Trends in technology change every year. The Internet of Things is arguably the hottest topic in technology right now. Understanding this and other technology trends will benefit both yourself and your customers.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure.

IoT – The Casual Programmer

It is becoming too burdensome for many connected product and service companies to deliver software that can anticipate use cases and integration points of thousands of new connected products coming to market.

A shift is underway where the command and control of this complex connected world around us will rely on “casual programming” experiences — giving every day, non-programming people the tools, services, and APIs usually reserved for the hackers and technology elite in friendly and accessible forms.


IoT – The Smart Home

Smart Home tech has been around for years but is just now starting to take off because previously everything needed to be hard wired.

Internet speeds to the home have continued to grow (Comcast now has 505 Mbps / Google Fiber 1 Gbps) and Wireless in the home keeps getting faster (Wireless-N up to 450 Mbps, Wireless-AC up to 1.3 Gbps).

Pretty cool products are becoming available.



Smart Thermostats - Connect via Wi-Fi, control from anywhere and can be controlled by apps. Honeywell Nest Thermostat – The Nest programs itself. As you adjust the

temperature, arrive and leave home, the Nest learns and begins to self adjust.



Nest Smoke and CO Detector Heads up warning before full blown alarm. Silence Alarms with a wave of your hand. Human voice tells you where alarms is

coming from. Alerts on your devices such as phone or tablet. Carbon Monoxide Detection. Works with Nest Thermostat to do stuff like turn off furnace if

a CO alert is triggered. Pathlight – If enabled can illuminate your path in the dark by

turning on and off as you pass.

How do you view your cameras? Depends on what you buy. DropCam has their own app. FoscamPro is a great app for Foscam. There are other IP Camera viewing apps

available.

Can you save the video feeds? Yes but the solutions vary. Foscam can detect motion and send screen

caps to a specified folder on your network. DropCam has cloud storage for saving. Lots of other products such as Security

Monitor Pro and many many more.

Aging – Using technology with aging Baby Boomers Devices such as scales, glucose monitors and blood pressure

monitors which interface to your phone using Bluetooth. Devices that can track

activity levels and can sendalerts based on changes.

Remote Monitoring The combination of internet,

video, and wireless technology has allowed for an explosion of patient monitoring capabilities.

Officially named “Ultra High Definition (UHD)” With the arrival of 4K there are four main resolution

standards for use in the home: standard definition (480p/540p) , high definition (720p), full high definition (1080p) and ultra high definition (2160p).

UHD is an "umbrella term" that encompasses higher resolutions (more pixels) than HDTV, as well as more realistic color and higher frame rates.

So should you buy a 4K TV? "There was a huge, noticeable leap from standard

definition to HD, but the difference between 1080p and 4K is not as marked," said researcher Dave Lamb of 3M Laboratories. He added that "4K is at the point of diminishing returns," but said there could be some benefits for screens over 55 inches.


IoT – 4K

4K TVs will up convert. 4K content in the home starts with streaming.

Netflix and Amazon both offer 4K streaming. New cable boxes support 4K (DirecTV Genie) 4K Blu-ray planned for end of 2015. If you are wanting the best picture available right

now, 4K TVs look the best. However, don’t expect to really use 4K that often yet (remember the launch of HD?)


IoT – Curved TVs

In 2013, Samsung showed off the first 4K Curved TV. In 2014, almost every manufacturer had one. In 2015, Samsung showed off a bendable 105” TV

that can go from flatto curved via remote.

Touted as a more immersive experiencewith a wider viewing angle.

Curved TVs are not right for every setup.


IoT – Digital Media Devices

A Digital Media Device provides access to the wide variety of online and in home digital media on your TV. Think streaming Netflix, Amazon Movies, Hulu, etc.

This is a growing market and exciting changes are taking place.

Roku One of the original devices. Established and affordable. Higher end models are supposed

to be much faster than older models but I have not tested.



Apple TV If you own Apple Products, this is the

device to get. Airplay allows you to stream virtually

anything. Waiting on next version (this summer…?)

Google Chrome Cast Most affordable ($35). Works with Android phones

and Google Chrome. Google Cast



Google Nexus Player Google Cast Voice Search on Remote. Game Controller for Games.



Amazon Fire TV Android Based with supports for lots of apps. Voice Search on Remote. Amazon Free Time parental controls. Can buy a Game Controller for Games. Can mirror Kindle Fire, even use as a second screen!

IoT – Cutting the Cord

Dropping traditional cable for online streaming is gaining popularity.

Sports is still the biggest draw to traditional outlets. Both sides are scrambling to keep or gain customers. Apple’s rumored streaming TV service coming soon.

IoT – Mobile Payments

Mobile payments are gaining traction ApplePay is a key factor driving this traction. There is still a lot of uncertainty in this market. NFC and Apple Pay was disabled on terminals in

many stores last year because of the Walmart led Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX). Includes Walmart, CVS, Dunkin Donuts, Kohl’s, and lots more. Target did not disable their terminals Other’s are starting to break rank (Best Buy)

The reason is because ApplePay does not include customer information with payments.


IoT – Mobile Payments

Another trend is many stores are creating their own payment apps.

Nearly 15% of Starbucks customers already pay with their phones.

60% of consumers use their smartphones to pay because of loyalty benefits.

Why am I listing Toy Robots in this presentation? Because they are exploding and kids are aware!

Kids love robots and they are no longer the plain and simple things from our youth.

With the explosion of the Internet of Things, Privacy should be a top priority.

With companies collecting more and more data just how secure is our information? Think recent data hacks of Target and Home Depot

Secure Messaging - ever since a series of high-profile hacks in 2014 laid bare the private lives of several celebrities, there has been massive interest in messaging (voice, text, photo, and video) that is meant to be fundamentally secure from snooping.

A new set of products emerged to take up this challenge, including everything from personal data vaults, to secure encrypted calls, to video chats. Expect to see even more platforms that make it easier for you to live anonymously online.

Your email account should have the most secure password! Make your password is at least 8 characters long. Never share your password with anyone. Make your passwords more complex by using lower and upper

case letters, numbers and special characters. When changing a password make your new password

significantly different from your previous password. Consider using a pass phrase to construct your password. For example, use the first letter of each word from a phrase

like “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” T$tG@iG$ Do not use the same password for work that you use on

Facebook or other websites.

A password manager is a software application that helps a user store and organize passwords. Password managers usually store passwords encrypted, requiring the user to create a master password; a single, ideally very strong password which grants the user access to their entire password database.

Tech Trends – Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality means an Internet that enables and protects free speech. It means that Internet service providers should provide us with open networks — and should not block or discriminate against any applications or content that ride over those networks. Just as your phone company shouldn't decide who you can call and what you say on that call, your ISP shouldn't be concerned with the content you view or post online.

Without Net Neutrality, cable and phone companies could carve the Internet into fast and slow lanes. An ISP could slow down its competitors' content or block political opinions it disagreed with. ISPs could charge extra fees to the few content companies that could afford to pay for preferential treatment — relegating everyone else to a slower tier of service. This would destroy the open Internet.
