AIRMANSHIP1. Plan for a launch failure prior to

every launch2. Knowledge of immediate actions3. Effect of wind speed and direction4. Position of other aircraft in the circuit

Symptoms of a launch failure

Cable Break:- Loud bang- Possible sudden pitch up- Marked deceleration

Winch Failure- Gradual or marked deceleration- Speed reduces towards 50 kt

Immediate Actions

Cable Break:• Select approach attitude (unless below 100 ft)• Pull cable release twice• Wait for approach speed• Decide if there is room to land ahead

Winch failure:• Select a level attitude to accelerate• If speed does not increase treat as above

Immediate actions

Can I land ahead - YES

Re-check approach speed then carefully select airbrakes

Make small heading change if necessary to avoid obstructionsCarry out normallanding ahead

Immediate actions

Can I land ahead - NO

Re-check approach speed then turn downwindIf below 250 ft continue turn onto best heading

Wings level by 100 ft.

If above 250 ft roll out downwind

Fly downwind until 250 ft or the nominated downwind boundaryTurn into windWings level by 100 ft If height available – intercept

Launch Failure Below 100 ft

It will not be possible to select the approach attitude.

The appropriate attitude to select will depend on the height at which the failure occurs.

In general the lower the height the failure occurs at the higher the attitude required.

At a very low level it may be necessary to hold the initial climb attitude!

1. Select an appropriate attitude

2. Pull cable release twice

3. Land ahead

4. Do not use airbrake until after round out, and then

only with caution
