PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful and relaxing holiday and are filled with vim and vigour for another action-packed term at GCC.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

Thank you all of you who participated in the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion and diligently collected

your tokens. We filled 695 sheets adding up to 41,700 points. Although Woolworths don’t assign a dollar value to the points, the additional educational resources were substantial and very welcome. I would like to thank Woolworths for their generosity and investing into the future of our children in such a tangible way. I would also like to thank Mr Michael Lunn for making the trip and delivering these fantastic resources to us personally.

Open Day

Open Day is only one week away on Saturday May 14 between 10am and 2pm. For many of you this was your first introduction to our excellent school and this is going to be true for many of our new and future families. It is a great day when we as a College are able to share with our present and future community what it means to belong to GCC and what educational opportunities we can offer.

There will be student performances, plenty of entertainment for the little ones such as a jumping castle and petting zoo, the Eagle Hunt and a wealth of other attractions. The train will also be coming back again this year so that you will be able to more comfortably tour our ever-expanding campus. Of course, if you prefer a more in-depth and personalised tour, we will have student-led tours operating throughout the day. There will also be a variety of food options for free and for purchase. The Open Day program was emailed out to all families last Friday so please consult this for more details. It is also on our website.

Open Day is a great opportunity for you to see your child’s classroom and some of their work. It is also a time when you can catch up with some of the recent developments that have been happening around the campus.

Finally, it is the perfect opportunity to invite your friends and neighbours so they can see first hand this school that you have been talking to them about for so long. They will be able to meet me, the other Heads of School and teaching staff so they can have their questions about the College answered.

Baby news

Mrs Rochelle Harrison, our Primary Music Teacher who left us near the end of last term on maternity leave, gave birth to a lovely baby girl named Amara Ellee on March 21. All the family are doing well and I am sure you will join with me in congratulating Rochelle and her husband Ken on the birth of their first child.

We would also like to congratulate Chappy Mick and his wife Ann on the birth of their new baby boy named Elijah Sean on April 14. I am happy to say that the family are also doing very well.

Staff movements

Unfortunately, since the last newsletter we have had some staff who have left the College. Mel Parker has been a College staff member for the last five years in various capacities beginning as a Teaching Assistant in Prep and finally as the Administrative Assistant in the Future Pathways Department.

Also, you would have seen my email last week about the sudden resignation of Lesley-ann Rosenberg our Lower Primary Coordinator. Lesley-ann was with us for 10 years beginning as a Prep teacher and finally as the Lower Primary Coordinator since 2011. Each class in the lower primary have been working on a farewell card for Mrs Rosenberg among other gifts and items which we will ensure she receives.

Both of these ladies have been wonderful contributors to the College and will be sadly missed by us and by the wider College community. I am sure you will join with me in thanking them for their many years of service and wishing them God’s richest blessings on their future endeavours.

Easter and Anzac Services

At the end of last term we had our Easter Service where as a College from Prep to Year 12 we celebrated the gift of eternal salvation we have through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was an excellent service with student-led dance, drama and musical performances and a vibrant message of hope from Chappy Fi. I would like to congratulate the Middle School students and staff for their organisation of this event. Photos here.

We celebrated our Anzac service on the Friday before Anzac Day and this was also a ceremony marked with the sense of occasion that such an important day deserves. We were privileged to hear from Mr Jason Hatcher, a soldier who had only just recently returned from Afghanistan, talk about his experiences of mateship and courage. He also spoke about how the Australian Defence Force are making important peacetime contributions in places like East Timor. I would like to congratulate the students and staff of Primary School for their excellent organisation of this event. Photos here.

Sibling entry

If you have siblings interested in enrolling at GCC please note the following:

Parents must complete and submit a separate Application for Enrolment form to the College for each new sibling. This is the first step in the enrolment process and families are cautioned that whilst siblings are given priority enrolment consideration, they are not guaranteed a place within the College. Please note that waiting lists are being experienced across some year levels and early submission of Application Forms is encouraged for consideration in future years.

Enrolment Procedure:

A completed Application for Enrolment Form (one per student) is to be returned to the Main Administration office together with a $50 application fee per student. This fee is not refundable. Please note that each application/fee does not guarantee a place at the College.

1. Application forms are to be supported with the following documentation:

•NAPLANresults(whereapplicable) •Lasttwoyears’schoolreports •Copyofbirthcertificate For further documentation please see the checklist in the application.2. Failure to provide supporting documentation delays the

application for enrolment process unnecessarily.3. Due to waiting lists, early submission of applications is

advised.4. An enrolment interview may then be scheduled with

the appropriate Head of School. You will be advised of the outcome of the interview by mail.

5. Should a placement with the College be offered, this will be deemed to be accepted once a signed acceptance and bond payment of $400 per family is received by the College.

If you have any doubt that you have followed this procedure, please contact College Registrar : Sonya Bowden to clarify.

Sonya Bowden, College Registrar

Anzac Community Service

It was another extremely positive showing from our College at our local march as we paid our respects to those who sacrificed so much in the service of our country. It was a pleasure to make an even greater contribution to the service itself than in previous years as our band provided the music, our College Captains Moale and Josh read “For the Fallen” and Hannah and Lani providing some beautiful singing. Bakani did a fantastic job as the bugler for the service. It was a very special service made all the more meaningful by the fact that it marked a new and beautiful cenotaph erected at Turner Park.

I would like to once again thank everyone who participated. Anzac day is important to us and it is also important to teach the next generation about something of what it meant to lay down your life for the values that we take pretty much for granted today. More photos here.

Beauty and the Beast

Have you got your tickets for Beauty and the Beast? The students have been working incredibly hard during rehearsal and the opening night is only a fortnight away. This is far and away the most ambitious musical we have ever done and it is fitting that we hold such an event in the Caloundra Events Centre. The sets and costumes are amazing, the talented cast are ready and the orchestra are sounding incredible. It promises to be a thoroughly entertaining performance.

An adult ticket is 25 dollars which represents excellent value and can be purchased by clicking here.

Date Claimer Funfest 30 July

Don’t forget about Funfest on 30 July. By now all of the classes and year levels in the Middle and Senior School will have been allocated their unique and particular stalls and the excitement is growing. This is a great community event that the students enjoy very much. Please donate generously when your parent representative asks you for your help in readiness for Funfest this year.

Trivia night this Saturday

The annual P and F Trivia night is on this Saturday night and you would have received information about this. They are always really fun nights and I look forward to reporting more about the event in the next newsletter.

Mike Curtis, Principal

No dogs allowed on campus

To ensure the safety of our students, please do not bring your dog on campus before, during, or after school. Even the most well-behaved dog can be unpredictable in different circumstances, around young children or students running and playing sports.

If you are tying your dog up off-campus, please ensure it is not near a pathway or where children need to pass.

PRIMARY NEWS

With Mothers’ Day this weekend there have been a number of class activities and items during the week which focussed on “Our Mums”.

In preparing for Wednesday’s Prep – Year 2 Chassembly I read a number of articles about Motherhood. How can one simple word encompass such a wealth of feeling? For me

personally, the impact my mother had on me throughout my life could never be measured. All mothers have an incredible impact on their children.

Whether you are the mother of a number of children or the mother of one, whether you are a mother of girls, boys or both with a support network of family members and friends or a single mum with limited support, whether you have husbands who have fly in, fly out jobs or a grandparent who is actually “Mother” to your grandchildren - what children need to feel secure, loved, be resilient and develop a strong moral compass to navigate life, remains the same. Your circumstances as Mum may be more difficult, but children all need the same things. They need love, patience, forgiveness, firm but gentle guidance, understanding, quality time with us, a listening ear, trust and unconditional LOVE.

Having raised children of my own I know the joys, the pain, the busyness, the weariness, the happiness and the absolute blessing of motherhood. If we keep the lines of communication open whenever they need to speak to us and mutual trust is high in our priorities, our job as mother will be a success and our children will be blessed and bless us.

To all our mothers here at the College, we pray that you and your family have a wonderful day together on Sunday. We hope that you are honoured as you truly deserve and that your children will show you how much you are loved.

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY

Start Smart

In Week 2 primary classes were involved in lessons from the Start Smart program sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank. Information on this is below.

START SMART PRIMARY PROGRAM

Research suggests it is never too early to learn money management skills. And it is never too late to start learning.

Start Smart teaches students about financial literacy, empowering them to make wise financial decisions for themselves. We have gradually expanded our offerings

to cater to as wide a number of students as possible, customising our workshops according to their needs, interests and levels of learning.

Our original program launched in 2007 and consisted of a range of workshops aimed at secondary school students. Each workshop was tailored towards a topic of direct relevance to secondary students’ daily lives and experiences: Earning, Saving, Spending and Investing.

Following the success of our Secondary program, the Commonwealth Bank decided to extend Start Smart to primary schools in 2010. For the Primary workshops, Start Smart consulted specialists in primary education, cognitive development, instructional design and financial literacy.

The Primary program consists of three stages, each of which corresponds to a different level of learning. The workshops are engaging as well as educational, featuring characters such as Captain SuperCents and Coach Cash, who represents all the temptations to spend money needlessly.

The Start Smart program will hopefully impact the financial future of our primary students as they become mindful of how to handle money. We will have the opportunity again next year to continue their financial literacy lesson for our students.

Anzac March 2016 - Photos here

Thank you once again this year for the wonderful support of the Beerwah Anzac March and service. It always makes us very proud to watch our students participate and take part in the ceremony I am sure as parents you felt the same sense of pride on Anzac Day. We will email the Certificate of Attendance, either at Beerwah or another venue, within a couple of weeks.

Introducing Mrs Sarah Leary as the P – Year 2 Coordinator

Mrs Leary was our first P – Year 2 Coordinator some years ago before she took leave following the birth of her first child. We are pleased to announce that Mrs Leary has been appointed to this role until the end of the year. If you have any concerns regarding pastoral care or behaviour management, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Leary by phone 5439 0033 or email [email protected]

Mrs Leary will also be working on various events for the Lower Primary throughout the year. I know you will make her very welcome as she takes Chassembly and works with your children.

KITCHEN GARDEN NEWS

The Maleny Show is on the 27 and 28 of May and we have been very busy in Kitchen Garden preparing our entries for the show competitions. The theme for this year’s show is ‘Renew, Re-use and Recycle’.

All of our entries in the Handicrafts area reflects this theme. We have made wind chimes out of old CD’s, weaved baskets out of newspapers, drink coasters from old magazines, bugs from old bottles, collages from scrap paper and divinely decorated storage boxes from old costume jewellery. We have cut, glued, pasted, rolled and tied some amazing creations which will also be on display at Open Day.

Each class will also be entering something tasty in the cookery section which we will make in Weeks 6 and 7.

Our junior cooks have whipped up some delicious food in the kitchen; apricot, pear and passionfruit slice, baba ghanoush (yes, you can get a child to eat eggplant!) with home made flat breads and chicken and corn soup.

Our green thumbs have planted lots of potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, shallots, lettuce, snow peas, bok choy, zucchini, squash and sugar snap peas. Fresh, juicy passionfruit have been enjoyed in abundance and our corn, eggplant and fresh herbs all found their way into our recipes.

Until next time, happy gardening! From the Kitchen Garden team

Magnificent Mothers’ Night

It is a highlight of our year in Prep to welcome our beautiful mums to Prep for some one-on-one time with their precious Preppie, experiencing many of the activities we have fun doing in our classes. From 6:30pm on Tuesday 3 May, we played, created, sang, danced, chatted and indulged in the delicious supper the mums provided to share. Enjoy viewing our photos to understand what a great time was had by all.

Prep Cheers Up Humpty Dumpty

On Thursday 14 April, nursery rhyme characters were cordially invited to Prep for Humpty Dumpty’s surprise party. Poor Humpty had been so downhearted after his fall that Old King Cole encouraged us to plan a party for Humpty. Each class determined a good time and venue for their party, and made decisions about the food, games and decorations needed. Many wonderful visitors came to witness the delightful parade of characters led around by Old Mother Hubbard, Little Miss Muffet, Jack and Jill, Old King Cole and Pussy Cat (who had visited the Queen). We then recited or sang three nursery rhymes for the gathering. I KNOW we made Humpty’s day super special (and did some exciting learning too!) As well as the actual party time, we participated in nursery rhyme activities such as sequencing,

role play and craft.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the Prep parents for their support and their impressive creativity with the variety of costumes worn by the children, simple or elaborate.

Congratulations to the children who learnt their specific character’s rhyme to share with their friends and for participating so well. More photos here.

Once again, it was a great day to be in Prep.

CHAPPY CHATTER

Loving the unlovable

You all know that person. The one who just makes your skin crawl. Perhaps it is that they are too loud, too boisterous, or too keen for people’s attention. Perhaps it is that they are always whinging, or they are too needy. If you don’t know whom I am talking about, you better be careful; it might be you.

In our lives we are all faced with those people we might consider unlovable. Rarely do we meet such people with the open disdain we feel they deserve, but instead resort to snide comments, avoidance, or whinging to our friends or family. Those of us who are more mature have learned the excellent coping strategy of grinning and bearing it.

Unfortunately for us all, Jesus calls us to a higher standard. We are actually exhorted to “bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you” (Luke 6:28). If this is how we are expected to treat those who are actively seeking to hurt us, how much more should we love those who simply annoy us? We need to find a way to love the unlovable.

This is only possible to do when we grasp that in God’s eyes, we all are quite unlovable! I know we all have the tendency to think of ourselves as the bee’s knees, but the Bible says that “everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” (Romans 3:23).

The surprising good news is that “God demonstrated his love for us in this: while we were still enemies, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). By simply trusting in what Jesus did for you, even though you were like an enemy to him, you can have a permanent relationship with a loving God. It is as I ponder and accept this love, that I become able and willing to love the unlovable.

Baby news for Youth Pastor Mick

We are Praising our God and excited to announce the birth of our Son - Elijah Sean Spann. Born 14 April, at 7:32am weighing 4.54kgs. The home birth went well with no major surprises.

Alayna was initially a little shocked when she came out of her room in the morning and saw lots of people and a swimming pool! She has since recovered and become quite the doting sister.

Psalms 36:5 Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Thanks to all our friends and family for your love, support and well wishes. Elijah means: “my God is YAHWEH” Sean is the name of one of our close friends and means: “God is gracious” “gift from God”. More photos here.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Next week our Year 7 and 9 students sit their NAPLAN tests. These tests give valuable data that helps GCC reflect on if we are best meeting the needs of our students. These tests can be daunting and tiring - please encourage our ‘NAPLANers’. If your child is sitting the test check that they have all the necessary equipment, are

well rested and have prepared themselves for the day with a healthy breakfast.

Canberra Trip and Year 9 Camp.

Year 7 and Year 9 returned at the end of Week 2 with grins on their faces albeit a wee bit tired. You can read the full article and see all the Canberra photos by clicking on this link and the Year 9 camp photos by clicking this link.

Once again our Year 7s have had quality exposure to our nation’s capital, through first hand experiences of seeing the government in operation, visiting our nation’s War Memorial, participating in sporting and science centre activities and significant exposure to iconic cultural items. Thank you to the teachers who made a huge commitment of their time to make this trip such a success.

Outdoor Education camps always have a huge impact on a teenager’s mind; helping them realise their potential. This year, after the first day of the Year 9 camp two-night hike, I wasn’t sure if the normally energetic bunch of girls I was with would come to this realisation. They were hard on themselves and unsure if they could make it up a very steep mountain with full back packs. However, they did it and certainly realised their potential.

Year 7 Canberra Trip -

On 18 April the Year 7 Students from Glasshouse Christian College flew down to Canberra to start their weeklong adventure learning about their country’s capital and our democratic government.

Leaving early Monday morning we were to fly to Sydney, looking forward to our visit to Taronga Zoo and then across Sydney Harbour on the ferry to have a group photo out the front of the Sydney Opera House. Arriving at Taronga Zoo we had morning tea then broke into groups and spent quite a few hours visiting a variety of animals and experiencing their habitats. We had lunch at the zoo and then caught the ferry across for some photos at the Sydney Opera House. After the photos were done we were back on the bus and off to our accommodation at the Ibis Hotel at Eagle Hawk.

Tuesday saw us all get up to a beautiful day which allowed us to enjoyably explore Canberra. We went up Telstra Tower saw the beautiful sites of Canberra, visited the Royal Australian Mint (unfortunately we could not take samples), sat in Old Parliament House and learnt about the history of our government. We had lunch in the beautiful park opposite Old Parliament House and then set off to the CSIRO to participate in their Discovery Program. We finished the day at the Australian Institute of Sport (A.I.S).

Wednesday was another gorgeous day. We visited the National Film and Sound Archive, learnt about Indigenous art at the National Art Gallery, went on a ride around Lake Burley-Griffen, visited Questacon and finally let our hair down at Iplay.

UNIFORM SHOP

Ties and Hats: Our new Secondary ties (maroon colour) and grey formal hats are in stock. If your child loaned an old-style tie or formal hat earlier in the year you will need to bring them into Uniform Shop to complete the swap-over before the end of this term.

Alterations to New Logo: If you still have uniforms with our old College logo, we can help you get the logo unpicked and a new logo embroidered on so your uniform will be ready for the compulsory change at the start of next year. Don’t leave it too late to bring your items in as there will be a lengthy wait towards the end of the year. Send in a few items at a time throughout Term 2 and 3 and you will only have to wait around one week for them to be completed. Drop your items off to Main Admin with a completed form, available here.

Stephanie McCredie, Uniform Shop Coordinator

On Thursday we took a trip to the National Capital Exhibition, visited New Parliament House, participated in a “Strange but True” Tour and joined in the closing ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. Natalie Beakey and Jacob Barbeler represented GCC by laying a wreath at the Eternal Flame.

Friday saw us departing for Sydney where we “just” managed to catch our flight (security were just a little overzealous in their duty, screening 84 students).

Credit goes to all the students who displayed maturity throughout the trip. People commented on how well behaved all the students were and what a credit they were to Glasshouse Christian College.

I would personally like to thank Mrs Horrigan, Miss Hilton, Mr Asplin, Mr Kassleman, Mrs Morris and Chappy Fi for their support and endless patience and enthusiasm. Thank you to our wonderful Year 7 parents who trusted us with their children. A big thanks to Carl and Phil, our wonderful bus drivers and GoOZ Tours for their help in organising this trip.

A very special thanks to the Australian Government who, without their financial assistance, would make it difficult for us to visit Canberra. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education and therefore makes a significant contribution to the cost of the trip.

GCC student in Hairspray

I was fortunate enough, earlier this year to audition and get a role in the latest production of Hairspray (the big fat arena spectacular) at the Brisbane Convention Centre in April.

The musical was put on by a great musical theatre production company called ‘Harvest Rain’

We had rehearsals/bootcamp in January and for the April holidays it was full on dancing, singing and laughs. I had a fantastic time and everyone performed a great show.

I was part of the ensemble which consisted of around 800 kids from the SE Queensland.

The main characters were performed by Simon Burke, Christine Anu, Tim Campbell, Wayne Scott Kermond, Amanda Muggleton and Lauren McKenna

Please see important points below for clarification on the School Banking Program. Banking Day is WEDNESDAY.

Place your money into your yellow Banking Wallet, complete your deposit slip and place the wallet into the Grey Banking Satchel in the classroom on Wednesday morning.

One silver Dollarmites token will be issued for every School Banking Deposit made (maximum one per week). No sharing of tokens is allowed.

Deposits are automatically calculated on the school banking system. Every time students deposit the tally increases by 1 and when a reward is ordered the tally is decreased by 10.

Students must have a tally of 10 or more in the system before a reward can be ordered.

If students have done banking at another school in the past 12 months you can advise the name of your previous school and we will have your token number transferred over.

Students are welcome to send in a note asking what their token tally is. When students reach a tally of 10, please include your reward coupon along with your 10 tokens. Once your reward is ordered it should arrive at school in approximately 1-2 weeks. It will then be included in the class Banking Bag.

All rewards are available from the term they are released until stock runs out, so for example a Term 1 reward may still be ordered in Term 2.

School Banking is processed by parent volunteer School Banking Coordinators. At GCC, this is Mrs Amanda Turner. Please take the time to thank them for their efforts as this is a great fundraiser for a needy school in Africa. Any banking related questions should be directed to Amanda Turner.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Building Community

This year we initiated a new Captain’s position called Faith and Community Captains. Their role is to help build community at the school and encourage our students in their Christian walk. At the start of the year these captains, along with our College Captains went on a leadership camp

called Momentum. They came away invigorated and ready to make an impact on our students. This was followed up at the start of this term with a leadership training day called Revive. Last week we had a group called Peer Power speak to our Year 12s on Leading a Legacy where as student leaders, they were enabled to identify effective and ineffective ways in which they lead. It examined how we place certain values on different social groups within the school community and how to bridge these divides. The workshop was focussed strongly on practical relational communication skills the students could use to more effectively connect with those they do and don’t know.

After this session, the Year 11s were presented a different program called T.E.A.M Dynamic. They were joined by the Year 12 Captains to help bridge the divide that sometimes exists between the grades. This session highlighted the unique personality profile of every individual. Rather than ‘label’ people, it encouraged students to become more aware of their own strengths and challenges. Our students learned to respect diversity within the cohort thus moving towards unity. Students were able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and then apply this process to the group as a whole. The end result was students growing in understanding of themselves and their peers, thereby generating a greater cohesion.

We are following on from these sessions with a special program for our Year 10s later in the year. We will be splitting the year level into males and females and allowing them to explore the special God given characteristics of their gender. Boys will be doing a program which is designed to inspire and provoke our young men to consider what is the essence of healthy masculinity and becoming a man (rights and responsibilities). Our young ladies will be doing a program which is designed to encourage students to consider how they view and value what it is to be a healthy female in today’s society.

In the final week of this term the Year 11s will be going on camp. Half way through the camp a group of our Year 12 Captains will be joining the Year 11 students and leading one of the evening programs. This is the first time we have taken Year 12s along on a Year 11 camp to act as mentors as they pass on the mantle of leadership. This is recognised on

Awards Night when our College Captains of 2016 perform the Ceremony of the Charter and pass on the leadership of our student body to those Captains appointed for 2017.

Other happenings in Senior:

Cross Country: Our interhouse cross country was a huge success. It was so pleasing to see the cross country level of participation from our students. Thank you to the parents as well for your support of this event. See all the photos here.

Athletics: On 25 May we have our Interhouse Athletics’ competition. This is a Wednesday so it is important that Year 11 and 12 students clear their calendars and ensure they are able to attend. It is students’ responsibility to let employers know that they cannot work this day. This day is considered compulsory. Students who cannot attend must see me with a suitable explanation.

GCC’s Got Talent: Next Thursday we hold our Term 2 Legacy Cup Competition that celebrates the many varied talents of our students. Each house can nominate a maximum of three entries to compete. This event seems to grow each year and we are looking forward the performances that students will do next week.

ANZAC March: Thank you for your support for this event. It is such a great testimony to our wider community when so many students turn up to march and remember those who sacrificed so much for our freedom. More photos here.

Parent Teacher Interviews: Please do not feel that Parent Teacher Interviews are the only time to contact a teacher. Any time you have a concern or a query, please contact your child’s teachers as soon as possible. I always encourage Senior students to become more independent learners and get them to discuss issues they may have with staff as well but if that is not getting your concerns answered then email or phone teachers directly. Next term Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 2 on 26 July.

Year 10 Work Experience: I’m pleased to hear that our students were fantastic ambassadors for the College and learnt a great deal during their work experience. Overall, the feedback from both employers and students has been very positive. You can see the photos here and read more about it in the Future Pathways article.

Study Skills Seminars: Again we partnered with Elevate Education who presented sessions to our Year 10s and 11s on time management and memory mnemonics. The feedback from our student surveys was very positive and I’m

Agricultural Science

Agricultural Science has been a whirlwind of activities and events this term, and we are only four weeks in!

The first week saw the Year 10 Ag students learning the fine art of how to make Camembert cheese. This lesson was aimed at evaluating raw products, their quality and the subsequent value adding process. The students’ cheese is now in the maturation process and will hopefully be at peak ripening and flavour for the Maleny Show.

Year 10 students have also been investigating pulses, which are grain legumes, grown as annual crops and harvested when the seed or grain is matured. In particular the students have been investigating how the inoculation of pulse affects nodulation and nitrogen fixation. It has involved significant learning into how to conduct real world research trials as well as scientific report writing.

Meanwhile the Year 12 Ag students have been delving into their future study options and career possibilities, going to the University of Queensland’s Gatton Campus for an Agricultural Careers Day, meeting current students, lecturers and future employers. Apart from all the wonderful information on hand, they even got a personal perspective on university life from last year’s GCC Ag Science graduates, Taylah Holt and Taylor Olsen who are studying Ag Science degrees there and loving it!

The final event in the first three weeks was our annual Farm and Feed Day, where we showcased the GCC Ag plot and the students’ amazing knowledge. We enjoyed a pig-on-the-spit and other incredible dishes created by our Hospitality students. It was a great way to open up the farm to parents, businesses and College staff. Overall it was a resounding success and both the Agricultural Science and Hospitality students should be incredibly proud of what they achieved. Finally, a BIG thank you for the amazing support provided by Julie Peters, Michael Briggs and Cherie MacLeod, some of GCC’s awesome staff! More photos here.

Year 10 Delorean Students Compete at Science and Technology Challenge

Sixteen Year 10 Delorean Project students ventured to the University of the Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre on Wednesday 16 March to compete in the Sunshine Coast Science and Engineering Challenge, which was conducted by the University of Newcastle.

The students worked in eight teams against eight other schools across the region. The team challenges involved solving STEM problems, which integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The tasks aimed to develop team collaboration, communication and innovative thinking skills.

This problem or enquiry-based learning included building the strongest gold mine bridge, designing an all-terrain space buggy for a mission to Mars, building catapults, creating electricity networks, building special lifting devices and mechanical hands, and constructing earthquake proof towers.

The Delorean team did exceptionally well for their first competition. Joshua Coumi and Keeley Thomas are to be congratulated for their first place achievement and trophy in the Electrosafe category. Other teams achieved a close second in building catapults and a third in bridge building categories. The Year 10 students just missed out on a third podium position with a very close fourth overall.

The whole team are to be commended for their excellent collaboration and thinking skills. Congratulations on a very successful rewarding day.

Farm and Feed

Year 12 Hospitality Studies students worked hard to present a selection of six different salads and sweets, using the produce from the farm. This was an assessment task and the students were marked on the preparation of the food – back of house. We then transported all the dishes out on the school bus to set up in the farms’ shed. It was a great success and there was lots of positive comments about the food.

Julie Peters, Head of Hospitality and Textiles

pleased that they are becoming more strategic learners.

Drug Education: At the end of last year our College applied for a grant for Drug Education and I’m pleased to report that we received funding for this. We are now investigating how we can use this to benefit our students. We will also be partnering with Technitest, a Sunshine Coast company who, as one of their services, performs drug and alcohol testing of employees in the workplace.

Dance – on stage and in water

Term 2 has had a busy start for the Dance Department. In Week 1 the Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 Dance students spent an evening at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane watching the Queensland Ballet perform ‘A Midsummer’s Nights Dream’. The students were even treated to a post show talk lead by the Ballet Master, Greg Horsman, and some of the principal and soloist dancers.

The Year 10 Dance class also had the opportunity to participate in an Aqua Aerobics class at the Beerwah pool. This class allowed students to develop a greater understanding of the many ways dance forms can be used for health and fitness purposes. More photos here.

A poignant birthday celebration

This term in Year 10 English, our students have been exploring the lives of two boys trapped in the tragic time frame of World War II and the Holocaust. Recently, in celebration of the date identified by the author John Boyne as the birthday of the two boys in his story, “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”, our students and teachers marked one English lesson with small birthday party, notably enjoying a variety of cakes.

Rebecca Bradney-Wareing, the student who reminded her teacher about the significant date was interviewed about her love of the book:

What I think about the book?

“The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas” is an empowering book for many reasons. One reason being its moral – ‘Lines may divide us, but hope will unite us’. This is a true statement that can make a long-lasting impact on one’s mind. Bruno and Shmuel are two best friends whose friendship survived against the odds. The lesson we can learn from them is that ‘friendship is stronger than any boundaries’. This applies to all aspects of life and this book is a great example of it!

What I think about the characters?

Bruno and Shmuel are two very different boys, living in two very different worlds, on two very different sides of the fence. Their urge to play and explore each other’s worlds are what forms their bond, creating an everlasting friendship that would survive even death itself! This is why these two are the main characters of an empowering tale of friendship and survival during one of the darkest eras of history known to mankind (WW2).

Why I chose to tell my teacher this/what the teachers did?

When I discovered that my triple English lesson on Friday coincided with Bruno and Shmuel’s birthdays, I asked if my teacher (Miss Fleming) had picked up on this too. It turns out I was one of the first to discover this! Naturally, I wanted to tell my teacher in case she decided to hold a birthday party for them – which fortunately, she did! It was very rewarding in the end, for me – and I’m glad I got the chance to share this coincidental day with my class, for it was well worth it!

FUTURE PATHWAYSYear 10s embarked on a week in the ‘Real World’ in Week 2.

Preparation began in November when students were asked to start thinking about jobs and industries that might interest them in the future. Students, parents and the College approached many, many businesses in our endeavour to get each and every Year 10 a placement that they could

be excited about.

We had placements in speech pathologists, food science research laboratories, chiropractors, mechanics, doctor’s surgeries, law courts, defense lawyers, radiologists, beauticians, architects, radio stations, surveyors, financial planners, psychologists, electrical engineers, the list goes on and on.

Visiting employers was an absolute joy as our Year 10 cohort did themselves and the College proud. All their lessons on first impressions, using initiative, good body language and communication skills had been followed to the letter with employers raving about our polite, interested and impressive students.

Highlights are too many to list but include Ella Mitchell seeing the work it takes to run a charity at Destiny Rescue, Emily Logar attending court for a week with Bosscher Defense Lawyers in Brisbane, Liam Rush being offered a carpentry apprenticeship, Rebekah Atkins getting her hands on the animals at Australia Zoo and Jasmine Andrews joining the Research and Development team at Gourmet Garden.

A record number of our students have been offered part-time work with their work experience employer.

We are very proud of all of our Year 10’s for getting out of their comfort zone and giving the week all they had. They have certainly left a great impression with businesses around the coast and further afield, with the most repeated comment from employers being that ‘they are just a pleasure to have’.

Lots of employers have said they are more than happy to host a student from Glasshouse Christian College next year based on the quality of this year’s cohort. Thank you Year 10! You are a pleasure to work with indeed. More photos here.

University and TAFE Open Days - Dates for your Diaries

Most tertiary providers hold open days in July and August each year for future students. These are a great way to explore your post-school study options.

At an open day, you’ll be able to find out about more about the courses and qualifications on offer, talk to staff and current students, and check out the campus and facilities to see if they’re right for you.

If you can’t make the open day, don’t panic. Many universities, private colleges and TAFE Queensland also hold campus tours and information sessions throughout the year. Contact the relevant institution for more information.

Click on this link to see all the Open Days.

QTAC applications open in August and I will hold an information session for all Year 12s on the process before then.

challenge they must read or experience the allocated number of books for their year level during the reading period. Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.

Why read?

Literacy skills are vital to ensuring children have the best chance to succeed in their schooling and life. The PRC is an opportunity for students to be enthusiastic about reading, writing, authors and illustrators. Reading a variety of books builds vocabulary and knowledge, improves spelling and comprehension, can improve confidence and is also a great way to relax.

Secondary Cross Country

It was four seasons in one day at the GCC Cross-Country races this year. Our Senior School students ran in perfect sunny conditions before our Middle school students spent the afternoon running through rain and blistering wind. All races started from the Beerwah Sports Fields and continued through the surrounding bush land. The level of participation was very high and this ensured the success of the event. Several hard fought wins from our exceptional school athletes were on display as well as commendable efforts from all others who managed to finish the race.

Amongst participants this year, we have a group of talented runners that through discipline, training and determination managed to finish their races within the first 6 placings. These runners will now have the opportunity to compete in the upcoming District and Regional cross-country competitions.

Congratulations to Zion who managed to win the Secondary Cross Country Middle School and Senior School events. The convincing victory by Ararat across all Primary races tells a very different story. Tallying all points from Prep to Year 12 it was Ararat who finished as the overall winners. Congratulations Ararat!

Rugby League Development Cup

The Rugby League Development Cup is a tournament round-robin challenge between other schools in the district. This was the first year Glasshouse Christian College entered an under 12s team into the Rugby League Development Cup Challenge and the boys absolutely loved it.

After only six training sessions we had selected a team, allocated positions and entered the team into the Development Cup. Our team was shy on numbers for a full team so we recruited another four awesome players from Glasshouse State School who joined us on the day. The day was split into two parts; the first being a skills and training development session run by the NRL Coaches and the second being the tournament.

The first game that the boys played was against Elimbah State School. It was a close game up until the last minute where Elimbah scored the winning goal right at the end. Our boys only had a quick break before putting their mouth guards in once again to challenge Maleny State School. This team had a lot more experience then us on the field, however our boys worked together to hold them back and committed to some massive tackles to bring them down.

At the end of the day Daemon Cruise was awarded the Coaches NRL best and fairest award. After a smashing performance from the under 12 boys’ team we left feeling confident for another try next year.

Team – Daemon, Mitchell, Spencer, Tyler, Aaron, Jesse, Oliver, Lincoln, Beau, Nathan, Arno, Joe, Connor, Elias, Jackson.

Trish Buckley ‘All Schools’ Volleyball competition

On 18 March the first round of the Trish Buckley Volleyball tournament was held at Caloundra Indoor Centre.

This is an all-schools competition with teams entered from State and Private Schools across the Sunshine Coast district. We have two teams competing and their results were exceptional.

The year 7/8 girls coached by Calista Theron and Heidi Dart defeated Caloundra SHS 2-0 and they also defeated Mountain Creek SHS 2-0.

Our year 8 boys’ team coached by Mr Pienaar knocked up three wins by defeating Mountain Creek SHS 2-0, Burnside SHS 2-0 and Caloundra SHS 2-0. This is a fantastic start to this competition for these teams and we wish them all the best for round 2 which will not take place until the 15 April.

District Cross Country

On Wednesday 27 April, the Independent District Cross Country was held at Maroochydore Cricket Grounds. GCC took a team of 35 keen runners to represent the College.

After a sketchy morning of weather, we were very blessed to see the weather hold out for us. It turned out to be a very pleasant temperature for a cross-country run.

The competition was tough as always so we were stoked to see three of our runners make the top ten. Nichola Bates, came 10th in the Opens, Declan Martin came 9th in the Under 13s and a special mention to Bakani Kombanie who came 2nd in the Under 14s division. This was our most outstanding result from the competition.

Overall, GCC came 9th in the competition.

Well done to all students who did their best and competed at this District level.

State Championships and MVP Award for Aiden McKellar

Aiden McKellar (Year 8) recently attended the U14 Boys State Basketball Championships from 7-10 April at the NAB Stadium in Auchenflower and Brisbane Boys College, Toowong.

The opportunity to stay with his team and mix with players from all over Queensland was a fantastic experience.

Aiden represented the Sunshine Coast Phoenix Basketball Club at the championships and his team came 6th overall in their division. There were a mix of wins and losses and many intense moments of hard fought play and brilliant sportsmanship over the four days.

At the Phoenix Presentation event on Sunday 2 May, Aiden was awarded the Players’ Player (MVP) Award as voted by his team. A wonderful way to finish his first representative season of basketball.
