What Is In Vitro Fertilization?

IVF is an intense process spanning 40 daysfrom start of medications to the pregnancy test that determines if the process has beensuccessful. A woman must undergo multipleinjections of hormones for 20 days, visit thedoctor’s office for ultrasounds and blood testsevery two or three days, and undergo a minorsurgical procedure to retrieve eggs from herovaries. Eggs are then fertilized with thefather’s sperm in the laboratory, and resultingembryos are transferred back to the mother’suterus. Then everybody waits.... After twoweeks, a pregnancy test is performed.

Imagine the couple whose first IVF attemptfails. Dreams dashed, their disappointment isimmense. And then the realization: “Where will

we find $10,000 to try again?”

If first you don’t succeed...

Partnership for Families Fund

To help couples in this situation, the ClevelandClinic Partnership for Families Leadership Boardwas formed in December 2003. The 23 couples onthe board come from varied backgrounds but allhave an interest in promoting one main goal – tohelp make families possible.

The board has established the Partnership for Families

Fund to provide grants for a second IVF cycle forqualified couples, all of whom have paid for theirfirst unsuccessful IVF cycle and cannot afford a sec-ond try without assistance. The fund provides grantsof $8,000 worth of IVF medical services per couple. In addition, Serono Pharmaceuticals provides about$2,000 in medications for all eligible grant recipi-ents through their Compassionate Care Program.

The Partnership for Families Fund aims to provide grantsto as many qualified couples as possible. That’s whywe need generous supporters like you.

You surely know how important families are. Isn’t itgratifying to know that you can help a couple realizetheir dream of having a family?

Please support the Partnership for Families Program witha contribution — any size is appreciated. Checks canbe made payable to the Partnership for FamiliesFund and sent to:

“Coming from someone who has faced the possibility

of not having kids, dealing with that, and then being

lucky enough to have four beautiful ones through IVF,

I recognize the sadness of a couple who wants to con-

tinue to try through the program and the only reason

they can’t is money. That is very sad to me — I love

the fact that I may be able to help some of those cou-

ples realize their dreams of having children....”

— Partnership for Families

Leadership Board member

“I think you know how passionately we feel about

the work that you do and how grateful we are for

your help in conceiving our family. We have often

reflected on the agony that couples must feel when

their financial limitations impact their ability to

have a family. We would love to support a place

that does such important work with compassion

and vision for the future.”
