs grabbed the attention of shop owners and technicians attending his seminar titled Diagnosing Under the Dash, hosted at the Mobile Air Conditioning Society Worldwide’s 2015 Train-ing Event and Trade Show — a gathering that serves the $12 billion per year mobile air conditioning and engine cooling industry.

Don't Try to Fly by the Seat of Your Pants“It’s crucial that shop owners ensure technicians are properly educated before offering J-2534 ser-vices.” Looking at J-2534 flashing from a high level, Hobbs shared six steps in performing module reprogramming:

1. Baseline the reprogramming session — Is pro-gramming warranted? Good websites to check are NASTF.com and OEM1stop.com.

2. Don't waste your time; determine whether a mod-ule can be programmed — Some modules cannot be programmed at all. They come with built-in, unalterable programming, so you have to replace the whole module with a new one.

3. Prepare for programming — Ensure the equip-ment you use meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of the vehicle brand you are working on. In addition, prepare the vehicle beforehand (Do you have a secure, reliable, unin-terrupted power supply” Is the car battery good?) before setting up and connecting the necessary hardware. Should the reprogramming session requires the replacement of any parts, be sure they are properly installed and functional first.

4. Transfer the calibration to the vehicle module — You need to know where to find vehicle-specific calibrations, and if there are calibration options you need to choose from.

5. Validate that the module has been updated to the current calibration — Don’t assume; make sure it got there!

6. Cleanup — After configuring a module. To restore a vehicle to its full functionality may require you to perform a few more tasks. For instance, a newly reflashed Body Control Module (BCM) module may have to be reintroduced to the airbag module, so that both function as intended.

As shown in the overview of J-2534 above, a J-2534 device and a laptop link service information and software data to the vehicle.

40 Percent of the Vehicles In Your Shop Have One or More Modules That Need Flashing

“Those who continue to ignore J-2534 flashing are missing service opportunities that can be sold as eas-ily as informing your customers that their vehicle’s onboard computers have a number of updates that need to be downloaded. In addition, some vehicles fixes today can only be addressed now by performing these software flashes. In the very near future, this will become more prevalent. It’s time to get prepared now.”

According to Hobbs, there are two things shop own-ers and technicians need to understand before taking on flashing as a service/repair service:

1. Know the difference between reprogramming and reconfiguring — Reprogramming is process of electronically erasing and replacing data with an updated version transferred via the inter-net or cloud, either across cables or wirelessly. Reconfiguring is a process that doesn't require an internet connection. It is between the vehicle you are working on and your scan tool (which may be your laptop). Examples include setting options from a menu of selections within a body control module (BCM) or instrument cluster.

2. Not every scan tool is your friend — Some scan tools will flash only, some will also let you to repro-gram, and some will even enable you (with a sub-scription) to emulate a factory scan tool (e.g. Toyota Techstream, Ford IDS). The closer you are to having or emulating an automaker’s scan tool, the better.

“Think networks and systems, not just components and circuits; when diagnosing and J-2534 flashing,” Hobbs concluded. “Have a plan; J-2534 isn’t some-thing you can just jump into. Do not underestimate the value of getting the right training. Purchase factory scan tools for the primary lines you service, and a good general aftermarket scan tool for the other brands. Invest in a J2534 device to supplement your scan tools. Then gather other resources and learn where to locate online flashing information and instructions to take the guesswork out of servicing.”

“Flashing opportunities abound in the vehicles that enter your shop every day,” Hobbs emphasized. “Examples include turning off false malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) warnings, eliminating pattern failure components, battery rundowns, drivability complaints, HVAC performance issues, fuel economy issues, rough idling, component longevity enhance-ments, and more.” He then shared his experience dealing with three issues.

Battery Rundowns Can Bewilder “Issues that rundown batteries quickly are rela-tively easy to diagnose,” Hobbs noted. “It's the ones that are slow that kick your butt. It’s critical than technicians look at battery rundowns properly. For instance, in general, everyone calls battery rundown problems 'shorts,' when in fact they are 'opens.’”

It's critical to understand how equipment differs, how they are similar and to exercise caution. For example, don’t assume your instruments; you need to 'zero' [recalibrate] them frequently. Something I learned from Karl Seyfert, executive editor for Motor Magazine, is to verify that you're working on the correct circuit by using a millimeter to perform a diagnostic test across the circuit’s fuse."

"In addition, to safeguard your multimeter, install inline fuses on your meter leads. You also want to avoid power disruptions as much as possible, because when repowered, the intermittency of para-sitic drains modules can be problematic. One more piece of advice: ultracapacitors are already replacing batteries for starting large trucks, but you can expect to see ultracapacitors in passenger vehicles soon.”

“Also, remember that a battery’s state of charge does not its state of health,” Hobbs cautioned. “The ability to produce proper voltage does not mean the ability to provide the proper amperage to start the vehicles. So make sure you've got a good battery first.”

“To set up the vehicle for parasitic draw testing, turn off ignition and remove the key. Open, then close doors, and give equipment time to power down prop-erly. Know the usual suspects, such as sticky relays, electronic modules that won't power down, aftermar-ket accessories, etc.). Then generalize at the fuse panel. Check for voltage drop across the fuse with lights powered on. We're looking zero across the fuse.”

Blower Diagnostics “If a blower motor blows it's fuse repeatedly, a likely cause of the problem may be too much current from a defective blower motor,” Hobbs advised. “You still need to verify the root cause. For instance, if a cabin air filter is never changed and/or becomes plugged, the current draw on a blower motor will go down. If the evap cooler becomes covered, the same thing can occur.”

"Voltage drop tests are a prudent check for suspected high current circuit issues. But use a ‘known good load’ substitute that allows you to dial in known loads. Multimeters and amp clamps are other useful tools, but beware that microcorrosion can cause fret-ting, which can affect conductivity and skew your testing and diagnosis. To delay or offset fretting, purchase and use a conductivity enhancer, such as Stabillant 22.

“In my experience, more than 40 percent of the time General Motors software updates are not in a GM technical service bulletin or ‘as built’ data list," Hobbs explained.

"Visit tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web(if that link doesn't work — web address names can change without notice — then Google 'GM Cal ID' and look for a similarly named link). Input the vehicle identification number (VIN) of a GM vehicle you are working on. Alternately, Hobbs provided 2G1WB5EK7B1332903 as a demonstration VIN. Once you've entered a valid VIN, follow the drop-down menu to access a list of all software calibration updates and options.

Not Every J-2534 Related Problem Has a TSB “Software issues are becoming more common, as engineers don't get the job completely done before a model is sold,” Hobbs said. “Just think about your personal laptop or phone and how many software updates you receive. Understand that software can be corrupted and any point, be it at the factory, in the shop when another vehicle module has been repro-grammed, and others."

“Set yourself up for success. Be diligent with your equipment and tools. Be sure your laptop you use with your J-2534 interface device is plugged in (not battery dependent). Also, disable popup block-ers and disable virus protection that may impede a programming session. Ensure your internet con-nection is reliable. Finally, modify your laptop’s power setting to prevent it from going into standby or hibernation."

Here’s something many technicians are note aware of,” Hobbs cautioned. “Many, but not all software updates are available via Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). There are many notable exceptions, which

J-2534 Flashing— continued from page 14 can make J-2534 flashing problematic. For example, 40 to 50 percent of time in my experience, General Motors updated software is not in a GM TSB or in ‘as built’ data files. Rather, it’s available on certain GM calibration identification websites.”

To access the most current information, Hobbs sug-gested technicians use this weblink: tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web. "Sometimes website address names change suddenly and without notice, so if this link doesn’t open, Google the phrase 'GM Cal ID' to find a weblink with a similar name. Upon accessing the website, input the vehicle identification number (VIN) for the vehicle you are working on, then use the series of drop-down menus to access a list of all software calibration updates and options. Note that the most recent part number is listed at the bottom of each drop-down menu."

Hobbs ended with one last piece of advice. “If it isn't broke, don't flash it; don’t create unnecessary work for your self. But when all else fails, flash it."
