October 2, 2017

Dear people,

The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 9 verse 17 (NRSV):

Neither is new wine put into old wineskins;

otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed;

but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.

Ready for the next step? We are setting up for a dynamic conversation of New Wine

in New Wineskins from our Lord’s words. You are invited into a conversation as

together we explore ideas generated from the shared lunch and vision sharing on

September 10 with Andrew Price and Hickory Bend.

If you want to participate - - - and I really hope you do! - - - save the date of

Saturday, October 28

for learning, spiritual formation and meaningful sharing of hopes.

Definite hours are not set as of today - - - that information will be coming right

away, as well as other details.

You will need to register no later than Monday, October 23 so that we have

supplies and lunch for you (individual box lunches will be ordered ahead of the

date). It is my pleasure to be taking care of lunch for you on that day - - - after all,

many of you have fed me! Registration forms will be available soon!

How exciting to serve as disciples together in this place and time! As we journey to

the 28th let us pray, hope and extend joyful hospitality in our world as we witness

to our Lord!

Grace and peace,

+Melisa

Book Events and Drama

The Uncontrolling Love of God Book Event to be held at Andrew Price on Saturday

October 14

On Saturday, October 14 from 9:00a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Andrew Price Memorial UMC will host Wesleyan

theologian, philosopher, and multi-disciplinary scholar,

Thomas Jay Oord for a day long seminar surrounding

interactions with his work in his book, The Uncontrolling

Love of God which is a book that explores the biblical

and theological models for understanding God’s

interaction with the world. What does it mean to say God

is in control? What if God’s power was understood

through the lens of God’s self-giving love rather than as

separate? What does that mean for our faith as disciples?

The October 14 event will be an interactive gathering featuring Dr. Oord and several

essay contributors who have essays in a new collection of conversations with this notion

of God’s uncontrolling love including local Methodist, Rick Quinn of McKendree UMC.

The event will feature a combination of conversations, Q&A, and breakout sessions

exploring Christian responses to power and God’s love and what this means for issues of

our social and political life together, how we understand suffering and evil with notions

of God’s “will”, and what it means to pray for healing to name a few.

This event on October 14 is the second stop of this tour in Nashville with a Friday event

being held at Woodmont Christian Church. For more information on the event and the

schedule and to register, see the Facebook page link: https://www.facebook.com/

Fuel Program Commitment Cards

“When I was hungry, you gave me food…” Matthew 25.

FUEL bags are bags of simple food items ready to eat and child friendly. The intention is

to provide extra nutrition over the weekend for students who are identified by their

teachers at Hickman Elementary. The FUEL bags are expected to cost approximately

$4.50 per bag. Last year we served more than 70 children each week of the program. If

you wish to be a part of this ministry you may fill out a blue commitment card for a

specific dollar amount per week, per month, per semester or a one time contribution.

You may find the blue commitment cards in the foyer and narthex. You may leave the

completed cards in the offering plate or send them to the office. Thank you in advance

for your generosity!

XYZ Trip October 10

The XYZ group will meet at the church on Tuesday,

October 10 at 10:30 a.m and leave the church at

10:45 a.m. to travel to Douglas BP, Springfield, TN for

lunch. If you have not signed up you may do do in the

foyer or contact Brenda Vanderpool, 615-405-8394.

Trunk or Treat

The annual Trunk or Treat will be held in the back parking lot on Sunday, October 22nd from 4:00-5:30 p.m. We need volunteers to hand out goodies to about 100 children. Please sign up on the sheet in the foyer if you can participate and designate if you will need electricity for decorations. You may park in any unmarked space in the back parking lot unless it is marked for someone else. Enter through the alley and be at your spot by 3:30 p.m. If you can't come, you may bring candy to Christy by October 22nd.

Wonderful Wednesday Please join us on Wednesdays

in the chapel at 6:15 p.m.

during “Chapel Time” for a few

moments of centering with

prayer and music. The

Pastor’s Bible Study, Blast

(children’s program) and The

Jubilee Ringers rehearsal will

begin at 6:30 p.m. The

Chancel Choir will rehearse at

7:40 p.m. in the sanctuary.

ALTARSCAPES

Acts of Worship include visual aspects of our life in community.

In an effort to involve more participants and to save the Church

the costs of unreimbursed florist bills the Worship Committee is

asking for your participation on celebrating our faith in altar

arrangements.

Options to participate are:

1. Natural green plants/branches

2. Cut flowers from your own garden or purchased

3. Rockscapes or other hardscape items such as pottery

4. Candles, cloth other natural items to emphasize theme of day

or season

5. Thanksgiving stones

6. Bible(s)

7. Bread and or fruit

8. Mission gifts (such as canned goods for Second Harvest)

9. Prayer symbols (bells, butterfly cuttings, prayer partner cards, stewardship commitments)

10. Worship items (certainly Holy Communion but also other worship items such as stoles, hymnals)

11. You may contact florist of your own choosing to provide arrangement. Because flowers will need

to be delivered on a Saturday for Sunday worship you will need to contact the church office to borrow

a key to meet the florist or you may deliver the arrangement yourself.

For any of the above options advise the church office of

the week you would like to participate at least three

weeks prior the date you would prefer.

If your altarscape is in honor or memory then provide

that information to the church office in writing at least

three weeks prior to the date. (For example: Today’s

tulips are in memory of my mother, Helen Laverne

Derseweh. Given by Pastor Melisa.)
