29th Sunday in Ordinary Time—Year B
18th October 2015
Experiencing our Church in the World of Family:
Reading “THE SIGNS OF OUR TIMES”
Anthony Kain. PP
Pope Francis, when talking with the people at the Synod for boldness in
speech and humility in ears that listen.
He asked them to see the larger context of the method the Synod
was using. This larger context links with that used by the Second Vatican
Council which produced 16 documents. Groups of theologians prepared a
draft of each of them and then these were reflected upon by interventions
of the Bishops towards the final text which was then voted upon. And
within this process the then Pope, Paul V1, said there was a need to read
“the sign of the times.”
Such a process is really asking the Synod to name those experiences
that engage us. Our faith is constant and the unchanging Gospel is at the
heart of the process. Yet how the Gospel is lived out in different cultures
and contexts can vary. Hence we need to listen to others seeking to live
out the message of the Gospel in their context and culture in answer to the
question: Where is God leading us today in family life?
The Synod seeks to hold up the beauty of God’s plan for marriage
and family, the essential grace that comes through Jesus Christ for the life of
each family member. It explores what ongoing accompaniment of families
by the Church is needed. There are issues that the media will emphasize,
and I suggest we need to be slow in accepting media stories that only want
to highlight controversy and their own view of “progressive” versus
“conservative.”
The mandate of the family to be the building block of society has a
supernatural meaning as well. Pope Francis is calling all Catholic families to
be signs, in the sense that a sign points beyond itself. It signifies something
else, something greater than itself. Marriage is an effective and lasting sign.
Our spirituality says that the unity of the spouses is as enduring as God’s
communion with the Church. It is brought about not merely by their
human wills but by an act of God, to which they give their full and free
consent. Every married couple is called to be a living sermon and so,
therefore, is every Catholic family.
So we join in praying for the work of the Synod that together we can
strengthen the vocation and mission of marriage and families. May Catholic
family life will be a sermon to the world of God’s faithful and fruitful love.
Please remember in your prayers ...
