THE GLEN COVE LIBRARY OPENS ITS LONG-AWAITED TEEN ZONE!

The Teen Zone is equipped with 3 Dell Optiplex computers, an iMac Pro with a 27” screen, 3 32gb iPads, a 50” Samsung TV, an Xbox 1TB, a PS4 Pro 1TB, a Sony streaming blu-ray player, a Dremel Digilab 3D printer and a 3D scanner.

The Library director and staff are extremely grateful for the foresight and support of library trustees Michael Maher, Antonia Petrash, Susan Jakubiak (pictured), Richard Leff and Neil Ackerman and the te-nacity of Teen Services Librarian Lauren Loechner. PAINTING WORKSHOP: WINTER WONDERLAND

THURSDAYS, NOVEMBER 1, 8 & 15 AT 2PM Talented landscape artist Barbara Lewin will guide you step-by-step in a series of three painting classes. She’ll teach you how to paint a winter landscape scene with acrylic paint. No painting experience is necessary. FROM THE ROBERT R. COLES LONG ISLAND HISTORY ROOM

DID YOU KNOW.....

Until the railroad was constructed in 1868, it took a slow and lengthy seven hours to get from Glen Cove to Manhattan by horse and buggy.

There used to be two large lakes in the village: one where the firehouse is, the other behind the stores on Glen Street. They were called Upper and Lower Lakes.

LaMarcus Thompson, a Glen Cove resident, was an inventor who worked on developing roller coasters, otherwise known as gravity rides. Before that, he had focused his attentions on producing seamless hosiery.

Captain Kidd’s treasure was reputedly buried and dug up in what is now Garvies Point.

The first school was located where Staples parking lot is today. The next school was across the street on the corner of Highland Road and School Street.

Landing Road once went all the way to the water and was called Main Street. It ended at the ferry dock where the steamboats landed.

The famous 19th century artist, John LaFarge, had his first studio at the end of McLoughlin Street. The self-portrait he painted of himself in the woods there is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 1916 The Glen Cove Echo published a segment dedicated to the controversial issue of women's suffrage. Charlotte Nelson Way authored a pro-suffrage explanation that she had met some California women voters and found that "to the outward appearance they were normal. They look like us in Glen Cove, they have homes and children as we do — and they vote!"

Henry Clay Folger, President of Standard Oil, and his wife Emily, who resided in Glen Cove, amassed the world's most comprehensive collection - over 92,000 books and materials related to William Shakespeare. The Folger's collection became The Folger Shakespeare Library, located in Washington, DC.

In 1925, the midst of the prohibition era, two trucks filled with 308 cases of whiskey left Glen Cove and were headed for Manhattan. After a chase and a shoot-out with federal agents, four men including the two whiskey owners from Glen Cove were apprehended.

Henry's Confectionary, which still exists today, was established in 1929 on Glen Street and was one of few buildings that remained in place throughout massive urban renewal and economic ups and downs.

Actress Audrey Hepburn came to the Glen Cove train station as the star in the 1954 film Sabrina. She played the part of a chauffeur's capricious daughter looking for love.

In 1967 the City of Glen Cove proposed having an official flower. Violets won the honor, although one fellow proposed that dandelions had more merit, albeit some find them "irritating."

Pearsall Avenue was once called “Rattlesnake Hollow.”

The Dosoris area, including Morgan’s Island, was not part of the Musketa Cove purchase.

During the Civil War, the intersection of Cottage Row and the present School Street was named “Union Square.”

The clay beds at Garvies Point were the result of a glacial deposit along the north shore of Long Island.

of going from a blank piece of paper to an essay that “sings” will be demonstrated. Q & A to follow. Come prepared to take notes.

30TH ANNUAL WRITE AND ILLUSTRATE YOUR OWN BOOK CONTEST Sharpen those pencils and get your creative juices flowing! It’s time for our annual book contest. We invite all children in grades 2 to 5 to submit an original book they both wrote and illustrated. Glen Cove Librarians will read the books with consideration to grade level. Books will be judged on originality, creative expression, storyline, correct grammar usage and neatness of presentation. Author and illustrator may collaborate on one book, but only two students per book, please. If computer art or photography is used, credit must be given and it will be judged by its creative use within the story.

Be sure to label all books with name, age, grade, school and phone number. Teachers, if you are sending in books for your class, please include a separate typed list of the students who are entering the contest.

Books are due the week of February 25th. Winners will be notified in March. The winning books will be displayed in the Children’s Room and all entrants will receive participation certificates. Our Award Ceremony will be on Monday, March 18th.

With the next growing season always on our seed-saving minds, we’ve been collecting seed heads for the last few months. We’ll be “cleaning” these seeds (removing the chaff and other impurities) to improve their viability for the future. Bring your own seeds (clearly marked with plant name, variety, location and date of harvest) or help us clean ours. Please register.
