Dear parents,

Welcome to Term 4. The term has started in a very ‘busy’ way.

The Staff Room is currently undergoing some renovations and hopefully will be looking new and refreshed by the end of next week.

Here is a special message from one of students about tomorrow’s mufti day

Road Safety – I think the great majority of parents are aware of how hard we work at GPS to ensure all students are safety when on or around roads. Last term, the traffic problems became increasingly worse. As it was the drivers who were breaking the road rules that were causing the problems I contacted both the office of the Minister responsible for roads and the Mayor of Blacktown City Council. I have included the responses from the people concerned for the information of community members. Any parents with any concerns may like to direct their complaints to the people who authored the letters below as despite sending approximately 100 photos showing illegal driving practices, the area is officially considered safe.

Doug Meaney

Principal

Dear Doug, Thank you for your enquiry to Roads and Maritime Services about Road Crossing Safety at Glendenning Public School. Please note that Armitage Drive is a local road and comes under the care and control of Blacktown City Council. Its for the council to investigate into parking concerns, signage and line marking enhancement issues on the local roads and address them through the local traffic committee. Roads and Maritime Services is committed to providing a safe road environment for students adjacent to school premises. As part of our Safety around Schools Program, 40 km/h school zones have been provided on roads with an active direct access point from the school, and on roads where a Roads and Maritime School Crossing Supervisor is employed. The school zone signage and associated pavement marking on Armitage Drive Street has been installed in accordance with the RMS’s School Zone Guidelines. We commend your concerns for road safety. However, appropriate measures have been taken, in accordance with the School Zoning Guidelines, to ensure the school zone speed limit is clearly display to all motorists on Armitage Drive. I hope this has been of assistance. If you have any further questions Mohammed Irfan, Network and Safety Officer, at Roads and Maritime on (02) 88492505 would be pleased to take your call. Regards Roads and Maritime Services www.rms.nsw.gov.au Every journey matters

This week we were lucky enough to have Senior Constable Sneesby attend Glendenning PS and present to our Stage Three students about Cyber Safety. Senior Constable Sneesby has been a Youth Liaison Officer for Mt Druitt Police Station for over 12 years and has lots of experience working with children between the ages of 10-18.

Constable Sneesby addressed many areas of cyber safety that were relevant and important for our students to learn about. Some topics he covered included:

Social Media – many students have their own accounts with social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and TikToc. The minimum age required to have an account on these websites is 13. Therefore, no student at Glendenning PS should have access to these sites.

Harassment and Bullying – Constable Sneesby noted that there has been an increase of online bullying and harassment between young people using social media sites. He explained to the students that any threat made online was illegal and that by sending comments and messages to others online makes it easy to track, as the message itself is the evidence.

Online safety – Constable Sneesby made it clear to the students that if they do happen to have the above accounts, they should NEVER add or talk to people they do not know. He explained to the students that there are people in the community who will pretend to be someone other than who they are. He noted that if children talk to these people and give them personal information they could be putting themselves at risk of harm.

Privacy – the discussion also covered different elements of privacy. The first point was for students to consider what name they chose to use online and to be very careful about the information they were sharing on social media sites. Students were told that it was unsafe to share their full name, address, phone numbers or school online. Constable Sneesby also spoke about how anything students posted online became public knowledge. This included photographs they may share of themselves or others. He explained that sometimes when children post things they think it is private, but it is actually shared publicly. He also informed the students that once something had been posted it belonged to the owner of the site and that even if they deleted the photo or content, there would be a copy of it somewhere.

Constable Sneesby’s Three Top Points

1. Don’t talk to anyone you don’t know 2. It is social media not anti-social media (so don’t use it to argue/send nasty messages) 3. If anyone sends you anything inappropriate, children should report it to a trusted adult

(parent/teacher) and delete it once it has been reported.

We feel that this Presentation by Constable Sneesby was very informative for the students. He was happy to answer all of the student’s questions. We would like to thank him for his time.

Parents – How can you participate?

There are two ways that you will be able to complete the survey this semester. Please be assured that all survey responses are strictly confidential. The survey will close on Friday, 25th October.

1. You can access the TTFM survey from any device (computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone) using the following link:
