Reverse osmosis occurs when the water is moved across the membrane against the concentration gradient, from lower concentration to higher concentration.
In this process, pressure is exerted on the side with the concentrated solution to force the water molecules across the membrane to the fresh water side. This method of filtration is fast becoming norms for commercial and residential water filtration.
It is also one of the preferred methods used worldwide to desalinate seawater. Reverse osmosis is also used in the filtration of drinking water and ultra-pure systems.
The UF membrane system operates on an out-to-in mode where the feed stream flows on the outside of the membrane with the filtrate flowing through the inside. Due to the double-skin construction of the membrane, the filtrate undergoes double filtration during the operation. The reject stream flows off the outer skin of the membrane and is concentrated along the length of the membrane. The reject stream is bled-off to prevent the build-up of solids in the membrane modules. Such feed and bleed operation allows the UF to operate continuously before the need for backwash thereby improving recovery and availability of the system.

Pure Water SystemPure water system is used for pharmaceutical processes which constantly involve elevated temperature, aggressive solvents, acids and caustics. The wastewater generated often has high solid content and stickiness, which is difficult to treat to meet industrial discharge criteria.
Hence, membrane technology has been adopted in the purification process of wastewater, leading to the high recovery rate of the useful elements in the wastewater stream.
Ultra Pure SystemUsed in Semiconductor/MicroElectronics industry where high purity water such as ultra-pure water is used. Water pre-treatment, post treatments as well as water source management are priority activities for the semiconductor companies for environmental and economic purposes.
Drinking Water SystemWater used for human consumption has to meet WHO (World Healthy Organization) as well as govern-ment regulations. That is why, Hyflux includes processes like reverse osmosis, ultra-violet lights and even ultra- Filtration treatments to treat and purify water. Hyflux-IBB is able to provide small drinking (1m3/day) to municipal sized plants (500,000m3/day).
DesalinationOur team of specialists has worked hard to design and build world-class plants for Municipal govern-ments and industrial consumers globally. e.g. China, Indonesia, Algeria, Middle East, Singapore, etc...
Pre-treatmentHyflux’s pre-treatments aid the desalination process so as to avoid a system overload from the untreated water in the later processes. At this stage, the source of the untreated water that needs treatment is specified and based on that, a thorough water analysis is performed. Hyflux-IBB’s preferred pre-treatment solutions include ultra-filtration or just DAF and even Clarifiers.

How does it work?

Reverse OsmosisThe 2-pass RO system ensures that treated water complies with World Health Organization’s drinking water quality standards. The pre-treated seawater is pumped at high pressure through semi-permeable reverse osmosis membranes. No bacteria, viruses, chemicals or dissolved minerals can pass through the membranes. 45% of the influent seawater is recovered from the 1st pass RO, for treatment in the 2nd Pass RO. The 2nd Pass RO further treats the water and recovers 90% of the water. An energy recovering system is employed to fully utilize the residual energy from the 1st Pass RO.
Post-treatmentPost-treatments help to ensure that the treated water meets the exact quality required by end-users such as Municipal governments, industry users for specialty processes and food and beverage.

InoCep® Ceramic Hollow Fibre MembraneThe award-winning InoCep® membrane is able to tolerate high temperatures and extreme pH conditions as well as high solids content. It is ideal for waste/wastewater treatment and can be used to resolve separation bottlenecks in a wide range of industries, such as the metal/steel mill, chemical process, food & beverage, and biopharmaceutical industries.
The robust design of the InoCep® membrane combines the advantages of high chemical, mechanical and thermal resistance, as well as the compactness and low cost of that of polymeric hollow fibres.
FerroCep® Stainless Steel Tubular MembraneThe tubular cross-flow technology and stainless steel construction are the main reasons why Hyflux Ferrocep® is the membrane of choice for handling difficult industrial streams with high viscosity and solid contents under extreme conditions. It is ideal for fermentation broths like amino acids, antibiotics, vitamins and clarifications. This inert and highly durable inorganic membrane can withstand elevated temperatures and pressures, concentrated solvents or extreme pH conditions.
