Stay food conscious andavoid waste this Ramadan

1.3b tons of food wasted every year: UN

KUWAIT CITY, June 13: The Holy monthof Ramadan is a time when Muslims allover the world come together in prayer, and it is also a time of reflection for every-one. But are we reflecting on the amountof food we make and store, and do we givethought to the food that we waste or theenergy that we use?

According to figures by the Food andAgriculture Organization of the UnitedNations (FAO), roughly one-third of foodproduced for human consumption is lost orwasted globally, which amounts to about1.3 billion tons per year, and Ramadanmay add to this, with people cooking evenmore than usual. To put this in perspective, local retailers anticipate a 10 to 15 percentincrease in sales during the period ofRamadan and through Eid. In fact it is esti-mated that nearly 3.27 million tons of foodproduced and imported in the UAE andworth more than US $3.54 billion (AED13 billion) are wasted every year. However, with just a few lifestyle changes, people can not only cut costs and reducefood wastage but also set an example forothers this Ramadan.

Buy in bulk and eat it too: Shopping inbulk becomes part of the routine this timeof year. But it can maximize your refriger-ator’s performance and cut down on foodwastage. The emptier your refrigerator, themore warm air will enter it, and the moreenergy it will use. Keeping the fridge fullystocked and the door closed optimizescooling, which improves your refrigera-tor’s efficiency. Cooking larger meals andsaving the leftovers will also cut down onthe time that you spend cooking. The sav-ings made with less cooking results infewer greenhouse emissions and reducesenergy consumption.

Make new habits: Maintaining a sort ofrefrigerator etiquette can save an averagehousehold considerable time and money. For maximum energy efficiency and foodsafety, set the refrigerator to 4∞C, and thefreezer to 0∞C. And cleaning the interiorsstretches out optimum performance forsummers to come.

Shop smart: Technology has advancedfar enough for a refrigerator to send you areminder on your smartphone when youare running low on supplies or even order

it by itself. This adds convenience to yourlife, but less obvious advances add qualityand ease. The Samsung Food ShowcaseRefrigerator features the Showcase MetalCooling, which returns the fridge to opti-mal temperatures within one minute after adoor is opened and closed — up to 38 per-cent faster than a conventional refrigerator. At the same time, the Deodorizing Filterpromotes better air circulation to power-fully deodorize the refrigerator from thetop-down.

At the core of the refrigerator’s design isthe exclusive Digital Inverter Technology;an innovative solution that controls itscompressor speed and ensures that cool airis generated only when required. WithDigital Inverter Technology, the FoodShowcase Refrigerator uses less energythan conventional refrigerators , and theshowcase system offers up to 20 percentmore space than a conventional two-doorfridge.

The Samsung Food ShowcaseRefrigerator is available from all majorretailers across the UAE priced at AED11,999.

With the right technology in your homeand a few tweaks to your daily habits, youcan enjoy Eid knowing that you havereduced food wastage and energy use, too.
