CHANCELLOR VISITS MUET GLIMPSES OF GOVERNOR'S VISIT The Chancellor of Universities of Sindh, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan, Governor Sindh, visited Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro. While addressing the senior faculty members he said that g"overnment was giving top priority to the qualitative education and had raised its share from 9.5% to 2% of annual budget to provide better infrastructure, equipments and other learning material at all educational institutions. He assured the audience of his full support and cooperation in creating better opportunities for the teachers to acquire education of the highest level in order to provide the younger generations with the best quality education. He emphasized on boosting the research work in the university. Addressing the gathering, the Sindh Governor said that various development projects in the educational institutions were 'launched not only to provide better infrastructure and academic facilities but also to ensure supportive atmosphere within the educational institutions. He maintained that due to these steps the enrollment of the students in various institutions in the province has raised to a double. However, he made it clear that the proper guidance of the students was needed both from parents and teachers to groom them in such a way so that / they could become the main source of national development. The Sindh Governor while expressing his satisfaction over the performance of MUET Jamshoro stressed upon the need for more active monitoring committees for bringing more improvement in the quality of education. Earlier, the Governor inaugurated three development schemes that include building of Institute of Information Technology, Communication Technology Centre and Central Library of MUET. Soon after his arrival, the Vice Chancellor of MUET Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput briefed him about the development schemes and academic activities of the University and said that all three new development schemes have been completed with the total cost of Rs.255.779 million within the stipulated period. The Chancellor termed the visit as one of the most pleasant ones and was very much satisfied with performance of MUET. He appreciated the role of this university in producing competitive work force in the fields of engineering, science and technology. Besides the faculty members, the Vice Chancellor oflliC.., .•••.• ,..., University of Sindh Dr. Mazhar-ul-Haq Siddiqui and the Vice Chancellor of Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS) Prof. Dr. Noshad Shaikh were present on the occasion.

Dr. Iliahi Bux Shaikh, graduate of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro elected asVice-President of the Internatinal Commission of Irrigation and Drainage from Asia region. He was a graduateof 1971-Batch.Dr. Shaikh is presently serving as Chief Engineering Adviser, Ministry of Water and Power, Chairman FederalFlood Commission, Chairman National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage Pakistan, Chairman NationalCommittee on Large Dams Pakistan, and Chairman Dams Safety Council.The commission has elected a Pakistani Engineer to represent Asia after a gap of 12 years and earlier formerWAPDAChairman Shamsul Mulk had assumed the same office.The commission is a non-profit and non-governmental international organization dedicated to enhancingworldwide supply of food and fiber for all by improving water and land management and productivity of irrigatedand drained lands through appropriate management techniques under the cover of United Nations.Dr. Shaikh has 39-years experience in the fields of project management, coordination, planning andsupervision of medium size and mega projects in public and private sector. He has been working with thefederal govermnet for the last 20 years. Mehran University Vice Chancellor and faculty members havecongratulated Dr. Shaikh on this achievment.

MUET GRADUATE IN WORLD BODY

WELCOME OS-BATCH

The 08-batch of Mehran University of Engineering & Technology began the golden eraof its educational career when it started taking classes at MUET on r: January 2008.The students from various parts of country, especially of Sindh Province, cametogether to mark the beginning of their higher studies that will raise them to thegreatest heights. The freshly inducted batch was welcomed by the senior faculty ofrespective departments with a graceful orientation day held in each of thedepartments. They were briefed about the way things work here in MUET. The facultymembers, in their separate addresses, guided the students regarding regulations,traditions and operations of the varsity. Students joined their respective departmentsand galloped off in studies on the very first day. Everybody looked determined tocompete with his/her full strength to lead the way at start up. The university officialsbelieved that this batch will continue to keep the traditions of hard work in MUET andwill surely contribute its share in keeping the varsity at the top most level among publicsector universities in the country.

MUET FU DS STUDY ON ASSESSMENT MODEL FORSECUR TV OF IRELESS SE SOR NETWORKS

In a quest of security solutions for IT industry, the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies(IICT) and the Project Directorate of Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoro have beenfunding a PhD research program of Engr. Adnan Ashraf. The project is headed by the foreign professor ofHigher Education Commission in MUET Prof. Dr Manzoor A Hashmani, and an eminent professor Dr B SChoudhary. The vice chancellor MUET Prof Dr A. Q. K. Rajput, Director IICT, Prof Dr A. K. Balouch and theadvisor Planning and Development and Project Director, Engr Ghulam Sarwar Kandhar are monitoring thefunding, and status of the research undertaken hitherto.The motivation of research is the security risk of deploying wireless sensor networks in applications duringdisaster recovery (earthquakes, floods), habitant monitoring, traffic light control system, dangerous cargoshipment and smuggling of unauthorized material across Pakistan's borders with Afghanistan, Iran, India, andChina. The uniqueness of the research is to develop a security assessment model composed of numericallyvalued factors where every crucial factor relates to a series of processes customizing security in anorganization.

MEHRAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS SECURED 2nd POSITION IN'ALL P.AKISTAN DIGITAL INNOVAT.ION COMPEiTol:T.ION'

To promote the advancement of digital technologies inPakistan and to strengthen link between industries andUniversities, "All Pakistan Digital Innovation Competition2007" was organized by the "College of Electrical &Mechanical Engineers (EM E), NUST (National University ofScience & Technology)". Students from engineeringuniversities all over the country participated in the competitionunder various categories.A group of students nominated by Prof: Nazimuddin Sheikh,Chairman, Department of Mechanical Engineering MUET,Jamshoro, comprising of Mr. Ayaz Mehmood Panhwar, Mr.FayazAhmed Memon, Mr. Muhammad Ali Abro, Mr. SundeepKumar and Mr. Ameer Ali Zardari participated in thecompetition by working on ? project 'Design of Gear Box by

using CAD Software" under the supervision of a faculty member, Mr. Muhammad Atif Khan Qaim Khani.The projects participating in the competition were evaluated in three different stages/phases by a panel ofexperts nominated by the leading universities, colleges and industries. The project of Mehran UniversityStudents got 2nd position under Mechanical category. Members of organizing committee highly appreciatedthe project in the context of utilization of digital technology in the design and development of products.

UET FACULTY CONFERRED WITH 'BEST TEACHER' AWARD BY HEC

Two faculty members of MUET awarded with 'Best Teacher' awards by Higher Education Commission (HEC)Islamabad in a charismatic ceremony on 26th January 2008. The Registrar, MUET, Dr Muhammad AslamUqaili, Professor Department of Electrical Engineering was recognized as the Best Teacher of the year 2005.Dr Aftab Memon, Chairman Department of Telecommunication Engineering was bestowed with this award inthe following year 2006. Their services in the field of teaching and research were recognized by HEC. Thefaculty members received these awards on account of their extraordinary services for the university. Both ofthe faculty members worked very hard in their respective fields and produced appreciable results in the shapeof their students leading the way all along their careers.Dr Aftab Memon is also the pioneer of introducing Wi-Fi technology in the university. It is due to him thateveryone, especially students, can enjoy wireless access to internet within the university premises. Hisservices in teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes have been significant over the years.Dr Muhammad Aslam Uqaili, being Registrar, is one of the most dynamic personalities of the varsity. Hiscooperation and coordination with students is worth notifying. He remains one of the best teachers andrespectful personalities.

INTERNET SERVICES PROVIDED ~T THE ROOMS OFSTUDENTS' HOSTELS AT MUET, JAMSHORO

Prof. Dr. A. Q. K. Rajput, Vice Chancellor, Mehran University of Engineering & Technology, Jamshoroinaugurated Internet/Intranet services in the rooms of students' hostels at Mehran University of Engineering &Technology Jamshoro. During the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Dr.Aftab Memon, Director ICP Center, briefedthat now the students at hostels can use MUET Internet/Intranet facilities in their rooms. In this way the MUET'slong term goal of providing such facilities to students has been achieved. Dr. Aftab Memon also said that soonMUET, Jamshoro will add 16-Mbps to its existing 4-Mbps Internet speed. This high speed Internet will helpconduct multiple sessions of video conferencing, interactive/online lectures between MUET and any remotelocation such as a foreign university.The Vice Chancellor of MUET, Jamshoro, Prof. Dr.A. Q. Khan Rajput greatly appreciated Dr.Aftab Memon andDr. Mujeeb-ud-din Sehrai, Provost Hostels, for providing Internet/Intranet services to students at their hostelrooms. In his address the Vice Chancellor said that it was a very pleasant moment for him to see studentsbenefiting from the advanced IT services while being in their hostel rooms. The students can now access digitallibrary services provided by HEC, in which there are thousands of research papers, journals, and e-booksavailable for guidance. This will greatly enhance the research level at the university.

The Department of Civil Engineering, MUET Jamshoro,organizes the 1st International Conference onEngineering Management: Benchmarking ManagementPractices in Developing Countries. The ICEM-2008 is tobe held on March 4-5 in Mehran University Jamshoro.The conference has attracted a large number of local andinternational researchers, academicians, practicingengineers, and post graduate students. Researchersfrom USA, Canada, Australia and many other developedcountries have shown their utmost interest in theconference. Research papers from researchers aroundthe world have been received.The conference is organized in collaboration of HigherEducation Commission (HEC) Islamabad and PakistanScience Foundation (PSF). The aim of conference is toelucidate the ideas of engineering management and itsapplications in modern engineering industry and otherservices. The conference will provide an opportunity tobring together researchers, educators, and practitionersrepresenting educational institutions, governmentagencies, contracting organizations, engineeringconsulting companies, financial institutions, and otherengineering related organizations from all overthe worldto share their ideas in the field of engineeringmanaqernent to guide the delegates of developingcountries to follow these practices. SEMIN~R ON LATEST tiRENDS IN WASTE MANAGEMENT &iliREATMEN:-r IN DEVELOP-ED COUNTiRIES & PAKISTAN

The department of Chemical Engineering, MUET Jamshoro, organized one day seminar on 'Latest Trends in WasteManagement & Treatment in Developed Countries & Pakistan' under HEC-BC (Bristish Council) link programme incollaboration with the Brunei University, United Kingdom.The seminar attracted more than 200 nominations from districtgovernments, universities, research organizations, Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (PEPA), Sindh EnvironmentProtection Agency (SEPA), NGOs, industries, students and community representatives.Engr. Suhail A Soomro, coordinator of the seminar and link programme, informed the audience about the objectives of'Waste Management & Treatment' link programme. He said the programme aimed to improve the community awarenessabout the environmental pollution caused by waste generation that harms the mankind. He hoped that different studiesthat would be carried out with the cooperation of the district governments would provide opportunities to the localgovernments to improve the municipal solid waste disposal scenario in their areas. This is possible only with impartingtraining, assisting in devising the system of waste collection and disposal and improving awareness in the community.Dr A J Choudhary, the speaker on the occasion, delivered lecture on sustainable waste management principles andtreatment technologies. He elaborated the basic principles of waste management and treatment explaining the role ofstakeholders, industry, community and society in addressing the issue. He briefed about the early and the currentpractices of waste management in developed countries and legislations. The technologies used in Europe and UK arelandfill, composting, incineration and recycling. He explained the advantages and disadvantages of different technologiesgiving comparison of technologies used in Europe and USA. He suggested that Pakistan may use landfill in a propermanner and recover the methane gas that may be used as a domestic fuel. The gas may also be used as a fuel in powergeneration plants. Electricity may also be generated by direct incineration of municipal solid waste. In the concludingsession, participants gave their views and suggestions for future interaction between the link teams to address the issue.Certificates were distributed among the participants.

The administration of MUET, Jamshoro has been verykeen in promoting sporting activities in the university.Continuing the sporting spirit, a friendly cricket matchwas played between the Tigers and Warriors of CivilEngineering Department. The faculty members and alarge. number of students gathered to witness thisrejoicing game of cricket.The Warriors, under the leadership of Mohsin Memon,won the toss and elected to bat first. In their allotted 12overs, they managed to get as many as 112 runs on theboard; setting a daunting target to Tigers. Tigers, underthe captaincy of Muhammad Arif, reached the target inthe final over of the game and won a hard fought match.The spectators cheered every ball. The tight finishof game made it very much pleasing for the teachersand students present there to have got their time worth.The Chairman Department of Civil Engineering, Dr.Muhammad Soomar Khatri, awarded prizes at the end.The Man-of-the-match award went to Abdul HaqRabbani for his brilliant 49, Asif Bilal (46 not out) wasnamed Best Batsman, the Best Bowler award went toNajeeb Abro, and the Best Fielder award, as always,went to Shabbir Hussain Khahro. The end of this gamemade everyone go home cheerful with comments on theperformance of each team.
