LEADER IN PROVIDING SPECIALIZED REHABILITATION

Specialized Rehabilitation Outpatient Program (SROP) Update – The SROP program has assisted with patient flow from our inpatient programs as well as in the community.

o In the month of July, 2014, SROP clinical staff saw 603 patients, with 2119 patient appointments, totaling 5100 hours of patient care.

o In Q1, 2014 we saw 220 patients from GRH inpatient units and clinics. This has decreased our length of stay on IP units and increased our IP capacity. We are able to follow our patients as they continue to work on their rehabilitation goals while not occupying a bed.

o Our referrals from external sources continue to grow. In Q1, 2014 we received 234 referrals from external sources. This helps patients to build function and avoid functional decline that may lead to hospitalization. SROP patient data collected by the Destination Home team suggests a 42% decrease in ED visits and 62% fewer inpatient admissions six months post referral.

o The Interprofessional Student Services program assists with building our capacity to treat patients, as well, it has become a recruiting tool for Glenrose staff. Since January, 2012 the program has worked with 126 students who saw 1932 patients with 6278 appointments for a total of 8651 patient care hours.

o 83% of patients reported a clinically significant improvement for the last quarter (Q2, 2014-15).

Stroke Early Supported Discharge Program – The

Stroke Early Supported Discharge Program (SESD) will be moving to the Glenrose this fall. Survivors of mild to moderate strokes can leave hospital sooner and return to the comforts of home knowing a comprehensive Alberta Health Services (AHS) team will come to them with all the tools needed to work towards restoring their abilities, confidence and

independence. A multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and social workers help patients head home, on average, after two weeks in hospital, compared to a typical stay of four weeks or more. Referrals to the SESD Program come from four Edmonton hospitals that have a stroke program: Royal Alexandra, University of Alberta, Grey Nuns and the Glenrose. We look forward to welcoming the SESD Program to our site as part of the Specialized Rehabilitation Outpatient Program.

Telehealth Pilot – GRH Developmental Pediatricians Partner with the Camrose Pediatric

Specialty Service – The provision of comprehensive, specialized, developmental pediatric services to clients and families in the communities in which they live can often be challenging, particularly in rural communities. The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and the Camrose Pediatrics Specialty Clinic are now piloting the use of telehealth as a means of overcoming many of these challenges. Camrose possesses a terrific multidisciplinary rehabilitation team consisting of occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech language pathologists, psychologists, and social workers who provide services to complex pediatric patients and their families. Often however, these patients require the specialization of a Developmental Pediatrician, a resource not currently available in Camrose, thus limiting the full capacity of this team. As a result, patients and families are forced to travel long distances to be seen in larger centres and / or wait for lengthy periods to receive this service. This pilot project enables Glenrose Developmental Pediatricians and Fellows to join monthly Camrose multidisciplinary team meetings to review patient referrals and triage for appropriate services. Children identified as needing the services of a Developmental Pediatrician are scheduled for a multidisciplinary clinic visit in Camrose, which includes an assessment done by the Glenrose physician via telehealth. Following this assessment, the Glenrose physician then joins the team conference via telehealth for a comprehensive review of the results followed by a family conference with the patient / family, full multidisciplinary team, and local stakeholders for discussion and collaboration on next steps. Through the utilization of telehealth, the Camrose Pediatric Specialty Service is able to function at full capacity to deliver comprehensive, specialized, pediatric services to patients and families effectively and efficiently in their local community. This collaborative, team-based model of telehealth service delivery supports safe, comprehensive, patient-centred care. It may be used as a template for a variety of health care programs that can benefit from collaboration of local resources with urban specialists to improve health outcomes.

Glenrose Hospital Electromyograpy (EMG) Clinic – Electromyography or 'EMG' for short is a diagnostic test used to investigate any disease or injury to the peripheral nervous system. Patients at

the Glenrose are heavy users of the EMG clinic because the GRH admits and cares for many patients with neuromuscular disease. EMG testing is considered essential in many conditions ranging from motor neuron disease e.g. (ALS), Guillain Barre Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophies, Poliomyelitis (e.g. West Nile disease) etc. and many nerve injuries from major trauma through to carpal tunnel syndrome. Any patients with weakness, numbness, pain or balance and coordination issues are referred for EMG studies. We operate the

only province-wide clinic for brachial plexus injuries in conjunction with the peripheral nerve surgeons, as well as a variety of sub-specialized clinics such as the post-polio clinic.

Edmonton has two EMG labs (the other located at the UAH) hence the GRH lab has direct responsibility for all Edmonton Zone hospitals except the UAH, including the intensive care units at the RAH, Misericordia, Grey Nuns and Sturgeon hospitals. About 15% of our patients are inpatients and the 85% are referred from the northern half of the province, parts of British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The age range of patients is from newborn infants through to the eldest seniors. We see about 2300 new patients a year making the EMG Clinic one the busiest clinics at the GRH.

GRH Seating Services – More advanced custom seats are manufactured at the Glenrose using digital methods that save time and shorten waitlists.

PROVIDER OF NEW KNOWLEDGE

GRH Autism Research – The Autism Research Centre (ARC) at the Glenrose is co-directed by Dr. Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, Stollery Children‟s Hospital Chair in Autism Research, Department of Pediatrics, University of Alberta and Dr. Joanne Volden, Professor, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta. The ARC team is investigating topics including earliest signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), factors that relate to more positive outcomes, genetic influences on ASD, and the medical issues faced by some children with ASD. Infant Sibling Research Parents often report that they were concerned about their child by their first birthday. Our Infant Sibling research group followed the younger siblings of children diagnosed with ASD (Sibs) and infants without a family history of ASD (non-Sibs) to understand the development of ASD. By 12 months of age, the children who will be diagnosed with ASD (1) have trouble looking away from one object to look at another, (2) are less active (running around), (3) are more irritable, (4) first words occur later, and (5) they use fewer gestures (pointing). Understanding the early signs in children who will later be diagnosed with ASD is important for identifying ASD. Zwaigenbaum et al., International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience. 2005; 23:143-152

Early detection can help to ensure that proper supports and services are in place for children and their families

Autism Speaks-Autism Treatment Network Edmonton is proud to have been renewed for another 3 years as one of two Canadian sites to take part in Autism Speaks-Autism Treatment Network (AS-ATN), a North American initiative aimed at improving

the quality of medical care for children and adolescents with ASD. The ultimate goal is to provide comprehensive, collaborative care to children and adolescents with ASD by identifying and addressing physical health issues. The AS-ATN collaborates with the child‟s parents and Glenrose physicians to track health and well-being for 3 consecutive years. A recent AS-ATN study looked at the relationships between difficulties with sleeping and the daytime behaviours of children with ASD. Families and their children represented 14

major cities in the United States, totaling 1193 children with ASD. In general, results suggested that children with parent identified sleep problems (i.e. getting to sleep, staying asleep) had greater behavioural difficulties (i.e. anxiety, aggression). By demonstrating this relationship, the need for families and health professionals to address sleep issues in a timely manner is especially important. Sikora et al., Pediatrics. 2012; 130:583-590

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Pathways to Better Outcomes Edmonton is one of five sites across Canada dedicated to the „Autism Spectrum Disorder: Pathways to Better Outcomes‟ study. The study began eight years ago and the goal of the study is to describe the developmental paths of children with ASD and to identify factors associated with optimal social, communication, adaptive, and

behavioural outcomes. A recent finding comparing early language development in monolingual and bilingual exposed young children with ASD found no significant differences between the two groups regarding age of first words or phrases, severity of autism-related communication impairments, receptive or expressive language skills, and functional communication abilities. Results of this study indicate that a bilingual language environment does not interfere with the developing language system of young children with ASD. This is positive news for the growing number of bilingual families. Ohashi et al., Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders. 2012; 6:890-897

PARTNERING WITH PATIENTS & COMMUNITY

GRH Driver Evaluation and Training Service (DETS) – The GRH Driver Evaluation and Training Service (DETS) provides comprehensive driving evaluation and training for new and experienced drivers with a wide variety of disabilities and/or health conditions that may affect their ability to drive safely. Services are delivered by an Occupational Therapist and a Certified Driver Instructor.

The DETS program has made significant improvements over the past year. The program‟s waitlist has been reduced significantly as a result of the team‟s process improvement work and participation in the AIM 20 Collaborative. The current waitlist is 1.5 months down from the previous 6-8 month wait times. The DETS program has clarified its target population and created additional capacity in the GRH Specialized Rehabilitation Outpatient Program (SROP). SROP now

provides the first part of the driving assessment for some patients. This has ensured that patients receive access to services in a timely way. The DETS program also received a new Honda Odyssey Van in 2013. The van enables staff to provide services to a wider variety of patients across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

GRH MoveEZ Program – The MoveEZ program has

been engaging Glenrose Hospital volunteers to help motivate patients to be more active since January 2013. MoveEZ has now expanded to include inpatient Unit 3D. Volunteers have started taking 3D patients on walks and helping patients with light exercises. The program has also been implemented at the Cross Cancer Institute and Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Glenrose Arts in Rehab Council Update – The Glenrose has three art galleries: Art on the Inside, Mezzanine and Blue Curve. The art work on display is for sale through the Corner Store, with a portion of each sale going towards the Art in Residence Program. Mezzanine Gallery Now showing “MODERN Splash” Batik Painting – A celebration of creativity through color. This exhibit runs until October 14th and features several artists from the In-Definite Arts Society (IDAS), a non-profit community organization that supports adults with developmental disabilities to express themselves through art.

Best Abstract Award Recipient Honoured – Dr. Ming Chan, GRH Research Affiliate, received The Best Abstract Award at the American Association Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) meeting in Savannah, Georgia for his work entitled, “Post-Surgical Electrical Simulation Enhances Sensory Function Following Digital Nerve Transection: A Double Blind, Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.” The AANEM has made a strong effort to provide a nurturing environment which allows clinicians with an interest in neuromuscular disease to develop and grow.

EVENTS

Glenrose Celebrates with Great Fashion – When Judith Krupp came to the GRH 50th. Anniversary planning meetings earlier this year she said; “How can The Friends of Glenrose help”?” The membership‟s challenge was to bring back some of the fashions from 50 years ago while entertaining trends of today. Well they did that with class on Sunday, September 7, 2014. The GRH Bistro Dining room was turned into a fashion show runway to a sold-out crowd. They were enlightened with Bianca Nygard fashions by 13 models. Arlene Gort led the parade of fashion wearing her 50 year old nurses‟ uniform as the crowd cheered and clapped. Louise Miller captured everyone‟s attention with her outfit and with her modeling skills and twirls. We are very grateful to all the models who volunteered for this event. Hats off to Gina, Mario and Jac who provided free hair care and style to our models; to Becky from Arbonne who donated cosmetic supplies and skilled associate‟s time and to our very own members that donated their time for this event. Proceeds from this event are put back into patient comfort needs for the Glenrose Hospital clients such as equipment and incidental expenses that aid in a patient‟s rehabilitation journey. If you are interested in becoming a member of The Friends of Glenrose, please call Judith Krupp, President, at 780-735-7986.
