Swimming Age Champions for 2017
Every Day Counts- Please make sure your child is at school every day!
Let’s get behind our 100% attendance target for the rest of the year. We want all students to be 100% attendees for the next 6 weeks.
Independent Public School happenings:
Thank you to all who have completed or are in the process of completing our School Council Survey. The outcomes will be communicated to all in the near future.
Understanding the purposes of assessment in Primary schooling:
There is an ongoing debate over ‘standards’ and the relative performance of students from different countries in the media. Much of it is opinion rather than research and evidence based, unfortunately, and the debate can actually serve to detract from what is a complex reality related to the aims of education in differing societies and countries around the world. Here in Australia, education has formed the basis of our social and human capital building, the view that education has a social role to improve our society and a human role to improve each individual. It is aspirational for all to achieve but somewhat balanced with the freedoms and rights to choose our individual pathways. In essence it the role of education is a democratic one. This differs markedly from many other countries in the world but aligns with many with whom we have historical connections as would be expected.
However, that does not imply that standards and excellence do not matter, or that as a school we accept that a ‘laissez-faire’ (let people do as they choose) will produce good or best outcomes. There is a fine balance between encouragement, expectations, instilling aspiration, rewarding success and effort and some direction and pressure that is at the heart of what we do as a school and you do also as parents.
This extract is from the P-12 Curriculum Guide for Queensland and it outlines the purposes of assessment in schools.
Assessment is an integral component of systematic curriculum delivery. Teachers forefront (consider and devise) assessment in planning their teaching and learning programs. The main purposes of assessment are to gather information and monitor student progress, inform teaching and learning, and to report on student’s achievement.
Summative assessment tasks assist teachers to use evidence of student learning to assess and report student achievement against the relevant achievement standards for each learning area and/or subject at the end of each reporting period.
Formative assessment includes monitoring tasks, diagnostic tools and standardised assessments. Monitoring tasks are designed to track student progress against the relevant achievement standards and to provide the curriculum in a way that meets the needs of learners. Teachers plan a range of formal and informal monitoring tasks in each unit plan as part of whole school curriculum, assessment and reporting planning.
Diagnostic tools are used to gather more detailed information about discrete skills that relate to learning, for example literacy and numeracy capability. Standardized assessments, such as PAT R and M, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) , are used to measure understandings and skills developed over time by teaching the curriculum. Student data related to diagnostic tools and standardized assessment is recorded and used as part of a whole school assessment process...
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Student Survey
Shortly we will be asking you to give your permission for our students in yrs 4-6 to undertake a survey around health, well-being and resilience. This will enable us to have a benchmark figure for each child and to tailor programs and strategies to meet the needs of our children. More information soon but you might like to have a look at http://www.resilientyouth.org.au/ for information. Resilient Youth Australia is used by a number of Queensland Education Regions and has been found in schools in those regions to be immensely helpful is assisting students to develop those essential resiliency skills.
Diagnostic and Standardised testing in Literacy and Numeracy:
In the next few weeks students will participate in a range of PAT R and M testing. PAT (Progressive Achievement Testing) in spelling, vocabulary, comprehension and maths is annually done is most QLD schools. This testing provides a rich source of credible, verifiable data about student achievement which we use extensively in formulating programs and addressing student need. It is quite stress free and non-threatening for students. We have been undertaking this testing at Glenview for 5 years and have an extensive set of confidential data for each child. Our Prep and Year 1 students will also be undertaking the Early Start Assessment – a one on one conversation with their teachers as another statewide data set. More information will be communicated to parents about these processes.
Car Parking:
Car parking is always a challenge at peak times. Please use only the designated carparks in the designated areas. Local footpaths and neighbouring properties are unsuitable as car parks. Help keep our children safe!
Please do not leave your vehicle parked in the 2 min bays. It will assist everyone if these are used as a drop off or pickup only area.
School Hours: School begins at 8:40 a.m. and finishes at 3:00 p.m.
Allergies and Anaphylaxis:
Would you kindly ensure that all food brought into the school for lunches, snacks etc. is entirely free of any nut or nut related products. Your cooperation here is vitally important to ensure that student’s lives are not put at risk.
Wisdom for the week: How many nursery rhymes did you/do you use with your pre-school aged child/children? There is lots of research on the importance of rhyme and rhythm to young children’s development. And it’s fun! Lex Heilbronn—Principal

PREP ORIENTATION SESSIONS
Bonjour! We have the possibility of offering a French Club at here at Glenview, and would like to an idea of how much interest there is. The club would run on Thursday, at first break, and is open to all Glenview students. It would be a mix of learning activities and games, all done in French. As learning a new language requires a consistent effort, this would not be a “drop in club”. Attendance would be limited to 10 students, so we can progress with our learning each week as a group. Commitment to coming every week is a requirement. If you are interested in your child participating, and your child is happy to commit to coming every week, please email me their name and class. ( [email protected] ) We will begin with a “trial” period, starting Nov. 2 and running through to the end of the year. Should it be a success, we will continue in 2018. Looking forward to hearing from you. Have a lovely weekend!
Merci! Louise Harrison

V8’S
Wow, what a day! The year 5s and 6s had fun at the V8 Supercars last Friday, with plenty of noise to go around. Be-ing the first dry day we'd had in over a week, we had the perfect conditions to be entertained with live racing trials, a classic auto show, jet flying practise, photo opportunities and fun activities with prizes to be won.
All in all, the trip was a great experience! Thank you to Mr Heilbronn for a superb day.!
