The Holy Spirit came, there was a great wind, there were tongues of fire, and thou- sands came to believe and be filled. Dr. Steve Seamands recommends us to think of our life before the Spirit as life in a rowboat. The boat is propelled forward by our own strength. We row and the force of the paddles in the water move us forward. But, with the filling of the Holy Spirit, we ex- change our row boats for sail boats. The wind, a force greater than our own, moves the boat forward. Yet, some of us still row! So, this wind needs to be seen as the life giving work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus tells Nico- demus in John that we will be born of the Spirit. We will be given new life. The story in Ezekiel about the valley of dry bones reminds us that the breath or wind or Spirit (all the same word in the Hebrew) gives new life to those that are languishing. We are revived! Will we pray that we may be revived again? E. Stanley Jones says, “unless the Holy Spirit fills (us), the human spirit fails”. Pentecost Sunday will be a big day for us! My prayer is that we will allow the “wind” of the living God to come into our dry bones and give us life. Be revived, renewed, empowered, and purified! Let’s stop rowing and start sailing! Summer is here! This means vacation planning, yard work, gardening, and

yes a busy church! The church doesn’t stop being the church during sum-

mer break. There are so many opportunities to worship, serve, and experi-

ence God this summer. How will you stay connected? I will ask that you

not forget your church this summer. Traditionally, attendance is down, giv-

ing is down, and participation is down in most churches during June and

July. Don’t forget the church! Come continue to build the kingdom with

us. If you are out of town, find time for worship. You can worship with us

online or find a church where you are on vacation.

It is only fitting that we kick off summer with the Sunday of Pentecost.

Pentecost this year is June the 9th. What I have found is that many do not

fully understand this Holy Day. It is more than the one Sunday we wear

red and have red in the sanctuary. It is the birthday of the church. So, what

happened on that day of Pentecost. We see it clearly in Acts 2. The Holy

Spirit came, there was a great wind, there were tongues of fire, and thou-

sands came to believe and be filled. Dr. Steve Seamands recommends us to

think of our life before the Spirit as life in a rowboat. The boat is propelled

forward by our own strength. We row and the force of the paddles in the

water move us forward. But, with the filling of the Holy Spirit, we ex-

change our row boats for sail boats. The wind, a force greater than our

own, moves the boat forward. Yet, some of us still row! So, this wind

needs to be seen as the life giving work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus tells Nico-

demus in John that we will be born of the Spirit. We will be given new life.

The story in Ezekiel about the valley of dry bones reminds us that the

breath or wind or Spirit (all the same word in the Hebrew) gives new life to

those that are languishing. We are revived! Will we pray that we may be

revived again? E. Stanley Jones says, “unless the Holy Spirit fills (us), the

human spirit fails”.

Pentecost Sunday will be a big day for us! My prayer is that we will allow

the “wind” of the living God to come into our dry bones and give us life.

Be revived, renewed, empowered, and purified! Let’s stop rowing and start

sailing!

Daniel
