The reasons for a choice:direct sales

9

Direct sales are a solid andstructured channel, developed overthe years to the point of acquiringparticular features that traditionalcommercial structures don’t have.

Traditional structures have to offera range of similar products in arange of different prices, whereasdirect sales allows for apersonalized demonstrationtailored to the needs of everysingle family.

This way, with the help of thesalesman, an advisor capable ofsolving every doubt related tohousehold cleaning and hygiene, potential Customers can discoverthe product’s features andperformance through a real“hands-on” approach.

Vorwerk saw this as the only wayof demonstrating the uniquenessof its products, and so decidedthat was the only way to presentthem. Indeed, direct sales is theonly way of establishing a directrapport with Customers, enteringtheir homes and presentingsomething that will enhance theirquality of life. A choice that goeshand in hand with the philosophyof Total Quality that Vorwerk hasfollowed since its beginnings, demonstrating a far-sightednessthat separates it from thecompetition. But such a cuttingedge, high technology product stillneeds the support of

another fundamental link in thechain: a personalized service forguiding customers in getting toknow, trying out and buying theproduct.

From this came the commitmentto develop a sales network that wastruly up to the job, and that nowcounts hundreds of thousandadvisors all over the world, distinguished for theirprofessionalism, profoundknowledge of the product andgreat relational skills.

With a wide network of SalesOffices and Service Centres, andan excellent customer care service,Vorwerk pays the greatestattention to after-sales support.

Because the relationship with theCustomer doesn’t end with thedemonstration, but goes on afterpurchase as well, throughcontinual, long-term service.

A history of improvingthe quality of life

8

Vorwerk is the leading company inthe field of household cleaningappliances: since the thirties, thevacuum cleaners manufactured atthe factories of the VorwerkGroup have always been theperfect solution to householdcleaning problems. Vorwerk is asuccess created by focusingattention on one key factor: theCustomer. Never losing track ofconsumer demands, Vorwerk hasbeen able to market a product thatcombines technology andsimplicity, high quality andcaptivating design.A highly complex machine, developed though continualinnovation resulting in hundredsof exclusive patents, the Kobold isextremely simple to use, making ita very practical and effectiveappliance. From the outset, the

company began an ongoingprocess of research into aestheticsapplied to its machines, to givefamilies a product capable ofblending into the domesticenvironment perfectly, withoutlooking out of place. A Philosophyof Quality that reflects in ourmotto “Our best for your family”,and in the makeup of our SalesForce. From the very outsetVorwerk adopted the direct, houseto house sales channel as the bestand only way of bringing itsproducts into the homes of Italianfamilies. The relationships that thiscreates with Customers reflect thePhilosophy of Quality:relationships that our Salesmenbuild day by day, starting out froma Demonstration, and continuingafter the sale through constantsupport.

The beginning of the ‘70 sawthe first dry cleaning system forcarpets and rugs, with Kobosanand Refreshing Kit addingeffective chemical action to thesystem’s suction and mechanicalaction. In the ‘eighties the KoboldVK 120 brought a new dimensionto the concept of modularity, becoming one of the world mostwidely used vacuum cleaner.

In the early ‘nineties the“Kobold System” concept reachedcompletion with the birth ofPulilux, a new appliance that wascapable of cleaning hard floors ina new and effective way. The yeartwo thousand is an importantmilestone: the Kobold Systemunderwent a technological andconceptual evolution, making animportant step on the road towardinnovating household cleaningappliances.

Entering the XXI century, Koboldis the synthesis of a decade ofcommitment, passion and research.World families now have at hand anintegrated and modular Systemcapable of tackling any type ofcleaning problem: hard floors, carpets -even delicate ones-,carpeting, cleaning the largest orsmallest surfaces, on mattresses andupholstery. In a word: everywherethere’s dust. Because it is a system, the Kobold is capable of combiningsuction power with effectivemechanical action and the gentlestrength of chemicals, to restore apleasant and healthy environment, for you and your family.

Today a new generation ofKobold is carrying on this vision. Our new System respects the envi-ronment, combining low energy con-sumption with high efficiency. Itssafety and quality are assured bymany of the world’s leading certifica-tions. The brand new KoboldVK 140 generation has been projectedto be even more light and powerful, easy handling and effective, quietand astonishing designed. Its electro-nic heart set a new state of the art inthe market. With well-being in mind,Kobold has developed a new andexclusive generation of special filterthat reduce the allergic potential ofdust by retaining the particles theycollect, especially the smallest andmost harmful. And all this techno-logy is even more easy to use.

11

Only a century ago, cleaning ahouse meant enormous effort. What now is just part of our dailyroutine was once a task thatdemanded an unthinkable amountof energy. The main reason forthis situation was the simple lackappliances efficient enough toreally clean, rather than justmoving dust around as was sooften the case. After this“prehistoric” period for domesticappliances, the first real vacuumcleaners began to appear. Thatwas in the early twentieth century, when the advertisements used toboast features like “our cleanersare so light they can be lifted byjust two people”: slogans thatsound funny now, but you have toremember that up until the latetwenties all domesticappliances were gigantic, difficultto use, costly and above allinefficient.

This was the situation whenVorwerk began introducinginnovations in the thirties. TheGerman company marketed aproduct that revolutionized theconcept of the vacuum cleaner,

with revolutionary features forthe time: it was light, practical, effective and relatively cheap. They baptized the new machine“Kobold”, the sprite: anenchanting name for a productdestined to become worldfamous thanks to its exceptionalqualities. The new product wonthe hearts and homes of peopleimmediately, thanks to highlycompetitive features and thedirect sales strategy adopted bythe Group. From then on, saleswent from strength to strength,to give millions of families theideal solution to the problem ofhousehold cleaning. Soon afterits birth, the Kobold wasalready something more thanjust a vacuum cleaner.Equipped with a full range ofaccessories for all householdneeds, it began to show itsdecisive multifunctionalcharacteristics.

The decades that followed werea succession of innovations, fruitof unrelenting attention totechnological research. At the end of the ‘50 the firstelectric carpet-brush was presentedin Europe, which combinedsuction power with a mechanicalaction capable of cleaning carpetslike never before. New accessoriesincreased the range of floors andsurfaces the Kobold could clean, and the “Kobold System” beganto take shape.

Premium Filterbag FP 40:3 in 1With the development of the newKobold VK 140 comes also a brandnew and innovative filteringtechnology included in thePremium Filterbag FP 40.

The new Premium Filterbag FP 40has 3 features in 1 filterbag:

high filtration efficiency (HEPAclassification); optimized dust capacity (rela-tive to the comparatively small fil-ter volume); odour filtration and a pleasantfragrance in combination withDovina.

Moreover, with the use of the newPremium Filterbag FP 40, the greatsuction power of the KoboldVK 140 lasts for a longer period.

In contrast to the Kobold VK 140other vacuum cleaners need atleast 2 filter elements for achievinga comparable filtrationperformance.

The so called HEPA filter (HighEfficiency Particulate Air Filter) isintegrated inside the Filterbag, thisallows the filtering of the smallestparticles, inhalable by man, whichcan cause allergies.

The new filtering system

12

Filtration Efficiency(HEPA, High EfficiencyParticulate Air Filter)The filtration efficiency of filterelements is evaluated by theEuropean standard EN1822.According to this standard thePremium Filterbag FP 40 hasachieved HEPA H11 level, thismeans that our Filterbag can blockup to 99% of particles with sizearound 0.09 µm (1000 timessmaller than a human hair), andsince bacteria have an average sizeof 0.5 µm to 50 µm, the PremiumFilterbag FP 40 effectively filtersout 99% of all bacteria. To achieve this result, we usedspecial materials that attract dustand dirt thanks to their particularelectrostatic charge.

The Kobold VK 140 system hasachieved the TÜV seal as aguarantee for allergy sufferers: theemission of allergens are below allknown medical and allergologicallimits.

Optimized Dust CapacityThe Kobold VK 140 was designedto be compact and lightweight andextremely easy to handle, and eventhe Filtrello Premium FP 40 wasdesigned to have great dustcapacity despite its relatively lowvolume of just 2.5 liters. This is thanks to the special bagconfiguration, with three differentlayers, shown in FIGURE B.

Every layer has to fulfill a specialfiltration function.

The pre-separation layer consistsof a very voluminous fabricmaterial which removes largerparticles and fibers (e.g. fromanimals, carpets, dust etc.) andstores these inside the layer. However, smaller particles canpenetrate the pre-separation layer, but the adjacent precipitation layerremoves these very small particles.

This is thanks to their specialelectrostatic charge.

By the pre-separation of largerparticles and fibers a prematureclogging of the filter bag can beavoided and the dust capacity ofthe filter bag can be increased. This ensures a long-lasting andhigh suction power for theKobold VK 140.

The outer layer is made of astrong fabric designed to preventdamage to the inner layers.

Odour FiltrationThe built-in anti-odour pearlsabsorb bad odours inside the filterbag.

These pearls have and incrediblylarge activated surface area.

Each gram of these pearls has anequivalent surface area of around6 tennis courts.

The open porous structure adsorbsthe smell deep inside the anti-odour pearls where it remains.Combined with the Dovinafragrance chip your house smellsfresh and clean.

TÜV CertificatedPremium Filterbag FP 40(first certified bag ever)The FP 40 Premium Filterbag isthe world’s first filter bag to becertifiedby the TÜV Nord authority as apremium quality filter bag.

This certification is only awardedto high-quality filter bags that havespecial hygienic properties.

Highest filtration efficiency Odour filtration High dust capacity related tothe filtration volume Brilliant fine dust reduction, and bacteria removal Insignificant impact with finedust for customers while filter bagreplacement and disposal Best germs retention Highest strength durability ofthe filter bag

9 times patentedPremium Filterbag FP 40A total of 9 patents are proof ofthe highly innovative technologyused for the FP 40 Filterbag.

The new FP 40 Filterbag’s capacityto retain micro-particles andallergens is guaranteed for 3 yearsfrom the date of manufacture. After this period, retention capacitydecreases, just as the HEPA filter.

However, this has no effect on theusability of the filterbag and doesnot damage the appliance.

14

There are many sources ofhousehold dust: people and petscontinually shed scales of deadskin tissue, hair and fur. Normallife habits (household chores, cooking, eating, hobbies, smoking, etc.) create other kinds of dust andparticles. Particles and heavymetals get into our homes everyday through doors and windows,on shoes, clothes and anything elsebrought in from the outside.Mattresses, upholstery, carpets andrugs trap this dirt, and producedust themselves as well.Household dust is thus made up oforganic and inorganic substances.High concentrations of certaintypes of these substances, calledallergens, can cause allergies, evenin people who have never sufferedthem before. By allergy, we meanan overreaction of the body toother wise innocuous substances inthe environment. Many of thesesubstances, to which many peopleare allergic, are produced by mitesin household dust.

Dust mites belong to the arachnidspecies (like spiders) and feedmainly on dead skin and bacteria.People with allergic illnessesusually have a hereditarypredisposition to developinghypersensitivity to ambientallergens, but more often than notit is prolonged contact with thesesubstances that effectivelygenerates the reaction. Sincepeople spend most of their time

in confined spaces, care for ourhomes is a fundamental factor incaring for our health.Caring for the home doesn’t meanjust removing visible dirt(traditional cleaning) but alsoeliminating invisible dirt, hazardous to our health, toimprove the quality of life in thedomestic environment. Vorwerkhas long since gone beyond thesimple concept of vacuum cleaner. Our challenge is to providefamilies with a global system forremoving dirt: easy to use, manageable, quick and versatile, able to reach into every corner ofthe house to prevent dirtaccumulating. Vorwerk has fittedits appliances with a state of the afiltering system, capable ofretaining 99.97% of particlesdown to 0.09 microns. For this reason, Vorwerkappliances have been awarded theprestigious TÜV and HEPAmarkings for their anti-allergiceffectiveness and quality. Thesefilters are a real help, especiallywith small children and petsaround the house.
