In this issue, we bring you all things color. From the wonder of white to bedazzled bedrooms, there are
design ideas for luxurious interiors. We off er insights on the psychology of color. Even colorful characters are part of the discussion.
When the photos were taken for our feature home, snow covered much of the state. But winter weather didn’t stop builder Brent Wimpee from delivering a beautifully reimagined fl oor plan for this Butler County client.
Homeowner John Martin helped source and specify many of the design elements. Th e Martin family has deep ties to the area and the surrounding community of Woodbury has a rich history. During the Civil War, one native son was even an international spy; if not a great one.
It seems Captain Th omas Henry Hines went in search of sympathizers. If he couldn’t fi nd northern comrades willing to join the south, he was content to stir up trouble in remote outposts. Hines and his crew were accused of stealing, pillaging, and derailing trains but their exploits were most often foiled. When Captain Hines found himself a fugitive in Canada, he studied law to pass the time.
After the War, President Johnson off ered amnesty to all but high-ranking offi cers of the Confederacy whereupon, Captain Hines swore allegiance, embraced the cause and before he died in 1898, had established a thriving law practice in Bowling Green and served two terms as the Chief Justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
And what does any of this story have to do with color?
Well, just like the colorful characters from earlier times, color palettes must

Which is probably why every December, designers at Pantone, the “global authorities on color,” issue a new hue to serve as color’s annual ambassador. For 2018, they launched 18-3838, which they’ve christened Ultra-Violet. Used in teenaged bedrooms throughout the sixties to help those fuzzy black light posters come to life, 18-3838 is meant to suggest the mysteries of the cosmos.
From black lights to blocking the sun—the Society for Lifelong Learning brings us a profi le on Chicxulub—the impact crater left by a huge asteroid believed to have brought the age of the dinosaur to an abrupt end. WKU Professor Ken Kuehn takes us along for a scientifi c inquiry into Earth’s mysteries.
From fashion to furniture to fl oral arrangements, to asteroids fl ying through space, clearly ultra violet is a force to be reckoned with.
So get with the trend. Incorporate 18-3838 into your wardrobe, your home, and your landscape. Buy the nail polish, the throw pillows, the t-shirt. It looks good on you anyway and just like spring, it’s time to burst into color.

TIM, We are considering a master bath
remodel and we are not sure what
type of tub to consider. Would
you give us your thoughts on a
freestanding tub?
A design trend that some may fi nd surprising is whether to have a tub in the master bath at all. Many are removing the tub, opting instead for a luxurious walk in shower. While some consider a bathtub to be outdated or unnecessary in a bathroom, for others, nothing can replace the feeling of a soothing soak in a warm spacious tub. If a bath is your idea of the ultimate in relaxation, then perhaps you should consider a freestanding tub in your next renovation. It is easy to see why freestanding tubs have become such popular choices in bathrooms recently. Available in a range of size, shapes, and styles, these tubs are far more than functional. Th ey change the tone of a bathroom by turning it into a relaxing sanctuary, and as a clear focal point in any bathroom they greatly impact the style of the room. Freestanding tub styles frequently conjure images of very large bathrooms, but they can be positioned almost anywhere in the room and are available in a range of sizes making them an option for many more bathrooms than one might anticipate. If a freestanding tub is the right choice for you, here are some tips to help with your bathroom design.
Where will it go?
Keeping the toilet as far away from the tub as possible — ideally in its own room — makes the tub more inviting. Th e relationship between the tub and windows is important in terms of seeing and being seen — or not. It is also wise to think about what you see from the tub; the room looks very diff erent from a lower vantage point. Although storage is often overlooked, a place within arm’s

reach of the tub for soap, shampoo, towels, and other commonly used bath items makes a big diff erence. Finally, it’s a good idea to make sure that the fl oor joists under the tub are up to the task of supporting the tub and 500 lb. of water.
What size?
Tub length is best determined by having the bather try out diff erent tubs. A 6-ft. tub might sound more desirable than a 5-ft. one, but too big can be uncomfortable for smaller people.
What type of tub?
Now, for the fun part! Freestanding tubs range from streamlined contemporary styles to old world charm. Th ey are available in myriad materials, from enameled cast iron to stone, composites, wood, and copper. While cast iron is both durable and traditional, it’s very heavy and tends to be costly. Acrylic and fi berglass are popular for their light weight and lower cost. Metal tubs maintain water temperature for longer, but they require more maintenance. Some tubs are even available with wood plinths or pedestals, which can be scribed to fi t a tub to uneven fl ooring.Lastly, whether you choose a composite tub or a cast iron classic, its important to choose a professional builder for your bathroom project. A professional builder or remodeler will ensure your project is properly built and painstakingly installed, thus giving you and your family many years of enjoyment to come.

TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADERWhen earthlings imagine UFOs they don’t think of space dust, they think of little green men. But the truth is, Earth is con-stantly bombarded with extraterrestrial objects in the form of tons of minute particles no larger than a grain of sand. Th ese ‘micrometeorites’ are not dangerous. Th ey vanish into rain gut-ters or get swept up with the vacuum and life goes on.
Larger space rocks are also fairly common. Up to about three feet they are called ‘meteoroids’ when they are fl ying through outer space. And larger than three feet, they are called ‘asteroids.’ When they reach Earth’s atmosphere and begin to glow,

we refer to them collectively as mete-ors, or shooting stars. Meteorites are the solid remains of these alien objects and are highly prized by scientists and collectors.
METEOR POWERAbout once a year, an asteroid the size of an automobile will reach Earth's atmosphere where it becomes a brilliant fi reball and is completely consumed before reaching the ground. Asteroids up to about 75 feet in diameter will usually disintegrate causing little damage even though many smaller fragments will strike the surface. However, the shock wave cre-ated by larger objects can do consider-able damage. In 2013, the Chelyabinsk meteor fl ew in over Russia at around 40 thousand miles per hour. Estimated to be about 60 feet in diameter, it exploded in fl ight with energy equal to 15 times that of the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Th e Chelyabinsk meteor caused an estimated 1,500 injuries and damaged more than 7,000 buildings.
HISTORICAL RECORDFortunately, these large meteorites are rare. Once every few thousand years, an asteroid the size of a football fi eld crashes into Earth causing signifi cant damage. Th ink of Meteor Crater in Ari-zona, where about 50,000 years ago, an asteroid estimated to be 160-feet wide blasted a 3,900-foot long by 560-foot deep hole into the desert landscape. It is the best-preserved impact crater on Earth. Only once every few million years, does an object large enough to potentially threaten civilization come along. And perhaps on the order of once every 100 million years, the unthinkable catastrophe occurs, one

that is capable of causing a radical shift in the course of Earth history.
SCIENTIFIC INQUIRYAsk any science class today how the dinosaurs became extinct and they will cite the giant asteroid that struck Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula some 65 million years ago bringing an abrupt end to the Cretaceous Period. But how do we know this really happened? What is the evidence? Could a single asteroid really change the fate of the entire planet?
Enter a young scientist named Walter Alvarez who in the 1970s, along with his father Luis (a Nobel Prize win-ner in physics), and other colleagues from Berkeley, began to study the sedi-ment around Gubbio, Italy. Unearth-ing an unusual layer of clay, less than one-inch thick, launched them on a 20-year adventure in scientifi c discov-ery. His book T. rex and the Crater of
Doom tells that story from a personal perspective and off ers a very readable chronicle of their eff orts to develop the asteroid-impact theory of dinosaur extinction.
A MIND BLOWING SCENARIOAlvarez describes what he calls, “…one very bad day in the history of Earth,” and challenges readers to imagine an asteroid higher than Mount Ever-est and six miles in diameter (nearly large enough to cover the entire city of Bowling Green). Th en imagine the huge mountain of rock slam-ming into Earth at 60,000 miles per hour. Th e shock wave (which is like a sonic boom deep inside the rock) would have instantly vaporized the asteroid. Th e explosion would have released the energy equivalent of 100 million megatons of TNT (mega is
the prefi x for ‘million’) and blasted a hole 25-miles deep which would then quickly collapse and broaden to create a wide crater.
BOOM CHICKA BOOMToday that structure is called the Chicxulub Crater and is about 110-miles wide, making it one of the largest on Earth. For comparison, an 8-point magnitude earthquake releases about 15 megatons of energy and the largest nuclear bomb test ever conducted released the equivalent of 50 megatons. Th e energy released

instantaneously by this killer asteroid of the Cretaceous Period would have been 10,000 times greater than that of the world’s entire nuclear arsenal.
Th e rapid succession of events during and shortly after the asteroid impact not only brought about the demise of the dinosaurs and other reptiles it also doomed 75 percent of all living species on Earth at the time. Scientists had known of the Cretaceous extinction for many decades and explanations such as an atmosphere poisoned by volcanic activity, or pandemic disease, or climate change had been advanced to explain it. Th ough each of these mechanisms is indeed capable of causing global catas-trophe, today, the asteroid impact at Chicxulub is the accepted cause.
Given the long, 4.6-billion-year history of our planet, mass extinction by asteroid raises some signifi cant questions. Has our planet primarily been shaped by slow acting, gradual changes or have global events of short duration held sway over its development? Given our current knowledge of the latter, shouldn’t scien-tists be scanning the skies for asteroids with earth-crossing orbits and develop-ing methods to avert a collision?
LITTLE GREEN MEN OR GREAT BIG ROCKSPerhaps we humans should turn our attention away from the remote possibil-ity of encountering sentient space aliens and intelligently-designed UFOs, and toward those threats from outer space whose history is already known and whose potential impacts we are already well aware of. e future of civilization and perhaps even of our planet could depend on it!
An exploration of Alvarez’s work—enti-tled ‘T. rex and the Crater of Doom’ will be off ered by the Society for Lifelong Learn-ing during its Spring 2018 semester.

Landscape Color for Spring
Planting Color in the Landscape
GREENWhen March arrives, lawn care experts are busy helping clients keep the grass happy by applying pre-emergent herbicides in just the right proportions. Th eir words of caution to the weekend lawn warrior: Don’t over apply herbicides! Read the Directions. Th en follow them.
Another helpful hint: Timing is everything! Th ey’re called “pre-emergent” for a reason. You have to kill the weeds before they’ve had a chance to get established or the pre-emergent
WHITELandscaping with white pays dividends. Even the moonlight loves white. And it’s a wonderful way to showcase the colors around it.
Azaleas fl ower in white but also pale pink and even red—which often waits for warmer weather to show off . Whatever the hue; blooms of spring color from this acid-loving bush are a staple in a southern landscape.
Another native plant, the dogwood, has a long history in Kentucky. And in the 1960’s, before she became Kentucky’s fi rst female mayor, Dolly McNutt decided that her city, Paducah, should celebrate that history. She helped launch the Dogwood Trail. Th e “trail” began as two city blocks of dogwoods decorated in lights and celebrated for their beauty and the state’s heritage.
Spring of 2018 will mark the 54th annual event and that two block “trail” has become twelve miles long. So, watch the weather, and plan a trip sometime late in March or early in April when Paducah’s Dogwood Trail bursts into bloom.
herbicides won’t do anything. If the weeds are still dormant, you’re
golden. But if not, you’re looking at an entirely diff erent scenario. Th ere are post-emergent herbicides available, so if the weeds have already sprouted, don’t waste time or money on a pre-emergent.
If you do have to use a post-emergent herbicide, read the label. Some of them target specifi c weeds, and others are non-selective. Non-selective post-emergent herbicides will target lawns, fl owers, and anything green.

Go ahead and play with color, because color is playing with you.
color
Never underestimate the power of color.
Th anks to rods and cones swirl-ing through the retina, and via a fast track from the eye to the autonomic nervous system, humans have an invol-untary response to color.
Your pulse quickens at the sight of red lights in the rearview mirror not just because they’re fl ashing. It’s also because the body knows that red means fi ght or fl ight. Blood is red. Fire is red. Red in the morning is the sailor’s warning.
Blue has the opposite eff ect. Blue skies, ocean views, and blue-plate specials inspire humans to mellow out and con-template life in the slow lane.
Green is the mediator. Green is Sprite. Green says it’s ok to drink this sugary soda because there’s no caff eine.

which the human eye responds—red, blue and green—have found their way into every aspect of design.
Th ere is a place for every color and a color all over the place.
Th ere is even an ‘ugliest” color:Pantone 448 C, also called "opaque cou-
ché," has been selected to disgust people. A cross between mud and mold, this lowly hue has an important role in the market-place. After extensive research, opaque couche was selected as the background color for those public service warning labels about the hazards of smoking cigarettes.
Th e psychology of color is something that people take very seriously.
Colorcom's "Global Color Database" has compiled responses from 120 thousand people worldwide. Th e survey asks ques-tions about color. Which color is depend-able? Which color do people associate with happiness? Which color is powerful? Which is sexy? Which is the color of bad luck?
Corporate clients use that informa-tion for all types of decisions. When Apple computer famously added color to their monitors, the company restored its footing in the global marketplace. Heinz determined that kids liked green and introduced green ketchup. Th e result: Sales shot up. But when blue French fries were introduced, they sat on the shelves.
And while blue French-fries may be down, they may not be out of the question.
Color expert Jill Morton explains that, “Color is constantly changing.” She says every twenty years or so, tastes and color associations can even reverse completely. Orange for example, used to be associated with “value” but in today’s marketplace high-end manufacturers are rediscovering the power of orange on everything from luxury vehicles to leather jackets.
Interior decorator Vickey Grimsley is also fascinated by the psychology of color. In her work, she likes to, “…help people put color into their world.”

With corporate clients, Grimsley will generally rely on the tried and true. For example, a deep shade of green is an ideal color for a boardroom because of its role as a mediator. Remember; green is the trusted balance between red and blue. Green signals growth and activity, but it also embodies a sense of calm and a careful approach.
In residential design, Grimsley says build a foundation fi rst. Spend money on the elements that create the struc-ture and save the color trends for wall paint, window treatments, bedding and accessories.
Her explanation is that trending colors will come and go in seven to ten-year forecasts because each industry has a unique time frame in terms of intro-ducing their products and recouping a return on investment.
People won’t buy something if they don’t like the color.
Wallpaper for example has to be designed, manufactured, and printed into catalogs before it can be distributed to retailers. Th e process means it can take up to two years for the new wallpa-per options to hit the marketplace.
And what about other products like cars and computers and ketchup? Grimsley says each product has diff er-ent parameters when it comes to new colors. She says that by the time a new color is incorporated into plastic and sold at big-box retailers, it really isn’t trendy anymore. “By the time a color hits plastics or Walmart,” she says, “it’s going out of style.”
Of course, a home is most people’s big-gest investment, so whether it’s a custom project, a remodel, or even wall paint, the color palette should improve the home’s value.
When selecting big-ticket architec-tural elements, the important thing to remember is to go from the ground up, and the outside in. Consider the color of the exterior elements fi rst—brick, stone, siding, shutters—build from one hue to the next. Inside the house, start with the fl ooring and move to the molding, the cabinets, the countertops, the tile work and the appliances.
Only then is it time to throw in a favor-ite color pink or powder blue.

When John Martin wanted to update this 30-year

“must haves.”
Th ese “must haves” had as much to do with the family

Much of the furniture was either collected by or con-

any costly overruns.
Working together they added 2,500 square
feet of living space upstairs, fi nished the
basement downstairs to include a home
offi ce and a theatre room, and added a
large two-car garage with extra storage.
Th e new fl oor plan includes a master suite,
a homework study, open-concept commu-
nal spaces, a brand new gourmet kitchen
and a dine-in combination sitting room
and sun porch. With all the changes, the
home is now much more functional and
family friendly.

The furnishings and fi nishes contrast contemporary against classic lines. Throw backs to an earlierera include the ladder back chairs with woven seats used at the desks and in the dining room. The addition of a master suite allowed an existing bedroom to be transformed into a “homework” offi ce.

One of the home’s best features is the addition of a large, comfortable master suite. The space is cool and collected. It features a large bedroom and a walk in closet.
A master bath with a glass front, dual head shower is tucked behind a pocket door and plays off the clean lines of an upscale hotel.

Th e fi rst consideration in any remodel is
always what needs to be changed and the
accompanying consideration is the budget.
For every change, from the circulation to
the ceiling fans, there must be a decision.
And each of those decisions comes with
a price tag.
Should countertops be granite, quartz,
or painted wood?
How many windows do we want? Should
we keep the fi replace, or replace it? Floor-
ing, wall paint, trim, appliances, fi xtures,
faucets, and square footage are all up for
negotiation.
As Wimpee points out, the choices can
be almost unlimited so budgeting is para-
mount. Th e fl ooring for example is one of
about 40 decisions that need to be made.
Had the builder’s estimates been off by as
little as a dollar a square foot, it would have
changed this project for better or worse a
total of 2,500 dollars.
When it comes to remodeling, Wimpee
considers himself both student and guide.
Encouraging his clients to share ideas on
things like lighting, tile, and fl ooring, makes
him better able to evaluate their taste. Th at
helps him guide the decision making pro-
cess to give them what they want at the
best possible price.
In the master bath for example, after he
realized that the home was going from tra-
ditional to a more contemporary expression,
the builder encouraged Martin to reconsider
the idea of using only cobalt blue subway
tiles to fi nish the large glass-front shower.
Instead they fi nished the space with an
accent band of the blue. Th e cost savings
were substantial and the fi nished design
actually better showcases the cobalt blue
tiles by making them pop against the white.
“Th is guy is a genius,” Martin says of his
builder.
Wimpee isn’t sure he fi ts the “genius”
category, but he is pleased with the fi nished
project. He credits Martin with knowing
exactly how to shop for this sleeker, more
modern palette.
Some of the costs are fairly straightfor-
ward. Heating and cooling for example,
Allowing his daughters to select the color and decorative palette helped include them in the project. From Paris to Paradise, the newly painted bedrooms share a jack and jill bath thanks to the creative repurposing of what was once a closet. Here, like the rest of the home, hardwood fl oors and custom trim get the same bounce from blue hues that make things pop with contrast.
30 • MARCH 2018 BG HOME & LIFESTYLE • WWW.BGDAILYNEWS.COM
are based on the square footage, and not
necessarily the unit. But in this case, a base-
ment below the new master suite prompted
Wimpee to specify European style ductless,
wall-mounted units. Th ey are just as effi -
cient as conventional units, with a much
better up-front cost.
Whether building or remodeling, any cus-
tom project means a lot of moving parts
and the contractor’s job is to explain the
process, mitigate unforeseen circumstances,
and respect the fact that the family home
represents the largest investment most
people make.
Outgrowing a space, a changing family
makeup, or just looking to upgrade—the
remodel is always a collaborative eff ort not
only between owner and builder but also
between the past and the future. And in
the case of the Martin family, they love the
new design and they plan to call Woodbury
home for generations to come.
Just in time for the Super Bowl Sunday, the homeowner is busy assembling and installing a big screen television in the basement theatre room. In its early incarnation, the basement was the place where Martin’s uncle who owned the home previously, would tinker with his projects which included a passion for all things aeronautical.
No matter the season, bringing the outside in is an essential new element of the home’s design. This covered porch offers easy access to and from the great room and the breakfast kitchen and extends the home’s footprint into the natural world.

Timber ~ The walls came down both inside and out at this Butler County home that was built in 1991. Contractor Brent Wimpee of Southern Kentucky Building and Remodeling, completely removed the carport to make space for an entire new wing. Now, a large two-car garage leads to the fi nished basement and upstairs into the house so no more trudging up the stone path to get groceries inside. Above the footprint of the new garage area, there is a large, comfortable master suite. The home is surrounded by mature trees thanks to its location along a 55-acre nature preserve.
Change of seasons and a change of scenery—the carport made way for an entire wing complete with garage, fi nished basement and upstairs master suite.

Rooms that have a lot of natural light will give off a warm tone so balancing with cooler shades of white can be helpful. White paint comes in hundreds of shades so be mindful of furniture and accessories you incorporate. Bring nature's warmth to your room by adding plants, wood accents and personal mementos.

Luscious layers upon layers of mix and match whites and creams are beautiful when created by a combination of paint, furniture, pillows,
art, bedding, molding and rugs—the more the better!
There's one room style that takes my breath away — an all-
white interior room. While in theory, a bleached-out space
could be stark and cold, the visual reality tells a very diff er-
ent design story. A milky-hued foundation is the perfect blank
canvas for developing a timeless space that remains relevant
regardless the country, design era or year. White is forever.
When decorating a white interior, one thing to remember —
texture is your friend, adding visual interest and warmth. Incor-
porating elements such as wool, wood, silk, cotton, brick, tile,
marble or wood will create an inviting space, no matter the room
size. Adding anything natural from the Earth, such as wood,
stones or plants, will add warmth, regardless of the color. Weath-
ered vintage-type additions to the room such as sheepskins,
cowhides, blankets or textiles add character and a warm sense
of purposeful layering. Sprinkle in sentimental objects from
a vacation, or fi ll open shelving with your favorite books or
personal mementos to add additional depth and warmth to
the area.

Bring the fl avors of New Orleans home
T he distractions of the holidays
and football are over. Th at means
we have weekends back again
making time for long, lazy Sun-
day lunches. No more nachos or chips
and dips, hot dogs and beer in front of
the TV. I am talking a proper Sunday
lunch, not to be confused with brunch.
It’s winter, so bring on a nice meaty
roast, a big chewy red wine, chocolate
in any form and perhaps a brandy with
coff ee in front of the fi re. Good friends
and conversation will ensue. A lingering,
comfortable afternoon, no pretenses
and I cook. Everyone else cleans; house
rules, simple.
Th at’s how I embrace winter, along
with long walks with my dog and inside
projects. Winter is for warm meals and
crackling fi res. For a successful sit-
down luncheon, invite no more than six
people. Time tested, this is the perfect
arrangement to have one conversation
at a time plus the added benefi t of really
engaging with your guests.
Th is winter we’re spicing it up by
bringing jazzy New Orleans food to
our table for a Mardi Gras luncheon.
According to the food world, January
and February are both “R” months, an
old adage claiming oysters should only
be consumed during those months.
Translation—oysters are at their fi nest

baked crispy Parmesan bread crumble
and garlic butter. Because nothing

enjoy decadent, warm bread pudding
topped with a silky, bourbon sauce.
Gumbo is a dish made with love and
patience. For me it’s all about the roux,
known in Louisiana as “Cajun Napalm”.
Th is slow cooked mixture of fl our and oil
holds its heat (hence the term napalm)
and is the fl avor behind a good gumbo.
Slowly cooked to a deep brown this roux
thickens the gumbo and brings a distinct
fl avor to the dish. Crisscrossing Loui-
siana you will fi nd there are numerous
gumbos and many ways to make them.
Consequently, there are debates about
what constitutes a gumbo. Is it the roux,
the addition of okra or fi lé powder? Th en
there’s the tomato debate. I have been
told, to my face, by an old coon-dog from
the deep bayou, “Add tomatoes and it is
a stew not gumbo”.
Regardless, passions run high, toma-
toes or not. My version contains a dark
roux; okra and fi lé, just to defy them
all. I might even add a small amount
of tomatoes to my seafood gumbo.
Another debate about gumbo is that
some resemble consommé, thin, clear
and dark. Others are thick and meaty.
With those two extremes, most fall in the
middle like the one I make with andou-
ille sausage and shrimp. It’s best made
a day ahead of time and add the shrimp
the day you serve it. Serve with rice and
it becomes a satisfying meal, perfect for
entertaining.

ROUX:
INGREDIENTS:
¾ cup vegetable oil
1 cup all purpose fl our
1 cup onion medium dice
1 cup green peppers medium dice
1 cup celery medium dice
½ cup chopped okra (fresh or frozen)
2 cloves garlic minced
3 bay leaves
½ teaspoon thyme
1 tablespoon fi lé powder mixed with water into a smooth liquidly paste
1 pound Andouille sausage sliced
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 cup green onions chopped (for garnish)
Louisiana hot sauce to taste
METHOD:In a heavy 6-quart pot heat the oil. Add the fl our, whisking until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently. The roux will start to brown and seize up. Continue to stir. As it browns further the roux will loosen up. Stir until it is a deep brown, but not burnt. At this point add the okra, while still stirring, followed by the onion, pepper and celery. This will cool the roux. Add the garlic. Stir well, then whisk in the warm shrimp stock. Add the bay leaves, cayenne, salt. Whisk in the fi lé. Lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Add sausage and cook for another 30 minutes. Adjust seasoning. If eating right away add the 2 pounds of shrimp and simmer until shrimp are fi rm.

Now chocolate brown in color with great aroma, it's time to add okra and remaining vegetables. The roux will seize (thicken) up, and is now ready for stock and seasonings to be added.
