Software Tools Capabilities Notes AccessGoogle Maps Engine Lite Google Fusion Tables

Draw features, import points from spreadsheet, share as web map. Limited to 3 layers containing less than 100 features each. Import spreadsheet points, addresses or place names. View and share data in Google Maps, export KML to view in Google Earth.

Easy to use, but very limited functionality.

Limit up to 1000 point features.

Google Earth

Google Earth Pro

Navigate imagery, 3D terrain and buildings, and many reference layers. Import, draw, and share spatial data as KML (points, lines, polygons and 3D features). Measure distance and area, import shapefiles and georeferenced imagery, export movie files and high-resolution print maps, and more. Contains additional licensed datasets, US Parcels, demographics, and Traffic count data.

Easy and versatile. Limited tools for measurement and no analysis functions. Extends mapping functionality and provides additional reference datasets.

Free download

Free educational 30-seat software grants, renewed annually.

Open Data Kit

Open-source tools to design, collect and aggregate forms (tabular data) using mobile devices.

Android only. Similar to ESRI Collector App for iOS and Android.

Google Maps Engine

Google Earth Engine

Upload, collaborate, and publish your own spatial data on the web using Google’s cloud infrastructure.

Develop, access and run algorithms on the extensive Earth Engine data archive (Landsat 4-8 and derivatives, SRTM, nation-wide 10m DEM mosaic, etc), all using Google's parallel processing platform.

Much like ESRI ArcGIS Online for Organizations

Unique, powerful, and in-development. Accessed using the Earth Engine API.

Free educational organization account upon request.

Free organization ‘Trusted Tester’ account on request.
