Girls use simple chemistry and lots of creativity to mix and make fun things for their spa!
summer 2016
Class Description –Mix it, make it, try it out and take it home! Girls get busy making Fizzy Bath Bombs, Sweet Lip Smackers, Shake ‘Em Up Bath Salts, Yummy Face Masks and more. They’ll become clever spa scientists for the week as they learn about ingredients and how to combine them to make fun (and fabulous!) pampering goodies. They also get busy playing around with packaging and naming their concoctions in this spa-chemistry exploration — the end of the week is “Spa Day,” where girls sample and share what they have made!
Goals –This class is meant to teach the girls about basic chemistry, as well as encourage them to feel com-fortable building their own brands.
The main themes the girls should focus on during the week are the following:
Getting Started (Day 1)Today’s goal is to make spa baskets and have the girls start thinking about their logos and brands. Explore the idea of starting a company, and making something your own. The brands do not have to be completed today-- the girls can think about and change them throughout the week. However, do try to get the baskets done today-- it’ll make organization and cleanup easier later!
Cute N’ Clean (Day 2) Spend today making projects you can use in the bath! Today’s projects tend to be popular. Try to get through both projects, if you can. You can save the projects you don’t get to for later, if you have time!
Pampering Projects (Day 3)Today’s projects are meant to help the girls relax. Teach the girls basic sewing through the eye masks project, and explore scents by playing the scent guessing game!
Dressing Up (Day 4)The girls should spend today making cute, fun, or wacky-colored beauty projects. If they finish these projects early, the girls can try on their new beauty supplies, or work on their logos.
Spa Day (Day 5)The point of today is to test out the products the girls made throughout the week! The girls should have the opportunity to try out their eye masks and homemade makeup. They can even bring in flip flops to give each other mani-pedis, which they can dry off during a relaxation period. If the girls want to do something active, they can play sleepover games like “Never Have I Ever” or “Truth or Dare”!
By the end of the week, the girls should be able to finish up their logos and brands, so they can have a beautiful finished spa basket to share with their families and friends when they get home!

Compass Name GameTime30 minutes
Steps
1. Have participants stand in a circle.
2. One volunteer stands in the middle of the circle and starts the game as the “caller.”
3. The caller points at a member of the circle and says one of the following: You, Me, Left, or Right.
4. Based on which direction the caller says, the person being pointed at must correctly name that person. “You” is the name of the person being pointed at. “Me” is the caller. “Left” or “Right” are the people on the person on the circle’s left or right side.
5. Once the caller points and says the direction, he/she must count to five aloud. The person must correctly identify the name before the caller reaches five.
6. If the person in the circle incorrectly identifies the name, or doesn’t speak in time, that person be-comes the new caller in the middle of the circle.
7. If the person correctly identifies the name, the caller must move onto a new person of their choice.
TipsIf the girls don’t know each other well yet, it may be helpful to go around the circle and have each girl say her name before starting the game.

Steps
1. Everyone in the group stands in a circle.
2. The first person says, “My name is and I like to ______ (insert hobby and act out a motion from that hobby.)
3. The rest of group then says, “(Person’s Name) likes to (hobby) and acts out motion. Example, “My name is Dave and I like Fish” (acting out casting a reel).
4. The next person repeats the process.
5. The rest of group then says that person’s name, hobby, and motion and the moves onto the first person’s info.
6. This continues until the last person goes, at which the entire group calls out the last person’s info and moves along through the whole group and repeats everyone’s info.

1. Have everyone count the number of let-ters in their first name.
2. Have each girl find someone who has the same number of letters. Those two are now partners.
3. After the girls have made pairs, have them combine their pair with another pair with a similar num-ber of letters.
4. Keep going until everyone in the class has formed one big group!
TipsIf a person can’t find someone let him/her use another name s/he is called by (i.e., a student named Matthew may use the name Matt and then look for someone with 4 letters instead of 7.)
If they still can’t find someone pair up with a person who has the closest number of letters.

GoalHave each girl create her own basket, in which she can store the products she makes throughout the week. The baskets should be branded with each girl’s unique logo.
TimeMulti-Day Project
Project Steps1. Give each girl a basket, and have her spend some time decorating it in any way she would like.
2. After the basket has been decorated, the girls should decide on how to brand their products. Each girl should come up with a branding name, logo, and color scheme, which she can use both to decorate their baskets, and to package the products they make throughout the week.
3. Every time a girl finishes a product, she should spend a little bit of time on packaging and branding. Have the girls put their finished products into whatever packaging style is appro-priate - wrapping paper, boxes, tins, etc - and label it with their own unique logo for their specific brand.
The brands can range from a simple play on the girl’s name (“Alice’s Accessories,” “Sara’s Soaps and Scrubs” or “The Kathy Collection”) to something silly (like, “Wonder Washers” or anything else the girls can come up with).
Each brand should also have a logo of some sort that distinguishes it from other brands. It could also be nice to have a color scheme that each product in the basket shares.
Tips- There may be times throughout the week when one or two girls finishes a project before the rest of her group. When this happens, it could be helpful to tell these girls to work on their products’ “logos” and “branding”.
- Try to have each girl’s name somewhere in or on the baskets, so the girls don’t lose track of whose basket is whose.

What is Branding?Branding is the process of creating a name, symbol, or design that identifies and differentiates a product from other products.
Most of our favorite products are branded! Famous brands include Bath & Bodyworks, Loreal, Covergirl, and Maybel-line, amongst others.

Project Steps1. Give each girl a rubber spatula.
2. Have each girl label their spatula with their brand, either by drawing on the spatula’s handles with permanent markers or by drawing on a paper label and attaching this label to the handle.
3. Decorate the spatula’s handles with stickers, markers, ribbons, etc.

IntroBath time has the ability to make even the crabbiest kid laugh and smile again. There is just something magical about kids and water. Now you can make the fun of bath time a little more exciting by making your own homemade bath bombs for the kids, complete with fun toys hidden inside!
GoalMake homemade “bath bombs” - balls of soap that dissolve in the tub.
Prep- Put food coloring into squirt bottle(s).
- Create a demo, testing the measurements to make sure they work and stick together effectively. Count the number of spritzes you need to have the bath bombs stick together, with-out fizzing up!
Time1 hour
Project Steps1. Together as a group, measure out 1-3/4 cups of the baking soda and pour it into one of the bowls.
2. Add 1 cup of citric acid to the bowl.
3. Add in 2 cups of corn starch, then whisk together the ingre-dients to combine them.
4. Divide the powdered mixture evenly into two bowls, and add a few drops of essential oil to each bowl. I chose orange oil, but you can use any scent that you like.
5. Put a few drops of food coloring in the bottom of your squirt bottle, then fill it up with water.
6. Start spritzing the colored water into one of the bowls. COUNT the number of spritzes the girls do and make sure they don’t spritz more than was necessary for the demo! Continuously whisk the mix-ture while you spray it with water.
If you add too much water or let the water sit for too long it will start to fizz, so add the water slowly and keep stirring.

7. Keep adding water until the mixture becomes roughly the consistency of moist sand and sticks together easily.
8. Press a few tablespoons of the bath bomb mixture firmly into the bottom of a yogurt container for each girl. The amount doesn’t have to be exact.
9. Take one of the small toys and press it into the mixture.
10. Spoon some more of the mixture on top of the toy and press it firmly into the bowl.
11. Flip the bath bombs out of the containers and onto a cookie sheet.
12. The next morning, when the bombs are dry, put them into the organza gift bags
13. Decorate the organza bags (the girls will want colors that match their brand), label, and add them to the spa baskets!
The Science Behind ItThe bath bombs work the same way as Alka Seltzer or soluble aspirin tablets. Like these tablets, the bath bombs are made primarily of sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. These chemicals are inert when they are dry powders, but in water they dissolve and the citric acid reacts with the sodium bicarbonate to form sodium citrate and carbon dioxide.
The sodium citrate stays in solution and you don’t really notice it, but the carbon dioxide bubbles out as a gas that helps the bath bomb break up. This lets the detergents, perfumes and oils that make up the rest of the bath bomb mix with the bathwater.

Project Steps
1. Place the masking tape onto the areas that the girls want to leave “blank”. (This process is called masking. The masked parts of the board will not be painted on, and thus, will not be turned into chalkboards.)
2. Paint the unmasked spaces with chalkboard paint.
3. Let dry.
4. Decorate!

GoalMake homemade bars of soap.
IntroThese soaps are a great combination of design and function. They make excellent gifts and beautiful additions to the girls collections from this week. You will need a stove or hot plate for melting the glycerin, a freezer is handy too. Make sure to stress safety while the glycerin is hot!
PrepMeasure the bottom of your milk carton, and cut squares slightly smaller than your measurement - you don’t want paper sticking out of your soap. Try to cut enough so that each girl can have 3!
Time30 minutes, plus cooling time
Project Steps
1. Have the girls decorate the squares of paper you prepared. Make sure to use permanent markers! Measure the bottom of your milk carton, and cut squares slightly smaller than your measurement - you don’t want paper sticking out of your soap.
2. Over low heat, melt your glycerin in a pot on your stove or hot plate.
If you get the craft store glycerin, use about 4-6 squares per bar.
If you are using a microwave, cut the glycerin into 1x1” blocks (or smaller) and place them in a microwave safe bowl. Cover the bowl and microwave on high for 45 seconds. Stir, then continue microwaving soap in 15 second intervals, stirring in between each time, until your soap base is completely melted.
If you have pieces of soap that the girls/parents donated, you can choose to melt them along with the glycerin, or add them after you pour the glycerin into the molds.

A small paper milk carton (or silicone cupcake molds)
Tracing paper, book pages, transparency paper, any kind of paper, or pretty fab-ric squares.

3. Add the essential oil.
4. Once all the glycerin is melted, pour it into the milk cartons. While it’s still liquid, place the square of paper into the carton, as well. Use a spoon (or SPAtula) to try and get the paper to stick in the middle of the soap, and don’t let it float to the top.
5. Put the whole carton in a freezer for quick setting! Once the soap is solid in the carton, you can start the next soap bar. Repeat all the steps and just pour the next batch over top of the first!
6. Once you’re done with all of them, and they’re all solid, then tear off the carton around the bars.
7. After the cartons have been torn off, the girls should wrap the soaps in something - plastic wrap, newspapers, etc. - and label them with their brand names and logos!

GoalMake a foot scrub that the girls can use at home!
Prep- Melt coconut oil in microwave for 30 seconds or until it be-comes liquid.
- Cut the ribbon into foot long lengths
- You might want to portion out the clear ingredients (sugar, coconut oil, peppermint essential oil, and vitamin e oil) into their bowls before hand so the girls get the proportions right.

Project Steps
1. Before the girls start working on the foot scrub mixtures, have them start decorating their mason jars. They should add labels to the lids and decorate their jars to represent their brands now, so they don’t get the jars dirty later!
After decorating the labels, you should also walk the girls through the process of attaching bows to their mason jar lids, so they don’t have to worry about it later. (You can check out how to do this by looking at the pictures on the next page)
2. Give each girl a bowl with the clear ingredients (sugar, co-conut oil, peppermint oil, and vitamin oil) measured out inside.
3. Have the girls divide scrub into two batches (using the two bowls) and use their SPAtulas mix a few drops of food color-ing in one batch.
4. Let the girls pour the scrub into the mason jars, alternating dyed and white scrub. They should pour one layer of the first color, followed by one layer of the next color, and keep alter-nating until the jar is full.

5. Twist the lids onto the jars, and tie the bows.
6. The foot scrubs are complete! The girls should wash their hands before placing the scrubs in their baskets.

GoalMake simple eye masks for sound sleep!
Prep- Create an eye mask pattern for each girl on a piece of card-stock.
- Cut two pieces of felt (per girl) in the same shape as the eye mask. This will be the back and middle (stuffing) of the mask. Girls will cut their own fabric or felt for the top layer.
- Cut strips of elastic that will fit snuggly but comfortably around the girls’ head (from ear to ear).
Time1 hour
Project Steps
1. Give each girl one of the templates you cut out earlier. Have them make sure the templates are the right size by having them hold the templates up to their faces. Make sure there is a space for the nose, and that the mask is big enough to keep light out on all sides. This will be their pattern.
2. Hand out fabric or felt for the eyemasks. Pick colors that are soft and colorful.
3. Lay the fabric flat and have the girls carefully trace their patterns onto it and cut the shape.
4. Give each girl two pieces of felt. Have her stack these with her colorful, cut fabric as the top layer. Tuck each end of the elastic between the layers (at least 1-inch in). Glue all of these together using fabric glue.
5. Now embelish! Add sequins, rhinestones, ribbons or other

fun crafty bits. For girls who can sew, add a whip stitch in a colorful, contrasting thread around the edge of the eye mask.
Here are the instructions for the instructors/counselors who are sewing:(A) Arrange the eye mask so the piece the girl cut out is lying on top of the 2 felt cut-outs you made during Prep time.(B) Spread a thin piece of fabric glue around the edges of the mask, so the top layer and the 2 felt cut-outs stick together. While doing this, also glue the ends of the elastic piece into the mask, so they are sandwiched into the mask.(C) Sew the mask around the edges, so the mask’s top fabric piece is attached to the three pieces of felt. Make sure the piece of felt at the bottom of this pile is soft enough for the girl to place over her eyes.
After the instructors have done this (either in class or during Instructor Prep Time), the girls can proceed on to the next step:
8. Play the Scent Guessing Game, so the girls can decide which scents to add to their masks. Then, have each girl add 1-2 drops of the scent she wants to her mask.
9. After the scent has been added, each girl can finish sewing her eye mask.
Please make sure to remove any pins before trying on your eye mask. Keep it for yourself or give it as a gift with some relaxing spa items. Enjoy!

Scent Guessing GameAn easy way to decide what scents to pick!
GoalsIntroduce the girls to the scents you have at your disposal, while also helping them narrow down their choices for scents in certain projects!
Game idea by instructor Victoria Bell. :)
Time 15 minutes
Prep- Place one drop of a scent on four popsicle sticks. Make sure you only get one scent per stick, and each scent has four sticks.
- Write the name of each scent on the back of the stick, and cover them with a piece of washi tape (or similar tape), so the girls can’t see them! Make sure each tape is a different color!
Steps1. Divide the girls into four groups.
2. Write the possible scents on the top of a whiteboard, chalkboard, or piece of paper, leaving room to keep tallies for the girls’ votes.
3. Give each group of girls a stick with the same scent on it (marked with the same color of tape). Have the girls guess what the scent for that stick is. Keep tallies of the girls’ replies.
4. After the girls have tried each scent, have the girls vote on which scent they want the class to use in their project (eye masks, bath bombs, etc.). Then reveal what the scent on each stick was!

Prep- Cut ribbon in 1 ft long pieces.
- Measure out the proper amount of ingredients for the con-tainers you have so you know how much the girls will have to measure.
Time1 hour
Project Steps1. Girls should measure and mix (in her own bowl):–– 6 parts sea salt–– 3 parts Epsom salt –– 1 part baking soda.
(Ex: 1cup sea salt, 1/3cup Epsom Salt, 3 Tbs. baking soda)
2. Add 2 drops of lavender oil, 2 drops sweet orange oil (or use whatever scented oils the girls want to use; feel free to use the scent guessing game to decide)
3. Add a drop of food coloring to each mixture. (The girls can decide what color)
4. Tell the girls to mix well!
5. Add a spoonful of citric acid (1/2 as much as the amount of baking soda)
6. Use the funnel to help the girls pour their salts into their containers (mason jars work well). Add a pretty ribbon or label to the top.

GoalMake tasty lip stains that will dye the girls’ lips different colors!
Time1 hour
Prep- Heat coconut oil in the microwave for 5 seconds and then stir vigorously.
You don’t want to overheat it, it should not be in liquid form, but you could put it back in for another few seconds if it is too firm to move.
- Place a bowl of water and a bowl of sugar on each table, with a few 1/2 teaspoons for the girls to share.
Project Steps1. Have the girls decorate their labels in advance. Then, before proceeding, take the stickers back so they stay clean and dry.
2. Give each girl a bowl with her favorite kool-aid color inside.
3. Have the girls take a 1/2 teaspoon full of water and add it to their bowls.
4. After adding the water, each girl should mix the water and kool-aid to form a paste. The girls should also add about a pinch of sugar.
5. Have an instructor or counselor put a small spoonful of coconut oil into each girl’s bowl.
6. After each girl has coconut oil in her bowl, tell the girls to VIGOROUSLY mix it together. The gloss should start to thicken.
7. Girls should spoon the gloss (it will still be a little soft) into 2oz makeup bottles.8. Have the girls wipe the edges of the makeup bottles, then stick the bottles into the fridge for about 30-45 minutes.
9. While the balms are cooling in the fridge have the girls wash their hands so they can finish decorat-ing.
10. After the lip smackers are cool and solid, remove them from the fridge and give them back to the girls (with their labels).
11. Have the girls decorate and label the makeup containers before they place them in their spa bas-kets!

GoalMake a tasty lip stain using fresh fruits!
There are three different flavors of lip stains the girls can make, which each result in a different color.

Project Steps
1. Give each girl two bowls and a spoon.
2. Have each girl add the fruits necessary for whichever color she wants.
The color choices are as follows:
Light Red: 1/4 cup of pomegranate seeds Purple: 5 raspberries + 5 blackberries Dark Red: Beet juice
NOTE: Girls using raspberries and blackberries will need to microwave their berries for 30 seconds before proceeding.
3. Ask the girls to use their spoons to press the juice out of the seeds. Then, using the same spoons, separate the seeds from the juice by pouring the juice from the first bowl into the second bowl.
4. Have the girls add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to the juice. Then, MIX!

5. After the juice and coconut oil has been mixed, the lip stain will be complete! Have the girls trans-fer the lip stains into empty lip balm containers.
6. Add labels and allow the girls to name and decorate their new creations.

PrepWith the girlsVote on what flavor of lotion bar the class would like to make: Lavender, chocolate, or rose.
On your ownPlace 1 cup of coconut oil and 1 1/2 cups of beeswax per girl in a large pot.
If the girls want to make chocolate flavored lotion bars, reduce the amount of beeswax to 1 cup and add 3/4 a cup of cocoa butter to the original melted mixture.
If the girls want to make rose flavored lotion bars, add 1/2 a cup of shea butter to the original melted mixture.
Place the pot on either a hot pot or a stove on medium heat. Sir the mixture until melted. Distribute the final liquid into enough bowls for each girl.

Project Steps
1. Give each girl a bowl filled with the liquid you prepared.
2. If the girls are making lavender bars, have them add as much lavender oil as they would like. The girls can also add lavender buds to their mixtures, for decoration.
If the girls are making chocolate bars, have them sprinkle cocoa powder over the silicone molds be-fore proceeding.
If the girls are making rose bars, have them add as much rose or geranium essential oil as they would like. The girls can also arrange rose petals on their silicone molds before proceeding.
3. Using washable markers, have each girl write her name or initials on the outside of the mold sec-tion she would like on the silicon mold. (If the girls don’t care which bar she gets, you can skip this step.)
4. Have the girls pour their mixtures into the silicone molds. Each girl should pour her mixture into the mold she has labelled with her name.
5. Refrigerate the lotion bars for 10 minutes. Use this time to allow the girls to decorate their soap boxes or labels.
6. After the 10 minutes are up, the girls can remove their lotion bars and place them in their soap boxes or saran wrap containers. The girls should wrap the lotions properly and decorate their final creations!
TipsIf the girls’ mixtures start to harden before pour-ing, you can microwave the mixtures for a few seconds to keep them in liquid form.

PrepMeasure out the following for each girl, and place each sub-stance in a different bowl: 1/2 cup of shea butter 1/2 cup of coconut oil 2-3 tablespoons of cocoa powderMake sure you label each substance so the girls know which is which.
Project Steps
1. Give each girl a bowl and one of each of the pre-mea-sured ingredients.
2. Have the girls each place their shea butter and coconut oil in the pot.
3. Have an instructor or counselor melt the shea butter and coconut oil on the stove, before distributing it back into the girls’ bowls.

How Do Face Masks Work?
There are four main types of face masks:
Different types of face masks can affect skin in different ways.
Dry SkinHydrating masks often contain moisturizing elements like glycerin, dimethicone, hyaluronic acid and various waxy lipid ceramides that create a thin layer of protection over the skin.
Oily SkinCharcoal and kaolin clay in masks absorb and swell with moisture, drawing oil out of your pores along with dirt and impurities.
Dull SkinA buildup of dead skin cells or an uneven skin tone may be the culprit here! An exfoliating mask with enzymes like lactic acid or papaya breaks down the bonds between cells and helps peel the dead skin away. Brightening masks with antioxidants like vitamin C, licorice, kombucha, lychee, mulberry root extract and blackberry put a stop to melanin production and help fade dark spots and discoloration.
Sensitive SkinSkin prone to irritation requires a gentle calming mask with ingredients like niacinamide, which enhances the skin barrier so that redness and blushing is less likely to show. Ingredients like chamo-mile, feverfew and bisabolol inhibit the enzymes responsible for skin inflammation.
Acne-Prone SkinAlthough someone with acne may use several different masks to reduce oil, fade dark spots and battle inflammation, she can also benefit from masks that deep clean and help fight infection. Clay masks that contain keratin-dissolving salicylic acid act as extreme pore cleansers and exfoliants, while moisturizing antibacterial masks with honey hinder microbe growth.
Mature SkinAnti-aging firming masks typically contain antioxidants, which help prevent sun-related skin dam-age like puffiness and loss of skin elasticity by creating a barrier of protection against free radicals. They also often contain collagen boosters that encourage new cell growth and moisture absorption, making skin look plumper and younger.
Our MasksThe face masks we make at camp are known as cream face masks, and are applied directly on dry skin and removed using a wash cloth, or simply using water and hands.
The ‘Nana Mask we make at camp is a type of skin brightening mask, which is meant to hydrate, brighten, and lighten the girls’ skin. The honey in the mask has skin-lightening properties, kills bacte-ria, prevents acne and pimples, and moisturizes skin without making it oily. The banana in the mask also include the following vitamins, which affect the skin in different ways:
The Strawberry Face Mask is a great mask for getting rid of acne. The strawberries in the mask are a natural source of salicylic acid, which is a common anti-acne ingredient used to clean out pores and get rid of blackheads without over drying the skin. The strawberries also act as a natural exfolient, and the greek yogurt contains lactose enzymes, which dissolve dirt and nourish your skin.
Finally, the Edible Mud Mask contains cocoa powder, which contains antioxidants that can promote cell repair and cell damage prevention. The chocolate also contains Vitamins A, B12, B-complex, D and E, which are great for absorption of calcium, tissue growth, and releasing energy.

Project Steps
1. Give each girl a bowl, an empty drawstring tea bag, and a cardboard box.
2. Have the girls choose the herbs they would like to use by taking herbs from the bowls you laid out.
3. Let the girls return to their seats, then mix their herbs in their own bowls and then fill as many tea bags as they would like.
4. Ask each girl to write her name onto a cup, then line the cups up besides the hot water boiler. Ask each girl to place a tea bag she would like to try into her cup.
5. Prepare some hot water, and pour it into the cups. Return the cups to the girls so the girls can try their teas!
6. Have the girls place their unused tea bags into their cardboard boxes. Invite the girls to decorate their boxes to make their own tea presentations for their spa baskets.

Storytelling GameTry to come up with the wackiest story you can!
IntroHave you ever told a story that spiralled out of control? You might not have wanted it to, at the time. In this silly game, however, creating silly stories is the entire point!
The purpose of this game is to come up with the silliest story you can!
TimeAnywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour
Steps
1. Have the girls sit in a circle, and decide who will go first.
2. The first person will start the story by saying three words.
3. The person to the leader’s left will go next, saying the next three words in the story.
4. Keep going around the circle, having each person add three words to the story, until you reach the story’s end. Try to come up with the silliest story you can!
TipsDifferent girls are likely to react to this game in different ways. While some girls will try to create the longest story they can, other girls may find it funny to end the game quickly with an impromptu ran-dom ending.
To fix this, it may help to add rules to the game as it goes along, such as “The game has to go around at least one full circle before it ends!” or, “No one girl can end the game; the game can only end when at least two girls work together to find an ending that makes sense!”

SandmanA dreamy game about sleep!
IntroThe Sandman is a mythical character in European folklore who sprinkles magic sand on peoples’ eyes at night to put them to sleep and give them good dreams.
In this game, one player acts as a Sandman and must walk around making people fall asleep, as the other members of the group try to figure out who she is.

Steps
1. Sit in a circle or around a table. Pick a “chooser” to start the game.
2. The chooser should chant: “Eyes closed. Head’s down. While the chooser goes around.” After the chooser chants this, the rest of the girls should repeat the chant after her until the sandman has been chosen.
3. When the chooser has touched someone, that person is the sandman. The chooser then says, “Heads up. Eyes open. The sandman’s on the loose!”
4. The sandman makes people go to sleep by winking at someone. When someone is winked at, that person must openly and grandly fall asleep after 10 or so seconds, so no one can make a quick and obvious connection.
5. If someone thinks they know who the sandman is, they say, “I have an accusation to make!” If someone will second the accusation, they both say the name out loud on the count of three. If they don’t say the same name, both are asleep. If they say the same name, but are wrong, they are asleep. If the sandman puts everyone to sleep, the sandman wins.
6. The game continues until either the sandman is revealed or puts everyone to sleep.
TipsThe sandman does not have to wink at other players to put them to sleep. The girls can decide what they would like the sandman to do together.
A popular alternative is to have the players walk around and shake each others’ hands, and to have the sandman scratch her victims’ hands to make them go to sleep, instead of having her wink.

ChopsticksA simple hand game the girls can play in pairs.
IntroThis is a very easy game that girls can play in groups of two or more. All they need is their hands!

Steps
1. Have the girls team off in groups of 2 or more.
2. Both opponents must hold out one finger from each hand.
3. Pick someone to go first. The girls can do this through a simple game of rock-paper-scissors, or using eenie-meenie-miney-moe.
4. The first player taps one of her opponents’ hands with one of her fingers. The opponent must then hold out one additional finger on the hand that has been tapped (for a total of two) because the hand you used to tap them with had one finger held out.
5. Have the opponent tap one of the first players’ hands.
If they tap using the hand that has one finger held out, the first player must hold out one additional finger on your hand that they tapped (totaling two).If they tap with their hand that has two fingers held out, then the first player must add two fingers to her hand that they tapped (totaling three).
5. Keep taking turns tapping hands and adding fingers. When a hand has five fingers held out, that is called a “dead hand”. Put dead hands behind the player’s back. The person who reaches two dead hands first loses!

Popular bonus rules are as follows:
Splits Instead of tapping the opponent’s hand, you can split your hand, which counts as a move.
For instance, let’s say one hand has four fingers and the other has two. That equals 6. During your turn, you can “redistribute” those fingers, so that each hand has 3 fingers held out (you wouldn’t want to do a 5/1 split because then the hand with 5 would be a dead hand).
There are a few ways to govern splits:
- The players can split the finger count any way they want. If they have a 4/1 distribution, they can split that to 3/2. - The players can only split a finger count in half. If they have 2/0, they can split it 1/1. If they have 3/1, they can split it 2/2. If they have 3/2, they can’t split it because there’s no way to split five fingers in half. - A player can be allowed to “revive” a dead hand by splitting.
Nubs. A finger can be divided into two nubs, or “half fingers”. A nub is signified by curling the finger. Nubs are created by splitting an odd number of fingers. E.g. A 3/2 gets split into 2.5/2.5. This makes the game last longer.
Leftovers. Normally, if someone’s hand gets tapped so that they would have to hold up 5 fingers or more (like if someone with 4 fingers gets that hand tapped by an opponent’s hand with 3 fingers) they would lose that hand. With leftovers, that hand would remain in the game with 2 fingers (because that’s what’s leftover after 5). So in order to knock someone’s hand out of the game, you have to make it so their hand gets an exact total of five fingers, no more. If your opponent’s hand has 3 fingers, for example, the only way to make it a dead hand is to tap it with two fingers. If you tap it with three fingers, their hand will have 1 leftover finger and remain in the game.
Exact play. Players can only tap a hand if the total fingers doesn’t exceed 5. For instance, if your opponent has 3 fingers, you can only tap them with a hand with 1 or 2 fingers (and the latter would make their hand a dead hand). But you can’t tap their hand if yours has 3 or 4 fingers because that would make for a total over 5. This rule opens the possibility of stalemate, if both players have two hands of four points.

Hot HandsMove your hands before they’re slapped!
IntroThis classic game involves players trying to avoid getting their hands slapped! The game is played in pairs and is known by many names, including red hands, slap jack, red tomato, or simply the hand slap game.
Time30 minutes
Steps
1. One player (the “slappee”) places their hands palm down, hovering above the other player’s (the “slapper”) hands.
2. The slapper hovers her hands below the slappee’s, palms up. The two players’ hands should be barely touching each other, and all the hands should be around mid-torso height.
3. The slapper is on offense, and attempts to bring his hands over to slap the backsides of his op-ponent’s hands. This must be done with sufficient speed, because the slappee’s goal is to pull their hands away, and out of the area where the hands overlap, to avoid the slap.
If the slapper misses the hands of the slappee during the slap, then the roles switch. However, the slappee should not flinch too often, or else it might not be fun.
TipsAnother variation is where the slappee has their hands held palms together, held out at mid-torso height; the slapper then does the same with the tips of the fingers of both players hands around a centimeter apart, and then (with just one of their hands) the slapper tries to slap the backs of the slappee’s hands.

IntroThis is another classic game that can be played in pairs.

Steps
1. The girls play this game in pairs. The two girls repeat a hand pattern in which they slap each others’ hands twice (first with one girl’s palms up and the other girl’s palms down, and then switched so the other girl’s palms are up and the first girl’s palms are down), and then clap three times.
This pattern is repeated once between each line of the following chant:

The category can be anything the girls choose: Animals, celebrities, etc.
2. The girls must then take turns saying things that fit into this category. (E.G. If the category is, “Ani-mals,” the girls can say, “Dogs,” “Cats,” “Fish,” etc.)
3. The first girl to mess up the rhythm of the game, or to repeat something a player had previously said during the game, loses!

Truth or DareWhich will you pick?
IntroThis is a simple game in which the girls ask each other if they would like to answer a question truthfully, or complete a challenge, instead!
Time30 minutes
Steps
1. First, have the girls sit in a circle, and decide which player will go first.
2. The first player must ask another player in the circle a question. The player can be determined by the leader or through eenie-meenie-miney-moe. The player can also be determined by spinning a bottle in the center of the circle and asking a question to the person the tip of the bottle points to when it stops spinning.
3. When a second player is chosen, the first player asks, “Truth or Dare?” The second player than has to decide whether she would like to complete a challenge (“Dare”), or answer a question truth-fully.
If a dare is not completed, there will be a penalty that will be decided by all participants in the game. For example, if someone refuses to do a dare, the group may decide that player cannot blink until next round.
If a participant chooses Truth, he or she must truthfully answer a question given by the player who had completed the last challenge.
4. After the participant has completed the truth or dare, it becomes her turn to ask another player, “Truth or Dare?”
5. Girls continue to switch off asking each other, “Truth or Dare?” until every player has been asked at least once, and/or until the group gets bored.
TipsFor an exciting game of Truth or Dare, 5 truths per person is recommended. It is up to the players to decide if there will be limited or unlimited amount of truths for each player.

IntroThis is a fun game that can be played in a group!

Steps
1. The girls should sit in a circle and pick who will go first.
2. The first person should say, “Never have I ever....” and say something she has never done.
3. If anyone else in the group has done that thing, they should raise a finger on one of their hands.
4. After every person has decided whether or not she has done the thing, the next person in the circle will say “Never have I ever....” and something she has never done. If anyone in the group has done that thing, they should add a raised finger to their hands.
5. When a person in the group raises all ten of her fingers, she is “out”. The game repeats step 4 until everyone is out, or until the girls get bored.
