Give Yourself a Break This Summer by Grasscycling Summer is here. Save yourself some time and energy this growing season by Grasscycling, which is the process of leaving your grass clippings on your lawn after mowing. Grasscycling makes mowing quicker and easier and is the natural way to return nutrients back to your lawn. More than one-third of Denver’s household trash is composed of yard debris and grass clippings, with grass clippings consistently being one of the most wasted materials from April to September. By Grasscycling, you can help stop this material from ending up in landfills and have a real impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Give Grasscycling a try this summer and see what you think!

TIPS FOR HOW TO GRASSCYCLE SUCCESSFULLY:

1. USE ANY MOWER. Remove the mower collection bag to allow clippings to fall back on the lawn. If your mower does not have a safety flap covering the opening over which the bag fits, then you may need to purchase a retrofit kit from your local hardware store.

2. MOW WHEN IT’S DRY. Wet grass clippings clump together and do not feed your lawn as well as

dry grass clippings.

3. FOLLOW THE “1/3 RULE.” To foster healthy grass, do not cut more than 1/3 of the length of the grass at any time, and leave clippings no more than one inch long. Lawns are most healthy when they are mowed to a height of 2 ½ to 3 inches.

If you hire a landscaper to mow, be sure to ask them to adopt Grasscycling methods when mowing your lawn.

Tossing Your Old Textiles is So Last Year!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that

Americans generate nearly 16 million tons of textile waste

each year, and that only 15% of this material gets recycled.

That equates to over 70 pounds of textile waste generated, per

person, per year! Our systemic culture of consumerism and

appetite for fast fashion contribute to the high amount of

waste generated by Americans, but it’s not to say we should

feel helpless when it comes to curbing our textile waste.

Denver residents have access to plenty of resources that can help reduce and recycle their textile

material.

REDUCE

• Rent! Don’t Buy. Believe it or not, the sharing economy extends to clothing too. Whether it’s a

wedding or another formal occasion, local retailers and online platforms offer opportunities to

rent suits, gowns and other accessories. Instead of letting underutilized formal wear gather dust

in your closet after wearing it just once, save money and rent special event clothing instead.

• Host or Attend a Clothing Swap. Just because you’re tired of that suit or shirt you’ve had in your

closet for years, it might be just what someone else is looking for. Use a clothing swap as an

excuse to get together with friends and freshen up your wardrobe.

REUSE AND RECYCLE

• Thrift Stores. Whether it’s for clothing or for repurposing, your unwanted clothing is still in high

demand. Some Denver area thrift stores take clothing even if it’s stained, ripped or otherwise

unfit for wear, but be sure to always check the clothing donation guidelines for your local thrift

store prior to dropping anything off.

• Textile Recyclers. Look for drop-boxes located all over the Denver metro area. Many clothes

donated to these outlets are shipped abroad or turned into cleaning rags here in the U.S.

BE A RESPONSIBLE CONSUMER

• Buy Second-Hand or Vintage. From casual consignment stores, to costume shops to bridal

boutiques, Denver area businesses have you covered with second-hand options.

• Buy Recycled-Content. The recycling industry is sustained through the demand for products

made from recycled-content materials. Check labels for recycled-content components the next

time you buy clothing, shoes, carpeting, and cleaning rags. These items are commonly made

with recycled or repurposed textiles, or other recycled materials.

• Support Products Backed by “Extended Producer Responsibility.” Look for retailer-sponsored

repair and/or take-back programs for textiles. These programs encourage higher-quality and

recyclability of textile products on the market.

Recicle la hierba cortada y tendrá más tiempo libre este verano

Ya es verano. Este año, ahorre tiempo y energía reciclando la hierba cortada, es decir, dejándola sobre el césped después de cortarla. Esta práctica, que en inglés se conoce como grasscycling, reduce el tiempo y el trabajo que implica cortar el césped y es además la forma natural de reincorporar los nutrientes al césped. La hierba cortada y otros residuos del jardín constituyen más de la tercera parte de la basura que se descarta en los hogares de Denver y la hierba cortada siempre figura entre los materiales más desperdiciados entre abril y septiembre. Recicle la hierba cortada y no solo evitará que termine en el vertedero, sino que contribuirá de veras a reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Este verano, deje los trocitos de hierba cortada en el césped, ¡a ver qué le parece! SUGERENCIAS PARA RECICLAR LA HIERBA CORTADA CON ÉXITO:

1. PUEDE USAR CUALQUIER CORTADORA. Lo que sí hace falta es quitar la bolsa colectora de la cortadora, para que los trocitos de hierba puedan caer al suelo. Si su cortadora no cuenta con una tapa de protección que cubra el orificio sobre el cual se conecta la bolsa, busque un kit de adaptación en una ferretería local.

2. CORTE EL CÉSPED CUANDO NO ESTÉ MOJADO. Cuando el césped está mojado, los trocitos de

hierba se apelmazan y no alimentan el césped tan bien como si estuvieran secos.

3. SIGA LA "REGLA DE 1/3". Para fomentar la buena salud del césped, no corte más de la tercera parte de la altura de la hierba por vez y procure que los recortes que caen al suelo no midan más de una pulgada (2.5 cm). El césped se mantiene más sano cortándolo a una altura de 2.5 a 3 pulgadas (7-8 cm).

Si ha contratado un servicio de jardinería, pídales que adopten técnicas de reciclaje al cortarle el césped.

¿Tirar la ropa vieja? ¡Eso sí que está pasado de moda!

La Agencia de Protección Ambiental (Environmental

Protection Agency, EPA) de los EE.UU. calcula que los

estadounidenses generan casi 16 millones de toneladas de

residuos textiles al año y que tan solo el 15 % de estos

materiales se recicla. ¡Esto equivale a casi 30 kg (70 libras)

de residuos textiles al año por persona! La cultura sistémica

consumista y nuestro apetito por la moda rápida

contribuyen a la gran cantidad materiales que descartamos,

pero no cabe duda de que existen maneras de reducir la

cantidad de residuos textiles que generamos.

En Denver, tenemos acceso a muchos recursos que pueden ayudarnos a reciclar y a reducir la cantidad

de material textil que desechamos.

REDUZCA

• No compre, ¡alquile! Aunque le parezca mentira, existe una economía compartida en el ámbito

de la moda. Tanto para las bodas como para otras ocasiones formales, hay negocios locales y

plataformas en internet que permiten alquilar trajes, vestidos de fiesta y accesorios. En lugar de

tener su ropa de fiesta en el armario después de usarla una sola vez, alquílela y ahorre dinero.

• Organice o asista a un evento de intercambio de prendas de vestir. Quizás esté aburrido de esa

camisa o traje que hace años que no saca del armario, pero podría ser exactamente lo que otra

persona está buscando. Un evento de intercambio de ropa es un buen pretexto para reunirse

con los amigos y renovar su guardarropa.

REUTILICE Y RECICLE

• Tiendas de segunda mano. Hay gran demanda por la ropa que usted ya no usa, ya sea para

reventa o para reutilización con otros fines. En la zona de Denver, hay tiendas de segunda mano

que aceptan incluso la ropa manchada, rasgada o que no está en condiciones de usarse por

otros motivos, pero es buena idea preguntar cuáles son las pautas de aceptación de la tienda

antes de llevar algún artículo dudoso.

• Recicladoras de textiles. Hay cajas de donación en muchas partes de la zona metropolitana de

Denver. Las organizaciones que aceptan estas donaciones envían muchas de estas prendas al

extranjero o las transforman en trapos de limpieza dentro del país.

SEA UN CONSUMIDOR RESPONSABLE

• Compre ropa de segunda mano o vintage. Desde las tiendas de consignación de ropa informal

hasta las tiendas de disfraces y las boutiques para novias, los negocios de la zona de Denver

ofrecen gran variedad de tiendas de segunda mano.

• Compre productos con contenido reciclado. La industria de reciclaje se mantiene gracias a la

demanda de productos elaborados con materiales con contenido reciclado. La próxima vez que

compre ropa, zapatos, alfombras o trapos de cocina, lea la etiqueta para comprobar si el

producto contiene componentes de contenido reciclado. Muchos de estos artículos se elaboran

con textiles reciclados o reutilizados o con otros materiales reciclados.

• Apoye los productos respaldados por principios de «responsabilidad extendida del

productor». Averigüe si el comerciante ofrece programas de reparación o de devolución de los

textiles. Estos programas fomentan la producción de textiles de mejor calidad y más reciclables

en el mercado.
