approaching the HSC for success and NESA policy. A special thank you to Ms Donna Healy, Deputy Principal in charge of Year 11, for detailing how the HSC works and gave options on how to apply for University and TAFE.

2018 Student Leaders Announced Every year many students nominate for a leadership role across the school and this year was no exception in fact it grows each year. This is a testament of the wonderful leadership opportunities offered at Glenwood High School and the outstanding calibre of our students. The school community is very proud of our student commitment to making the world a better place. Even students who were unsuccessful in selection are true leaders and will continue to do so in their everyday workings around the school and in the community. The following students undertook a rigorous selection process through written application, student vote and proposals, presented to a panel for the leadership role of Prefect Body the ultimate pillar of student leadership. They should be proud of their success when the calibre of all students who nominated is so impressive. I would like to thank Ms Rebecca Powell for her organisation of this very rigorous process. Congratulations to our school leaders for 2018:

Captains: Patrick Gleeson and Becky Wan Vice Captains: Nipun Wellappuli and Alana Head Prefects: Nicholas Balcombe, Aaron Blakemore, Maddy Bockenham, Jackson Bunting, Charlotte Dawson, Jayden Hall, Blake Illitch, Calvin Kok, Wade Misford, Zoe Pearson , Tanya Topham, Aalapi Sreekumar.

We also had the pleasure to induct our House Captain Body for 2018 who have been passed the batten and will commence their tenure in Term 4, 2017. This team are responsible for instilling Glenwood High School PBL values across all aspects of the school with an enthuses on our three R’s; Respect, Responsibility, Readiness and also building school spirit. A big thank you needs to go to Mr Moore who continues to guide this team. Congratulation to our house captains for 2018: NSW Government Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship The NSW Government Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship will fund 20 students across NSW to travel to the western front, in France and Belgium during June and July in 2018. Glenwood High School is one of the 20 schools out of the 3136 high schools across NSW (Government, Private and Independent) selected to send a student on this amazing experience. A testament of Glenwood High School’s reputation. A very intense process took place to select the student for nomination to represent Glenwood High School for this once in a life time opportunity. Students from 2017, Years 9 and 10 were offered the opportunity to submit an application. They were required to submit a piece of work on a theme that relates to the Centenary of Anzac with strict guidelines, however, the submitted work could take any format. We at Glenwood High School were presented with works that ranged from a composed and performed song, short story, PowerPoint, painting, poem and video to name a few of the range of presentations. This demonstrates the diverse talents of our students which further made the selection panel’s job very difficult. The panel shortlisted all student submission and a final group of seven students moved to the next stage where they had to face the panel comprising of school, RSL and community representatives. An interview setting was arranged and the finalists presented their submission and answered questions from the panel. A very gruelling process for a young person. I would like to announce the student who has earned, through this process and be bestowed upon this honour and experience, however it is still in the process of being verified by the NSW Premier’s Department. I do want to acknowledge our Glenwood High School seven finalists Ryan Blacker, Laura Bunting, Nathaniel Henderson, Emily Joel, Harshveer Purewal, Alex Tsitsios and Ebony Turton, congratulations you have done yourselves, your family, Glenwood High school and the broader community very proud. A huge congratulations must go to our seven finalists and if Glenwood High School could, we would nominate all seven finalists.

School Opal Card—Tap on and Tap Off An important requirement of School Opal card is the need for students to Tap On and Tap Off when they travel to and from school. Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students don’t tap

on and tap off, services may be cancelled due to the lack of recorded patronage. With this in mind, TRANSPORT NSW would like to remind all students that tapping on and off at the beginning and end of each trip is one of the conditions of using a School Opal card. This in turn helps us ensure we are able to provide the appropriate level of service to your students. To further promote the use of School Opal, Busways will also be conducting checks on School Opal cards over the coming months. All students travelling on buses to and from school will be required to show their card and ensure they Tap On and Tap Off every time they catch the bus. Students without an Opal Card will be provided with a brochure to take home identifying how they can get an Opal Card. Please support Busways staff with afternoon boarding and checks to ensure minimal delays to bus departure times and demonstrate a united front to students on bus travel and Opal Card use.

FROM THE DESKS OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

“Change your thoughts and you change your world .” Norman Vincent Peale

It is a very busy time at Glenwood High School at the moment. Our teachers are to be commended for the additional assistance they provide to our students through enrichment opportunities and individualised guidance each and every day.

In recent weeks, Year 12 have commenced their HSC examinations and Years 7, 8 and 9 have undertaken formal examinations, with Year 10 having their final examinations this week. Year 11 students have now commenced HSC study and the work they are completing in class will be examined in the HSC examinations in 2018. This is an important time for all grades.

Term 4 has been a successful term at Glenwood High School so far. The school has an excellent reputation due to the dedication that students demonstrate to their own education, the school and its community. Glenwood High School uses the Positive Behaviour for Learning program, which focuses on the following core values and expectations:

respect for others respect for self respect for property responsibility for actions ready for learning

Our students readily exhibit these values in their everyday lives and are a credit to their families, the school and the wider community.

Year Group News: Year 12 Our wonderful Year 12 students graduated at the end of Term 3. As always, our graduation ceremony

was positively received by parents, students and staff. Our HSC students have worked diligently on

their HSC examinations throughout the past 3 weeks and the external examination supervisors have

commended them on their organisation, behaviour and application. Here they have had the opportunity

to put into practice all of the skills, experiences and qualities that that they have honed over the past

six years here at Glenwood High School. We look forward to seeing their results. HSC results will be

released by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) on Thursday, 14th December 2017.

Year 11 Year 11 commenced their HSC studies at the beginning of the term. In the first week of Term 4, students and parents attended an HSC information session. All students were given a copy of the Assessment Policy. Individual subject assessment schedules need to be down loaded from the school website or intranet http://www.ghsintranet.com/.

In the HSC year, students at Glenwood High School are expected to undertake 12 units of study at school. This allows room for errors as the ATAR is calculated on the results of the best 10 units, including English. In exceptional circumstances, am extension course may be submitted for the one 2 unit course. This policy is supported by academic research conducted by NESA which indicates that students who complete 12 units of study achieve better overall results. Please ensure your child has returned all relevant documents to the relieving Deputy Principal, Ms Harris.

The Redgum Issue 7 - 1 November 2017

Glenwood High School discourages students from driving to and from school, as this can create issues relating to traffic, parking, security of vehicles, accidents and truancy. However, there may be some circumstances where it may be necessary for a senior student to drive themselves to school. Any student who is given approval to drive to school must have a current driver’s licence, comprehensive insurance and return the permission note. The permission note must be signed by the parent/carer of the driver, as well as any passenger that will be in the car. Copies of the relevant documents must be provided to the school.

Year 11 students are reminded that all documents must be submitted to the school for approval

BEFORE they assume the privilege of driving to school. Applications are available from Mrs

Healy.

Year 10

Year 10 students have a number of important activities in the second half of Term 4. Students will

undertake their final examinations from Monday, 6th November 2017. Year 10 will also participate

in Australian Business Week (ABW) from Monday, 27th November 2017 to Friday, 1st December

2017. This initiative provides students with a wonderfully engaging opportunity to simulate running

a business through the use of creativity, marketing and design skills. Students always enjoy

participating in ABW and we look forward to viewing student presentations at the end of the

program.

Year 9

Year 9 are fast approaching the midpoint of their Stage 5 studies and need to ensure that all of

their assessment tasks are completed before the end of the year. Students in this cohort are

studying under the Record of School Achievement (RoSA), which requires students to

successfully complete their Stage 5 (both Years 9 and 10) studies before they qualify for this

credential from NESA. This is the time for Year 9 students to practise good habits by studying

hard for their examinations and ensuring they start next year with all assessment tasks from this

year completed.

Year 8

Year 8 will receive their subject confirmation sheets soon, specifying the electives they have been enrolled in for 2018. Students had the opportunity to nominate subjects that suited their interest areas to study as elective courses. Earlier in the year, students were given advice in relation to choosing electives and have already selected their options of study. Students are reminded that, with a few exceptions that we are trialling this year, these are two year courses; therefore, they may be studying the same electives in both Years 9 and 10. Students will be given the opportunity to explore changing electives for the first 3 weeks of Term 1, 2018, before they become locked in for the year. Students should take advantage of that time to consider their elective courses and see Mrs Healy ASAP in that 3 week window to investigate the option of changing.

Year 7

Year 7 are coming to the end of their first successful year of high school. They are to be congratulated for settling into the routines of high school and are working well as a group.

This cohort will have an important role in modelling behaviour and expectations for those students currently in Year 6 who will be joining our school in 2018. Many have eagerly taken up the opportunity to be role models, buddies and mentors for our Year 6 students, demonstrating true leadership qualities.

Wishing all a productive and enjoyable end to the year!

Until next time, Karen O’Connor (Relieving Deputy Principal – Year 7 and Year 10) Donna Healy (Deputy Principal – Year 8 and Year 11) Tina Hosen (Acting Deputy Principal – Year 9 and Year 12)

If any students are interested in IT and would like to pursue a career in Information Technology, consider becoming a Tech Ninja and gain some experience before you leave school. Please see Mrs Callaghan for details
