Glen Murcutt was born on the 25 July 1936 in London. He grew up in the highlands of New Guinea on the Upper Watut River, With five siblings his Australian Mum and Dad.
In 1922 his family had to escape from New Guinea because of the Pacific War, the invasion of the Japanese. His family then moved to Sydney.
Glenn didn’t know how to
speak English only pidgin
English which he learnt in
New Guinea. At the age
of 8 his family decided to
send him to school. At the
age of 15 he then
decided he wanted to
become an architect.
He got married to his wife
Helen .Glenn want to
experience Europe's
architecture so Helen and
Glenn went to Europe.
They had a son Nicholas
and his wife sister was
also brutally murder so
they decide to move back
to Australia.
In 1969 he designed a
house for his brother . That
house was followed
immediately by a house for
Laurie Short (his mum).
Both these buildings
received recognition. He
has won the Oscar, the big
Nobel Prize for
architecture,and also the
Pritzker Prize.
His houses often featured corrugated iron with the ribs laid horizontally, creating a feeling to the landscape instead of competing with it. Few of his designs called for air-conditioning. The flow of air was controlled through the implementation of slatted roofs, screens, and blinds; wide eaves provided shelter from the sun.
Glen Murcutt is an
amazing architect. His
designs very
environmentally friendly
and his buildings made of
low-impact materials.
