Social-Conflict Approach• A framework for building theory that sees

society as an arena of inequality that generates conflict and change

Glee• In Glee, the

cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester tries to cause problems for the Glee Club.

• Sue tries to have the Glee Club ended because she wants the girls to stay on her cheerleading squad.

Norms

• Norms that are widely observed and have great moral significance

Glee• At McKinley High

School, one of the norms is that the footballer’s throw slushies' on the geeky students like the Glee Club kids.

Significant Others

• People, such as parents or loved ones, who have special importance for socialization

Glee• In Glee, the significant

others consist of boyfriend/girlfriend relationships and adults who are married. Quinn and Finn are two high school students who are dating.

Social Interaction• The process by which people act and react in

relation to others

Glee• At McKinley High School,

the various groups have certain ways in which they interact with one another. The footballers punch each other on the shoulder and act tough whereas the Glee students give hugs or high-fives.

Achieved Status

• A social position a person takes on voluntarily that reflects personal ability and effort.

Glee• Finn achieves the status of quarterback on

the football team and loser by joining the Glee club. Quinn achieves her status of head cheerleader on the cheerleading team.

Social Group

• Two or more people who identify with and interact with one another.

Glee• The Glee Club is a social group because all of

the students identify with one another in singing and playing music

Homosexuality• Sexual attraction to someone of the same sex

Glee• Kurt, a guy in Glee Club who is extremely

fashionable, is attracted to Finn, the football quarterback.

Heterosexuality• Sexual attraction to someone of the other sex

Glee

• Rachel, the best soprano and self-proclaimed star in Glee Club, is attracted to Finn, the football quarterback

Conspicuous Consumption

• Buying and using products because of the “statement” they make about social position

Glee

• Finn and Quinn buy sunglasses to wear at school because they fear they are losing their popularity and they want to gain it back.

Stereotype

• A simplified description applied to every person in some category

Glee• The students at McKinley High School are

stereotyped into groups based off of who they talk to, what they wear, and how they act. Jocks are muscular, loud, and throw slushies'.
