Saint-Gobain Adfors

SGA specializes in the manufacture and sale

of reinforcement fabrics, scrims and glass mat for

construction, engineered composites and industrial

products.

SGA combines both a weaving and a textile

transformation company, each with over 50 years

of experience, and each occupying the position of

leader and expert in their respective markets which are

advantageously complementary and global.

The following applications of SGA product can be

found in the construction sector:

– reinforcement open meshes for façade cladding and

other applications,

– multifunctional glass fibre wall coverings,

– bituminous membranes reinforcement, etc.,

– insect screening meshes,

– tapes for dry wall joints reinforcement.

SGA construction branch is constantly strengthening

its position among the worlds leading producers of

glass fiber technical fabrics. As a glass fiber mesh

producer it is considered to be the worldwide leader.

Mesh fabrics combined with specially designed

surface treatments opens the possibility of their use

in a wide range of applications. The treatment based

on styrene-butadiene assures both alkali resistance

and increased mechanical durability at the same

time, features especially required by the construction

industry. Additionally, other fabrics based on PVAc or

styrene-acrylate are also used for different applications.

Nowadays the majority of mesh fabrics for ETICS and

render reinforcement are manufactured by SG Adfors,

European branch of SGA. The quality of its products

has been assured by a quality control system according

to the latest standard ISO 9001:2000.

List of applications by types of mesh fabrics

Mesh fabrics are wound on paper tubes with inner

diameters of 45, 76 or 152 mm. The quantity of

fabric wound on the tube is determined by customer

requirements and varies from just 50 meters to the

thousands of meters needed for machine processing.

Mesh fabrics are offered in widths of between 10 cm

and 285 cm in addition to the standard 100 cm.

External thermal insulating composite systems (ETICS)

The Increasing price of energy in conjunction with

deteriorating environmental conditions are forcing us

to take serious measures, particular regard to energy

saving. ETICS are especially designed to fit exactly this

purpose, therefore they become a part of our every

day lives. They offer long lifetime with high durability to

aggressive weather conditions.

Variations of external temperature, mortar shrinkage

and movements of the insulating panels may cause

clefts or hair cracks on the surface of the system.

Therefore as an important part of certified ETICS

a glass fiber mesh is used, which thank to the special

alkali resistant surface treatment and excellent

mechanical properties insures required durability of all

ETICS.

Thanks to the high standard of quality of our mesh

fabrics, they become an integral part of many certified

ETIC systems offered on the market by major system

suppliers today. Particular certificates obtained by

Saint-Gobain Adfors are listed in the table on page

Application Procedure1. Attach plinth lath by means of Parker’s bolts.

Depth of lath profile should correspond with

thickness of insulating board.

2. Apply mortar as shown on picture.

3. Install boards tightly side by side so no glue is

allowed to pass between them.

4. Boards should be installed continuously.

5. If necessary, secure boards also by disk

dowels.

6. Example of dowels lay out.

7. All corners and edges should be reinforced

by special heavy mesh or special corner lath.

Reinforcement should be fully covered by

reinforcing coat.

8. Apply basic layer of reinforcing coat. When

coat is still soft, imprint the reinforcement mesh

gently into it. The mesh belts are imprinted from

the center outwards.

Individual belts should overlap each other as

minimum 10 cm on each side.

9. Immediately after placing the mesh apply the

upper layer of reinforcing coat.

10. The surface should be painted when dry.

11. Apply façade render.

External and internal render reinforcement

To reinforce exposed areas of external and internal

plaster (wall joints, windows and door corners and

the channels for water or gas pipes and electrical

wiring), an alkali resistant glass fibre mesh is highly

recommended by the majority of producers and

suppliers of construction technology (YTONG, ISO

SPAN etc). The recommended mass per area (1 m2) is

usually about 145 g with a mesh size of approximately

8 × 8 mm. However, other producers may use different

types of mesh like R117 and R131 with a mesh size of

around 4 × 4 mm.

Another circumstance in which mesh fabrics should

be used is when two materials with different coefficients

of expansion meet one other. In this case there is a risk

that the plaster coat will crack. In order to absorb the

tension, it is recommended that a strip of glass fibre

mesh is applied over the joint.

The mesh must be embedded in the material

avoiding creases and blisters.

Mesh type R267, R275 or R451 are specially

designed to reinforce areas exposed to increased

stress like a corner or a plinth.

Remarks:

a) Two mesh belts should overlap by 10 cm (minimum)

on each side.

b) The mesh should be placed at least 2 to 3 mm under

plaster surface.

Reinforced lightweight construction boards

Construction boards (made of polystyrene or

polyurethane) reinforced on both sides by glass fibre

mesh are successfully used in the building industry.

The boards are about 60 cm wide, up to 2.5 m long and

up to 80 mm thick and are useful wherever the straight

or difficult shapes of wall’s partition are required. They

can be used on different kinds of houses partitions,

walls of bathtubs and shower baths, swimming pools

walls, pipes covers and so on.

Besides application flexibility, they combine

lightness, easy handling and processing, shape

stability, thermal insulation and impermeability with

moisture vapors. Because of the reinforcing glass fibre

mesh attached to the boards with special adhesive, the

board’s surface forms an ideal substrate for thin-bed

tile laying or for the application of render finishes.

When used in combination with specially designed

installation hardware, builders have a very creative

building material at their disposal.

The possible uses are demonstrated in the pictures

herewith.

Mesh fabrics designed for the construction board

reinforcement should also comply with machine

processing requirements

Marble slab reinforcement

Another area in which glass fibre mesh fabric is used

is the large scale marble processing industry. When

a large marble slab is made or lower quality marble is

used, the glass fibre mesh is bonded on one side of the

slab. This process prevents marble slab damage during

manipulation and further processing.

In most cases, polyester resin is used to bond mesh

fabrics to the slab. To assure strong adhesion, mesh

fabrics with special surface treatment (marked A105)

are used. This treatment dissolves when exposed to

polyester resin ensuring good glass fibre soaking by

resin and therefore a strong and reliable connection.

Electrical floor heating mats

Electrical floor heating mats offer new, warm comfort

whenever the fancy but on touch cold floor tile are used.

This system offers floor heating without the complex

installation of heating bodies, exchangers and other

difficult-to-install systems. The advanced electronics

heating management and the relatively cheap heating

mat installation requires almost no maintenance

expense, making this an effective electrical heating

system.

Electrical heating mats take up very little space and

can therefore be installed directly over old flooring. New

installations require as little as 15 mm space including

new tiles and adhesive.

Electrical wiring is attached to glass fibre mesh belts

wide from 30 to 100 cm by self adhesive tape or by

hand eventually machine sewing.

The use of glass fibre belts with self-adhesive

coating on one side makes the installation of electrical

heating mats even easier.

2. The heating mat is unfolded on the floor. The heating mat should be laid down without any creases and then

secured so as to prevent it slipping. When laid down direction is changed, cut the glass fibre mesh belt. Be

very careful not to cut heating wire.
