ST. DAVID’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH - WASHINGTON, DC
From the Desk of
Stuart A. Kenworthy
Dear Faithful and Friends of St David’s Church,
It was almost a year ago that Robin Dodge was called to
his parish in New Mexico and I met Stephen Sears and
Chip Nottingham to discuss becoming your interim rector.
What a joy it has been to come to know you in this most
wonderful parish church. Early on I recognized the deep
devotion so many of you held for St. David’s Church. And
one way that showed itself was your generous giving to the
life and ministries of the church. And that was in that time
of transition in which there was very little asking and
reminding about the importance of stewardship in our lives
and for the church!
I do recall writing to you about this however and sharing
with you my core belief that in all things it should for
believers be, “God first.” Once I tried to explain this to a
group of children. There was a little girl whose mother
gave her two dollars in quarters as she left for church: a
dollar for the church and the other dollar for a treat after.
As she walked to church she stumbled and the quarters
flew from her hand. Four of them rolled into a storm drain
and four lay near the curb. And with this she said, “Oh no,
I just lost the quarters my mom gave me to put in the
offering at church but I’m sure glad I still have the ones for
my treat after!”
God first or me first, which will it be? I think this is an
important question for us to ask ourselves, throughout our
lives. What does it mean to give back to God? Does God
really want from us from all that we have: And why? I
heard someone once say, “How much of all that God has
given me will I keep for myself?”
My start point is that everything we are and have is a gift
from God, the giver of all good things. But all that we have
we really do not possess unless we are willing to give. For
unless the disposition of our hearts is to give graciously
and cheerfully, and even joyfully, then we really do not
possess all that we have, those things possess us. This is
where the act of giving becomes sacramental. We are—in
the act of giving itself—drawn quietly (sometime
dramatically) into the life of God whose very nature is
total self-giving. If you need a reminder of that description
of God, take another look at the cross.
I share these thoughts with you at this time of year as we
are asked to consider in numerous ways how we will
contribute to and support the life and ministry of St.
David’s Church in the coming year. Like you, I have more
requests for contributions than I can keep track of. Many
of them are very important to urgent needs in our
community and beyond. And I do try to honor some of
them. Some years choices need to be made. It can be
difficult, yet even in that struggle I am grateful for being
able to give.
When it comes to giving to God through the life of the
church, there is no issue or struggle. There is no question.
That is because the church is not a foundation, a charity, an
institution, or just another organization. The church is the
visible, living, breathing, life and Body of Christ in the
world. Its very existence comes from the heart of God. Its
continuance is only because God’s Holy Spirit is present
and enlivening us. What a privilege and gift it is to
participate with God in the act of giving for the Gospel and
truest life of the world. There is no way to measure the
breadth and depth of all that God gives to us. It is enough,
however to always remember two words in ordering our
lives: God first.
Great thanks to Rod Hastie who beyond serving on the
vestry and overseeing the eventual building of a
columbarium at St. David’s, is leading in this important
season of stewardship.
God bless you all.
Faithfully,
The Rev. Stuart A. Kenworthy
Interim Rector

WARDENS’ REPORT
Dear Fellow St. David’s Parishioners:
With the developments happening at our church and major, unforeseen events outside of church, there is much to report since September’s issue of Glad Tidings.
On September 10, we had a festive and warm and welcoming Homecoming. The service itself was well at-tended, and over 20 children signed up for our Sunday School. Several parishioners helped underwrite the ca-tering Rocklands Barbecue & Grilling Company, the tent and the attractive signage that lined some nearby streets. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a special day.
On September 13, we officially called the Reverend Kristen Hawley to be the fifth Rector of St. David’s. As mentioned in our email to the parish and notice on our website, Rev Hawley is currently the Assistant Rector at Christ Church Georgetown. The Vestry voted for her unanimously, and we are so pleased to welcome Kristen – along with her husband, RJ and their children Maggie, Will, Alec and Clare – to our community. The Haw-leys first official day with us is November 27.
Throughout the past month, new committees have been forming and capital campaign projects have pressed on. Fellow vestry member Rod Hastie announced the formation of a Columbarium Committee recently, and a new Hospitality Committee is being established to help capitalize on the momentum we have experienced with the newly enhanced outdoor coffee hour. An engineering consulting firm conducted an analysis on our water management issues, and they have confirmed that despite the flooding, the church building is sound. Addition-ally, the drama den and the vestments room will soon be refurbished to make way for Rev. Hawley’s new of-fice.
With activity picking up, we want to encourage everyone to read Reverend Kenworthy’s remarks about stew-ardship and the symbol it represents. Any pledge you make will further the work of this place and the mission of the church, and we urge you to consider fulfilling your 2017 pledge soon as well as making a commitment for 2018. Additionally, more information on stewardship will be sent to you shortly.
While this news for us is all good and encouraging, we cannot help but think about the recent hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico and the senseless mass shooting in Las Vegas. One wonders what our counter-parts had planned for their Homecoming Sundays at local episcopal churches, such as Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Houston, TX, the Catedrale la Diocesis de Puerto Rico Iglesia Episcopal in San Juan, PR and Christ Church in Las Vegas, NV. One also wonders, how the parishes and communities have altered their plans since major events took hold in recent weeks.
As we continue to prepare for the busy fall season, it is an opportune time to rededicate ourselves to our shared mission and reflect on our shared blessings. And given the events of late, now seems like an opportune time for us to be mindful of the needs of others, whether it is family member or neighbor who lives close by or a victim of a disaster half a world away.
We look forward to seeing you soon, and do not hesitate to contact us with suggestions, comments or concerns.
Faithfully yours,
Stephen Sears Chip Nottingham
Senior Warden Junior Warden

SAVE THE DATES:
Please save two important dates in November for special events at
St. David’s:
Sunday November 19, 2017, 11:15 AM – 12:45 PM: Farewell and Thank You Recep-tion in honor of Interim Rector the Reverend Stuart A. Kenworthy and Fran
Kenworthy.
Sunday December 3, 2017, 11:15 AM – 12:45 PM: Welcome reception and celebra-tion of Advent in honor of the Reverend Kristen L. Hawley and family.
BISHOP WALKER SCHOOL SUPPLIES
This past summer, St. David’s funded approximately $1000 in school supplies for grades one through three at the Bishop Walker School. This private day school is a project of the Diocese of Washington and an Outreach ministry of St. David’s. Through the generosity of the congre-gation, copier paper, crayons, pencil boxes, construction paper and many other materials are purchased every year. In a special church event, the pencil boxes are filled with the materials the boys will need for the school year. With the teaching supplies, the pencil boxes are deliv-ered to the school. The Outreach Committee thanks the congregation for their financial sup-port of this effort, Margaret Johnson for facilitating the event, and the Piercy family for deliv-ering the supplies.
SANDWICH MAKING ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22
How is it possible to make 1000 sandwiches in one hour? St. David’s has the answer!
For six years, we as a community have come together in the undercroft, for loaves and fishes moments. In the company of fellow parishioners, we have experienced great pleasure making and bagging this staggering number of turkey and cheese sandwiches for Martha’s Table. If you have participated you know what a good feeling this accomplishment generates.
So, mark your calendars for October 22, immediately following the 10 am service, and pre-pare to roll up your sleeves for this wonderful St. David’s tradition. It can’t happen without YOU!

St. David’s Scholarship Students
A project of Art for Humanity, the nonprofit founded by the Rev. Glen Evans, is the Honduras Independence Bilingual School (HIBS). It is a private elementary school in Quimistan, Honduras, a town in the Sula Valley, the poorest part of the country. This area was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998 in much the same way that we have seen hurricanes destroy whole Caribbean islands this month. In addition to scholarship support, the school has received funding for the renovation and expansion of its physical plant, directly and indirectly through St. David’s.
The children at HIBS are all on some form of scholarship assistance. The students supported by St. David’s are from the poorest families and receive the most aid. Colonialism has left the poor in Honduras believing that they may not even speak to the wealthy. Public schooling, if children have the shoes and clothing to at-tend, does not provide the English language instruction that is critical for their future success. Art for Humani-ty, through its many projects, attempts to break this cycle of poverty by providing something as simple as shoes and as complex as a college education. Another project of Art for Humanity is a completely self-sustaining college for women.
The four students funded by St. David’s congregation are: Veronica, Genesis, Lesley, and Jacob. The three girls have received full scholarship aid for a number of years. Last year, the generous response to our fundrais-ing made it possible to add Jacob. Jacob’s siblings attend HIBS through the support of individual members of St. David’s, as do three other children. This brings the total number of children provided with scholarship aid through St. David’s, to nine. Veronica is in fifth grade, Genesis is in fourth grade, Lesley is in third, and Jacob is in Kindergarten. Veronica is creative and artistic. She is a strong student academically and dreams of using her gymnastics skills to realize her dream of becoming a ballet dancer. Genesis is talented in art and a gifted painter. She is an average student whose favorite class is Spanish. Lesley struggles with academics, but works hard, receiving after school tutoring three days a week. Her favorite class is Art and she too shows talent for dance. Jacob is an excellent student whose favorite classes are English and Computer. His special talent is singing.
The cost of sending a child to HIBS for one year is $1,250. The Outreach Committee hopes that this year we will again raise the $5,000 needed to fund all four children. Please consider making a contribution during Oc-tober so that the funds can be sent well before the start of the new school year. Head of School, Vivian Claros tells us that the cost of uniforms and other supplies increases, and their availability shrinks, as the start of a new school year approaches. Checks should be made out to St. David’s with HIBS in the memo line.
More information about Art for Humanity is available at www.artforhumanity.org. HIBS is one of five major Outreach ministries at St. David’s. The others are Project RETRAK, Martha’s Table, Friendship Place, and the Bishop Walker School.
