In a recent article featured on Entrepreneur.com, Brian Fielkow, Business Leader, Author, and Keynote speaker, discusses the importance of a

meaningful connection between a charity and its contributors. Too often today, employees support

charities that haven’t been chosen by them, but their employer.

They give for givings sake but aren’t necessarily emotionally invested. Fielkow, therefore, states that “while the donations may be put to good use, the act

of giving thus becomes more of an empty ritual”.

Here are 4 ways to engage your employees and develop meaningful community participation:

1. Let employees take the wheel

In order to let employees become emotionally invested in a cause, involve them in the process. This doesn’t have to end at merely choosing a charity. Let them drive a plethora of

endeavors – from youth sports to fun runs to church activities, etc.

“Let employees lead you to community events and don’t force anyone to participate in programs devoid of meaning

for them”.

2. Involve staffers in your outreach efforts

On the other side, bring your employees along when you yourself become involved in a community event. If you’re passionate about a specific cause, share your excitement

with your company and invite them to join you.

3. Be active

Look for programs that go beyond monetary donations. Find charitable organizations that let you participate in

events and make a difference by sharing your time and skill.#!

Being physically involved in an activity can be very rewarding; sometimes even more so than donating money.

These events may also end up becoming very memorable for your employees.

4. Switch things around

If you have found your cause and donate regularly, by all means, keep it up. At the same time, Fielkow suggests taking on a new cause each year in addition. “By giving

attention to a variety of charities of interest to employees, more team members will become engaged.”
