City & Metropolitan Planning Department University of Utah 1 GIS Workshop for CMP students Dong-ah Choi [email protected] Fall 2019 Hello everyone. Welcome to CMP program. This instruction will walk you through steps of ArcGIS set-up and a couple of exercises that help you to be ready for the semester. If you have questions or need some help, feel free to ask during the workshop or send me an email. 1. ArcGIS Desktop Installation If you are a Mac user, please read the following “Important note for Mac users” carefully before going ahead. If you already have Windows on your laptop, check “Important note for students who already have ArcGIS” and go to page 2. * Important note for Mac users: ArcGIS is available only for use in a Window environment. So, to run ArcGIS on an Apple computer, Mac users must set up a Window to install ArcGIS. You can start installing Windows during this session. Get some help from the following links: Download Windows (ISO): https://software.utah.edu/news/ms_/student_licenses.php ü As part of the University’s Microsoft Campus Agreement, Windows 10 is available for free. You can download a Windows disk image file (ISO) from the campus website above (“4. How do I obtain the software?” -> “Window Upgrade”: When you click “Download”, there will be a link for Mac users. Do not select the others.). Install Windows using Bootcamp: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468 ü Although there are two options (Virtual Machines and Bootcamp) to have a Windows environment on Mac, I recommend using Bootcamp. While Virtual Machines may be an extra cost, Bootcamp is free. Moreover, because you are not splitting memory between running Windows and running Mac at the same time, ArcGIS on Bootcamp will run at full speed. (Recommended partition size: 50GB or more) ü Once you have installed Windows, make sure that you have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) as well: https://software.utah.edu/news/ms_/student_licenses.php (“4. How do I obtain the software?” -> “Office for Windows”) Technical Support: If you have an issue of having a Windows environment on your Apple computer, you can get technical support from our experienced department staffs, Don Burris (Information systems Assistant, [email protected]) and Derick Bingman (Information Systems & Facilities Manager, [email protected]). * Important note for students who already have ArcGIS: If you already have ArcGIS installed on your computer, you can use it as long as it is not a very old version (I recommend 10.3 or later). Just note that all the following instructions are based on ArcGIS 10.7.1, so there can be some differences between lab instructions and your ArcGIS window. If you want to upgrade your ArcGIS to version 10.7.1, uninstall the older version before following the installation guidelines below.

GIS Workshop for CMP students Dong-ah Choi [email protected] Fall 2019 Hello everyone.

Get some help from the following links:

• Download Windows (ISO): https://software.utah.edu/news/ms_/student_licenses.php ü As part of the University’s Microsoft Campus Agreement, Windows 10 is available for

free. You can download a Windows disk image file (ISO) from the campus website above (“4. How do I obtain the software?” -> “Window Upgrade”: When you click “Download”, there will be a link for Mac users. Do not select the others.).

• Install Windows using Bootcamp: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201468 ü Although there are two options (Virtual Machines and Bootcamp) to have a Windows

environment on Mac, I recommend using Bootcamp. While Virtual Machines may be an extra cost, Bootcamp is free. Moreover, because you are not splitting memory between running Windows and running Mac at the same time, ArcGIS on Bootcamp will run at full speed. (Recommended partition size: 50GB or more)

ü Once you have installed Windows, make sure that you have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) as well: https://software.utah.edu/news/ms_/student_licenses.php (“4. How do I obtain the software?” -> “Office for Windows”)

• Technical Support: If you have an issue of having a Windows environment on your Apple computer, you can get technical support from our experienced department staffs, Don Burris (Information systems Assistant, [email protected]) and Derick Bingman (Information Systems & Facilities Manager, [email protected]).

Exercise 1. Where is your neighborhood? 1) Load a base map in ArcMap

2) Find your neighborhood, using zoom /pan tools.

* Note: If you have a mouse, use the scroll wheel to zoom in/out. When you hold down the mouse wheel, it will act as pan tool that allows you to grab and move the map in any direction.

3) Make a small group (2-3 persons) and talk about where your neighborhood is located

Exercise 2. Does your neighborhood have good access to urban parks? 1) Download Utah local park data

• Go to Utah AGRC website https://gis.utah.gov/, where you can download various spatial data for Utah

• Click Data -> scroll down and find Recreation category -> click Local Parks -> click Download Local Parks -> download “ParksLocal_shp.zip” from the Google Drive

• Find and Unzip the downloaded file

2) Open the data in ArcMap

• Go back to your ArcMap. Do not delete the basemap layer.

• Click Add Data -> Connect to Folder -> navigate the folder where you have the downloaded data -> OK

• In the connected folder, find and open ParksLocal.shp -> Add * You can ignore Geographic Coordinate System Warning window. It is letting you know that there is a difference between coordinate in your data, which is fine for now.

3) Change the park layer symbology

• In the Table of Contents, double-click the mini color box under the park layer

• Change the Fill/Outline Color as you wish.

4) Create a 0.25-mile buffer (5-minutes walking distance) around parks

• Open Geoprocessing menu -> open Buffer tool • Input values will be as below:

o Input Features: ParksLocal o Output Feature Class: accept the default path

* you can change where to save the buffer using o Distance: 0.25 Mile o Dissolve Type: ALL

• Click OK. It will be done in a couple of minutes. Once it’s done, the new buffer layer will be added to the Table of Contents automatically.

5) Change the buffer layer symbology

• Change the color as you want • Double-click the layer name -> In the Properties window, open Display tab -> give 50%

transparency to see through things beneath it

6) Zoom into your neighborhood and talk about whether your neighborhood has good access to urban parks in your group

Exercise 3. Designing map layout 1) Switch from data view to layout view

• View menu -> Layout View. • In layout view, you can select the data frame of your map document as a graphic element in the

page layout – it can be moved and resized.

2) Zoom to the extents of your neighborhood. You must use , not .

*Note: There are two sets of zooming/panning navigation controls in ArcMap: Navigation in a data frame and Navigation in layout view. The first set controls what part of the Earth's surface is shown in the data frame; these are the only controls available when you interact with your map in data view. The second set controls what part of your page layout is shown in layout view. Both the first AND the second set of navigation controls are available while you are in layout view, but be aware that you will default to the layout navigation tools (zoom, pan) when you switch to layout view, and will have to actively switch to the data view navigation tools if you want to change what part of the earth's surface you want to show on the map.

3) Add map elements:

• Title: Insert menu -> Text -> A small text box will show up in the middle of your map layout. Double-click the text box and type in the title of your map. You can change the font size, color, and styles in the Change Symbol window.

• Legend: Insert -> Legend • North Arrow: Insert -> North Arrow • Scale Bar: Insert -> Scale Bar • Other information (e.g., date, your name, data source, etc.): Insert -> Text • Experiment with many different styles of these map elements and chose what you prefer. Place

the map elements in an appropriate place of the page.

4) Get feedback on your map/layout in your group and improve it accordingly.

5) Send me ([email protected]) your final map by 11:59 pm today. The best map design will get a prize.
