News from Glenreagh Public School - August 2016 Here we are mid term in Term 3 and our school days have been ever so busy again. It seems that we just get one activity over and another is upon us. Who ever said that at school we only did “readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmatic.” We do all that and more, just ask the children.

Athletics Carnival

A great day was had by all. Thank you to all of the families who came along to support their children on the day. The highlight was definitely the sub-junior high jump event. We saw some really unique styles, unlike anything we have ever seen at an athletics event before! The children had smiles on their faces all day and enjoyed cheering each other on. Ms Fowler, with the support of the staff, did a fantastic job of organising the day for us all to enjoy. Thank you to the parents who assisted on the day, both in the canteen and on the field. Due to time and staffing constraints the discus and shot put were completed later in the week. Our champions were Sub-Junior boy - Dominic Cohen, Sub-Junior girl - Maddi-Jo Bultitude, Junior boy - Rowdy Porter, Junior girl- Molly Cohen, 11 yrs boy - Eli Mayled, 11 yrs girl - Georgia Ranney. Senior boy - Jayden Mifsud, Senior girl - Ryli Powick and the winning house was Lawson.

The winners from our carnival progressed to the Orara Valley

Athletics Carnival and then onto the Coffs Harbour District

Carnival. These students were Isabelle Gilmartin, Ebony Hill, Aiden

Hill, Navrin Hooklyn and Rowdy Porter.

Buddy Benches

The school has recently been the recipient of two buddy benches. Two representatives from Bunnings presented the first Buddy Bench and Noel Backman and his colleague from the Orara Valley Lions Club presented our second Buddy Bench. The purpose of the Buddy Bench is to provide a place where children can go to find a friend. They are highly prized in our school.

Naidoc Week. When our school returned this term we celebrated Naidoc Week with a full on day of activities. We were priviledged to have several elders share the day with us, along with parents and friends. The day commenced with a special assembly where Uncle Roger Duroux delivered the Welcome to Country, after which the senior choir performed for us. This was followed by an fantastic performance by Tjupurru playing on the Didjeribone. Aunty Daphne Flanders planted a silky oak in our grounds and the elders assisted with painting our worm farm tubes while the children assisted or were kept busy in their classroom with Naidoc activities. You can find more pictures and Tjupurru’s performanc-es on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/glenreaghpublicschool/

Education Week Activities The theme for this year’s celebrations is ‘Shared stories, better learning, stronger communities’. The Stage 2/3 children enjoyed their excursion to the Glenreagh Museum and learnt more about the history of Glenreagh and the families that lived here. Thank you to Wilma Towells, Honnie Reifler and Bessie Webb who took time out to show all of our children our past history. The Kindergarten and Stage 1 visit was postponed until last Thursday but they were equally impressed with what they saw and learnt.

Education Week Concert

The school chil-dren travelled to Coffs Central to

participate in the Orara Valley Combined School choir in a performance at Coffs Central for Education Week. The K-2 choir and the 3-6 choir sounded beautiful as they sang a collection of songs for the audience. After the performance they walked to Brelsford Park for their picnic lunch and a play on the equipment before boarding the bus for the return to school.

We finished Education Week with a community dance at the Glenreagh School of Arts. Those who attended thoroughly enjoyed dancing to the music of Tallowood Bush Band. If you missed it keep a spot on your calendar for a n o t h e r communi ty dance next year.

NED show - As part of our school social development program we hosted a performance called the NED show. “ Never

give up, Encourage Others, Do your Best.” The children were enthralled by the antics of the NED performer and her skills with the yo-yo as they listened to her story telling. There was a focus on anti-bullying and getting along and it has inspired the children to

become champions at school and at life. The show was free as we were the beneficiaries of yo-yo sales from another school and we have also passed on the privilege through the children purchasing yo-yos in the week f o l l ow i n g t h e show.

Election Day Fete

The school was the site for the Federal Elections this year. The P&C organised a fete for the visitors to the school and to keep the little ones amused while the seri-ous business was being conducted indoors. Thanks to those who came to volunteer their time at the RFS display, vintage cars, and other stalls.

Book Week Activities

This week our school will be holding its annual BOOK Fair and Book Parade. The children have preiviewed the books and done their wish list for the fair and excite-ment is mounting. The children are coming to school dressed in theme ’Australia! Story Country’ and after lunch at our assembly they will have their Book Parade. The Book Fair is open to the public so if you would like to come along, the doors will open for sales between 8.30am - 2.00pm. We hope to see you there.

Our Veggie Garden

Under the guidance of Mrs Trainer the children are doing a fantastic job looking after our veggie gardens. Recently Stage 3 were extremely busy solving a problem we have in our veggie patch. How are we going to provide our plants with the room they need to grow?? They were busy stripping leaves off the bamboo, designing and constructing their projects. What a team!!

SCOPE ICT lessons

Our school has been participating in SCOPE ICT lessons each Tuesday. The children are learning, with great enthusiasm, about Coding. The lessons have been well received by all and they are always disappointed with their learning time is up.

Future Basketballers

This term as part of the Sporting Schools program the children have been receiving coaching from qualified basketball coaches in the skills of basketball. All the children are coming along nicely under their direction.

“Jump Start” Kinder Transition and Kindergarten 2017

Our kinder transition for students entering Kindergarten in 2017 has commenced on a Friday from 9.20am to 11am. The children have settled in nicely and are leaving our rooms with happy faces. So glad to see them enjoying themselves. This will continue for the remainder of the term and into next term.

We are now accepting enrolments for 2017 Kindergarten. If you have a child you are planning to enrol, please see Mrs Beard for an enrolment form and let other friends in the community know about our transition program.

After School Care

We have had a number of families enquire about the availability of After School Care. The principal is currently in consultation with Country Cubs at Coramba to determine the feasibility of them providing a pick-up at Glenreagh PS in the afternoons. Please contact the office if this is something you might be interested in, either now or in the future.
