VisionDetroit Public Schools will be:
• the “go to” Place for GIS professionals when searching for GIS workforce talent.
• the Center of Excellence for GIS Education in the United States
• the Center of Excellence for GIS Education in the World
Detroit Public Schools Youth Technology Corps GIS Initiative
Goal:Increase critical thinking and problem solving through purposeful applications of technologybased education using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and community-based, problemsolving activities.
Detroit Public School Youth Technology Corps GIS InitiativePROJECT RATIONALE
• A GIS helps answer questions and solve problems by looking at data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. • EMU has secured a grant to support teacher and student GIS training through
the GRACE Project (GIS/T Resources & Applications for Career Education) to provide GIS classroom experiences to 5,000 students, 300 interns and 120 teachers.
• GIS also offers viable and lucrative career paths for young people• There is a high need for and a scarcity of GIS professionals in America• ESRI supports DPS access to GIS software to support student and teacher
education• The City of Detroit is in desperate need of GIS services. Student interns can
provide a vast array of services including: creating Story maps to promote the City of Detroit as part of a Pure Detroit
campaign. mapping location and condition of fire hydrants. mapping location and condition of water and sewerage infrastructure.
• Students need internship experiences to validate the ESRI industry recognized certificates students earn from on-line courses
GRACE is a continuation of a successful 2008-2011 NSF – ITEST funded project:
Mayors Youth Technology Corps (MYTC) Creating Safe Communities through Information Technology
Training in Homeland Security Applications
Our Partners in Geospatial Learning• Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) – GIS
Industry Leader• National Science Foundation – Innovative Technology
Experiences for Students and Teachers ( NSF – ITEST) - GIS/T Resources and Applications for Career Education (GRACE Project)
• 2008 award, $1.8 mil for 3 year project• 2014 award, $2.2 mil for 4 years
• Eastern Michigan University (EMU)• Institute of Geospatial Research and Education (IGRE)• MI Virtual University (MiVU)• Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network
(MMSCN)• Michigan Community Association of Mapping Professionals
(MiCAMP)
