Welcome back students Now that COVID restrictions are beginning to ease, particularly with the return to full face-to-face teaching, it has been extremely heartening to see how our students have re-embraced learning, in all its forms. Our students were so pleased to be back at school and our hard-working teachers were ready to welcome them all back. It was great to see their shiny and happy faces return and bring life back into the buildings and

the playground. It is important to mention and thank our teachers who, almost overnight, had to change the way they interact with our students and maintain continuity of learning during the COVID isolation period. Many teachers took part in vital professional learning in their own time, at weekends, upskilling themselves and preparing online resources for our students. We have all learned skills that will continue to grow and enhance the delivery of teaching and learning for many years to come. While we can’t forget the economic impact the COVID period has had on many of our families, it is encouraging to reflect some of the positive changes that have taken place and what we have learned in the process, particularly about each other.

Friday Funnies During the COVID isolation period, our Promotions Team worked tirelessly to bring you a range of ‘Friday Funnies’ in an attempt to keep our community connected to each other. We hope the Friday Funnies brought a smile to your faces during what was a very challenging time for so many of our community. Year HSC Trial Examinations Year 12 HSC Trial Exams will go ahead as planned in the first two weeks of Term 2, commencing on Monday 20 July. The exam timetable will be issued by Week 7 – it will also be available on our social media platforms. Please be aware that while Monday 20 July is a School Development Day for students from Years 7 to 11, Year 12 will still be expected to attend in order to start their exams. Students will be expected to stay for the entire examination – leaving early from a Trial HSC Exam is not permitted. 2020 HSC Additional Week The 2020 HSC written exam timetable was released on 15 May for the 75,000 students sitting the exams across NSW this year. To provide some certainty to students and parents and to provide more support for our students in the lead up to eth exams, NESA has decided to start the exams a week later than the traditional start date. This year, written exams will start with English on 20 October and oral language exams will start on 15 August. Students should receive their results on 18 December. All 2020 HSC students can access their personalised exam timetables via their Students Online account. If they have not already done so, please encourage them to. If they are having difficulty accessing it, please see Mr Fenech immediately. The Department of Education expects that the additional week provided prior to the written exams will be used as teaching and learning time to support students in their preparation for the HSC. It is expected that Year 12 students will continue to attend lessons on site up until Monday 19 October, 2020, the day before written exams commence.

Year 10 into 11 Subject Selection Due to the ongoing restrictions in place, we’ve had to re-think our Subject Selection Information Evening for parents and carers of students in Year 10 going into Year 11 in 2021. This year, the Information Evening will take the form of a range of virtual presentations that we will make available on our social media platforms. The pre-recorded videos will inform you of everything you need to know about the process of subject selection at Glenwood High School, from NESA Requirements for the HSC, to ATAR and university entry requirements, as well as advice on how to sensibly choose subjects for senior study. Our Year 12 students, too, have some sound advice to offer – advice that comes from experienced students who undertook the process 2 years ago.

Head Teachers from all Key Learning Areas will also speak to Year 10 students about subject offerings during Year Meetings. It is important that students maintain their attendance at school everyday so they don’t miss these important information sessions. We will also be seeking input from you through an evaluation that we will conduct to see if virtual presentations are your preferred method of seeking information, given how hectic your lives are. E-VET Classes, Work Placement and School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships for 2020 We are working together with externally delivered VET course providers toward resuming on-campus, face to face delivery for students to ensure that students are able to achieve outcomes of the courses in which they are enrolled. Maintaining the health and safety of students and teachers is of the highest priority and externally delivered VET course providers will be required to complete risk assessments and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies before students can return to face to face delivery.

Although dates for recommencement of this delivery are yet to be determined and may vary depending upon the provider and the student cohort, all parties are working to provide the opportunity for students to return to an appropriate learning environment and for this to occur as soon as possible.

Until face to face delivery resumes, externally delivered VET course providers will continue students’ learning through their various remote learning systems. Whilst the NSW Education Standards Authority has determined that for 2020 students who do not complete the mandatory work placement hours will still be eligible for Preliminary or HSC unit credit, undertaking work placement may still be of value to our students. It will allow them to continue to develop their work-related skills, explore potential employment opportunities and in some cases meet the assessment requirements of units of competency and/or their future qualifications. As of Monday 1 June 2020 (week 6 term 2), students who are completing a VET course may undertake associated work placement. Students who will be completing their course in 2021 will be able to undertake associated work placement from the commencement of Term 3 2020 where placements are available, understanding that where a student does not complete the mandatory work placement hours for a course they will still be eligible for Preliminary or HSC unit credit. All student’s work placements must ensure risk management processes and procedures are in place prior to their commencement. In addition, school-based apprentices and trainees may recommence work with the support of their employer immediately consistent with the advice provided above.

Dear Parents and Carers

NSW School Vaccination Program for Year 7 & 10 students in 2020 Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The following vaccination clinics will be conducted at Glenwood High School for all Year 7 & 10 students during the rest of 2020:

Friday, 12th June 2020 Year 7 (Catch-up) 1st dose HPV and single dose dTpa (who were absent for February)

(Term 2, Week 7) Year 8 (Catch-up) 2nd dose HPV and single dose of dTpa (who were absent in February)

Year 10 – Meningococcal ACWY Vaccine Friday, 11th September 2020 Year 7 - 2nd dose HPV (Term 3, Week 8) Year 7 (Catch-ups from June)

On the day of the school vaccination clinic please ensure that your child eats breakfast, and brings plenty of food and water for throughout the day.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phone the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. You should ensure that this record is kept for future reference. Please do not assume that your child has been vaccinated if you do not receive this Record of Vaccination. Vaccination records will be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to provide a complete immunisation history for your child.
