This month wersquore bringing you a very interesting story about a young bee keeper in the area and a couple of arti-cles submitted by the Mills County Public Health We are
currently looking for more young writers so if you know anyone who may be in-terested please let us know Next month we will bring you articles about our high school spring sports information on the library and much more

Governor Branstad signed a proclamation Thursday February 28 declaring March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Iowa According to the State Health Reg-istry of Iowa approximately 1640 Iowans are expected to be diagnosed with col-orectal cancer in 2013 ldquoToo many families are affected by this debilitating disease which is 90 percent treatable if detected earlyrdquo said Sheri Bowen Mills Co Public Health Director ldquoAs many as 60 percent of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided if everyone aged 50 or older were screened regularlyrdquoUnfortunately many Iowans still havenrsquot received that important message Accord-ing to the 2010 Iowa Behavioral Risk Fac-tor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey only about 64 percent of Iowans aged 50 or older report ever having been screened
for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is preventable treatable and beatable You can reduce your risk of ever getting colorectal cancer by bull Quitting tobacco bull Maintaining a healthy body weightbull Eating lots of fruits and vegetables bull Limiting alcohol intakebull Limiting the amount of red meat (beef pork and lamb) and processed meat that you eat bull Becoming or staying physically ac-tive

Senior Meghan Gray joined FC-CLA her freshman year and upon joining she was required to create a project However Gray went above and beyond evolving her project into a business
Now three years later Gray Bee Honey is a recognized small busi-ness run by both Gray and her mother
ldquoIt started as a project for FC-CLArdquo said Gray ldquoBut I [believed] could actually do thisrdquo
Although the business started small and private it slowly grew as the Grays added more hives and began selling their merchandise throughout the community
ldquoIn the summer I sell at the Farmerrsquos Marketrdquo said Gray ldquoBut now wersquore [Gray Bee Honey Prod-ucts] at Hair Worksrdquo
Gray is working on getting a website for her products but is cur-rently encouraging customers to order through her business email gray870msncom Although business is growing it is not neces-sarily all about the money

Socialize Share information regard-ing the start up have a sampling party spread the word
The NEST is a free program to all Mills County families who are pregnant or with a child up to age three Families are able to earn points that can be used to purchase essential ldquobaby itemsrdquo at the NEST Store The NEST program is also a place families can access parental support and guidance for themselves Currently the Mills County NEST program serves over 75 families Funding for this program is provided through multiple grant sources including Mills County Child Abuse Prevention Council

ldquoAll children are born into this world totally dependent on the relationships they develop with their parents and their caregivers the people who are closest to themrdquo said Melody Ragland NEST Coordinator at Mills County Public Health ldquoThe NEST program pro-motes Mills County families having access to the support they need in order to resolve any barriers that affect their parentingrdquo The one common thread that binds all fam-ilies is our need for support as a parent It may deal directly with questions about rais-ing our child getting basic needs met or find-ing a way to balance the daily demands and stresses we are often faced with it (ie employ-ment relationships finances grief etc) The NEST is dedicated to promoting childrenrsquos social-emotional development through re-sponsive and nurturing caregiver-child rela-tionships There are many wonderful oppor-tunities to earn points at Mills County Public Health and throughout the community The NEST also offers the following
SHOP amp TALKS While shopping at the NEST you have the opportunity to individu-ally discuss any pregnancy parenting or daily life concerns you may have We will also provide you with a ldquotopic of the monthrdquo that is informative and supportive in developing a nurturing and responsive relationship with your baby
NEST PLAYGROUPS Monthly playgroups provide a wonderful opportunity to gather as parents with your children Parents are able to build their social network of friend-ships while providing an environment that promotes their childrsquos social and emotional growth
NEST CLASSES Monthly class is held to bring awareness and education on a variety of topics These classes are always fun and en-lightening Here you can create supportive friendships share your parenting expertise or brain-storm ideas for those tough par-enting hurdles Daycare child activities are provided for free while parents attend class

Governor Branstad signed a proclamation Thursday February 28 declaring March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Iowa According to the State Health Reg-istry of Iowa approximately 1640 Iowans are expected to be diagnosed with col-orectal cancer in 2013 ldquoToo many families are affected by this debilitating disease which is 90 percent treatable if detected earlyrdquo said Sheri Bowen Mills Co Public Health Director ldquoAs many as 60 percent of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided if everyone aged 50 or older were screened regularlyrdquoUnfortunately many Iowans still havenrsquot received that important message Accord-ing to the 2010 Iowa Behavioral Risk Fac-tor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey only about 64 percent of Iowans aged 50 or older report ever having been screened
for colorectal cancer Colorectal cancer is preventable treatable and beatable You can reduce your risk of ever getting colorectal cancer by bull Quitting tobacco bull Maintaining a healthy body weightbull Eating lots of fruits and vegetables bull Limiting alcohol intakebull Limiting the amount of red meat (beef pork and lamb) and processed meat that you eat bull Becoming or staying physically ac-tive

Now three years later Gray Bee Honey is a recognized small busi-ness run by both Gray and her mother

SHOP amp TALKS While shopping at the NEST you have the opportunity to individu-ally discuss any pregnancy parenting or daily life concerns you may have We will also provide you with a ldquotopic of the monthrdquo that is informative and supportive in developing a nurturing and responsive relationship with your baby

NEST PLAYGROUPS Monthly playgroups provide a wonderful opportunity to gather as parents with your children Parents are able to build their social network of friend-ships while providing an environment that promotes their childrsquos social and emotional growth
NEST CLASSES Monthly class is held to bring awareness and education on a variety of topics These classes are always fun and en-lightening Here you can create supportive friendships share your parenting expertise or brain-storm ideas for those tough par-enting hurdles Daycare child activities are provided for free while parents attend class
