major stormwater diversion drainage work has been completed, and works continue on a maintenance access track in the Council’s reserve adjoining Stage Five to facilitate the clearing and help with the revegetation and rehabilitation program. Clearing has been completed in Stage Five and bulk earthworks have commenced.

This July, GemLife Woodend will celebrate the much-anticipated opening of the resort’s beautiful lakeside country club. We look forward to sharing photos of the new facilities and beautiful interiors in the next issue of The Gem. Work on the outdoor recreational precinct has begun, including the bocce and pickleball courts, as well as the barbecue pavilion.

Last month, residents enjoyed the final GemLife Eats meal delivery as we said goodbye to this popular initiative which was set up in April to aid in social distancing and reduce trips to the supermarket. For the GemLife Eats finale, we had a special surprise planned, with compliments from the chefs and the GemLife team (see page 14).

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all our generous residents and staff who donated to the Cancer Council Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in May. Together, we raised a fantastic total of $5373, the best response we’ve had to a fundraiser to date and an incredible effort, especially since the usual large gatherings couldn’t take place due to restrictions. What a terrific effort by all!

Director’s MessageWELCOME TO THE JULY ISSUE OF THE GEM. THIS MONTH WE PUT THE SPOTLIGHT ON FRIENDSHIP IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FRIENDSHIP ON 30 JULY. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT FRIENDSHIP IS IMPORTANT TO OUR HEALTH AND DOZENS OF STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT GOOD CONNECTIONS AND SOCIAL SUPPORT IMPROVE HEALTH AND EVEN HELP US LIVE LONGER.

GemLife resorts are designed to provide plenty of opportunities for social interaction and friendship in order to create a close-knit community. We hope you enjoy reading some of the stories of friendship we share in this issue - from friendships new, old and rekindled to friendships between our four-legged, furry residents.

Last month, construction momentum continued strongly across all GemLife sites. On the Sunshine Coast at GemLife Maroochy Quays, it was full steam ahead with works on the resort’s lakeside country club, timber boardwalk and outdoor pool precinct, which will include a pool house and barbecue area. There was also good progress on the managers’ residence, expected to be completed this month. The team is also excited for the upcoming GemLife Maroochy Quays Display Homes Grand Opening on Saturday, 18 July (see page 30 for details).

At our premium resort, GemLife Pacific Paradise, we celebrated a terrific milestone last month, with our first residents moving into their new home. Congratulations Tony and Rita! Residential construction has been powering ahead and we look forward to more new home owners moving in over the coming months. The managers’ residence is also coming along beautifully and is due to be completed by October.

At GemLife Bribie Island, installation of stage two of the resort’s biological floating wetland treatment system is complete. The next step in our lake management plan is the installation of pumping stations for water recirculation, in addition to desilting works. With the further easing of restrictions in Queensland, we are also excited about the GemLife Bribie Island Stage Four Display Homes Grand Opening on Saturday, 25 July (see page 22 for details).

Civil works on GemLife Highfields stages three and four continue to power ahead,

Yours sincerely,

Adrian Puljich Director & CEO

Fast friends

The pair were introduced by a member of the GemLife sales team when Catherine first moved into the resort. Catherine had just had a major hip surgery and was unable to walk her dog and Vikki, who’s dog had passed away not long before, volunteered to help.

“We’ve only known each other a short while but we hit it off straight away. We quickly discovered we have a lot in common, we’re similar ages, we’re both from England and have similar backgrounds and we both like to travel,” said Vikki.

Quickly finding common ground, Vikki wasted no time finding the perfect bonding experience.

“I had only been living in the resort for about a week when Vikki invited me to go on a cruise,” said Catherine.

In December they headed on their first trip, a cruise to Papua New Guinea and the Conflict Islands.

Not long after their return, the gal pals started planning their next big adventure.

“A few weeks later we were out shopping and

VIKKI MULLAN AND CATHERINE PENDALL KNEW THEY WOULD BECOME THE BEST OF FRIENDS FROM THE MOMENT THEY MET AT GEMLIFE BRIBIE ISLAND LATE LAST YEAR. IN THE SHORT TIME THEY’VE KNOWN EACH OTHER THEY HAVE ALREADY STARTED TRAVELLING THE COUNTRY AND EMBARKING ON NEW ADVENTURES.

discussing holidays and we saw an advertisement for trips to Hamilton Island,” said Vikki.

“Vikki sort of surprised me. About fifteen minutes after we got home from the shops, I got a call saying that someone had booked a holiday,” said Catherine.

The duo took their second trip in March and returned just in time for coronavirus lockdown. But the pair already have another trip in the pipeline, a trip to Tasmania in October.

“We connected very quickly. Vikki had lost her husband not long before moving to GemLife. I lost my husband ten years ago so I knew what she was going through. I explained that what she was experiencing was normal and there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and she’ll come out of it and when she does she’ll have a rave old-time,” said Catherine.

The friends have been making the most of the resort joining the social committee and helping out with events such as Australia Day and Saint Patrick’s Day.

“If I hadn’t met Cath, I think I would have just retreated back into myself, especially after the lockdown due to coronavirus,” said Vikki.

“We managed to stay connected throughout lockdown, and we meet in my garage every morning to have a chat and people who walk past are always welcome to join or we have happy hour drinks together in the afternoon.”

Though the friends have a lot in common, the story of how they came to live at GemLife couldn’t be more different.

“Last year my husband Brian was quite ill and before he passed away we discussed where I would live when he was gone. I didn’t want to stay in the family home on my own, it was too big and would be too difficult to maintain and he wanted me to be in a secure place,” said Vikki.

After Brian’s passing, Vikki decided to go back to the United Kingdom to spend some time with her family.

“I saw an advertisement for GemLife in the newspaper. I phoned the number and the sales

team sent me some brochures and I took them with me. My family assured me that moving to GemLife was the right thing to do,” said Vikki.

“After doing my research I knew that I wanted to live in a Serene home and I wanted a corner block. There was only one available and I knew it was meant to be because the house number was a number that had been with me my entire life, so I put money down there and then.”

“This is where we really differ. I did no research and wasn’t even planning to move to GemLife,” said Catherine.

Catherine was in her garden when a couple approached her and offered to buy her home.

“They offered me a good price and gave me 48 hours to think about it. The next day I came to GemLife and put my deposit down and eight weeks later my house was sold,” she said.

“As soon as I walked in I knew that this is what I wanted. I haven’t regretted my decision for a second.”

Puppy love

They’re smitten with

each other. Toby follows

her everywhere and they’re

just really good mates.

The best of furry friends

For GemLife Woodend canine residents Charlotte, a three-year-old rescue Greyhound, and Toby, a six-year-old Boxer, becoming puppy pals seemed destined from the day Charlotte walked past Toby’s house with her owner, Bob Jones, just over nine months ago.

According to Brian Krutli, Toby went “berserk” that day, and Charlotte acknowledged the attention with a purposeful bark.

Now the pair walk together nearly every day, with owners Brian and his new friend, Bob Jones.

“Toby bounces around and winds her up and then she takes off. It’s really cute watching him try and keep up with her - he hasn’t got a chance. Watching Charlotte run at full speed is spectacular,” he said.

“She wins all the races,” laughed Bob.

FRIENDSHIPS TAKE ALL FORMS AND OUR FOUR-LEGGED FURRY RESIDENTS ARE NO EXCEPTION.

6 The Gem www.gemlife.com.au 7JULY 2020

According to Brian, Toby’s friendship with Charlotte has also helped make him feel more settled in his new home.

“It’s given him comfort. He misses her when she’s away,” he said.

Through their daily dog walks, Brian and Bob - who didn’t know each other before - have also developed a friendship.

“Dogs are a good conversation starter. We’ve gotten to know Bob and his wife Margaret. It’s a great start to the day and good to get to know someone like-minded like Bob,” said Brian.

Brian added that others get enjoyment from the dogs too, with one resident, a former Boxer owner who knows the breed well, giving the pair a Smacko when they walk by.

“Charlotte and Toby always look out for him and see it as part of their regular routine,” he said.

“I think more people know Toby and Charlotte than us! It’s all part of living here and it’s really terrific.”

THE GEM - JULY 2020

Combining his love of stamp collecting with his work with the Lions Club, Ross has raised many thousands to provide mobility for disabled children, funding specially designed walking frames.

The Order of Australia award came as a big surprise to Ross. “It was the furthest thing from my mind. It came out of the blue,” he said.

“The whole experience has been so humbling. My phone hasn’t stopped ringing and my family is so excited. It’s been crazy!”

A Lions Club member since the 1960s, Ross, a retired bank manager, has been a member of clubs in Papua New Guinea, New South Wales and Queensland.

Using his stamp collecting knowledge, Ross joined forces with another Lions Club member in 1992

to collect stamps and sell them as a fundraising venture, an initiative that took off.

In the past year the Lions Stamp Club collected 400kg of stamps that were sold mostly to Asian collectors at the Philatelic Association of NSW auctions, raising $50,000.

Money raised goes towards the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation to provide walking frames to children with conditions such as cerebral palsy.

“It’s lovely to see the kids getting out of their wheelchairs and being able to move on their feet thanks to special walking frames,” he said.

“They can be upright, they can move for the first time. It’s just amazing. It opens up a whole world to them.”

Ross is always on the lookout for stamps and with many new GemLife home owners going through the process of downsizing, there may be some unwanted stamps or stamp collections that Ross is more than willing to accept.

“We ask people sending stamps to clip around the stamp leaving about 4mm (1/8“) of paper around the stamp. Every stamp donated is sent to auction and every cent raised is passed on to the foundation,“ he said.

“If people don’t want them anymore, we will also happily accept unwanted collections, first day covers and post office packs. In fact, any items of philatelic interest.“

Currently a member of Tewantin Noosa Lions, Ross has held various positions at different Lions clubs including president, secretary, treasurer and regional

chairman as well as secretary and treasurer of the Australian Chapter Lions International Stamp Club.

If an Order of Australia medal and moving into a new home didn’t provide enough excitement, Ross and his wife Irene will celebrate a huge milestone celebration, their 50th wedding anniversary, next month at their new Pacific Paradise address.

“We can’t wait to move into our new home. We love the Sunshine Coast. The lifestyle is unbeatable,” he said.

If you would like to donate stamps, email Ross at [email protected] or post them to PO Box 9399, Pacific Paradise, QLD, 4564

GEMLIFE HIGHFIELDS RESIDENT ANGUS LANE OAM, WELL-KNOWN AS THE “VOICE OF THE EKKA”, RECEIVED THE HONOUR OF BEING NAMED ONE OF THE 2020 QUEENSLAND GREATS LAST MONTH FOR SERVICES TO AGRICULTURE.

Born and raised in Brisbane before he later headed to the bush, Angus has had a lifelong affinity for agriculture, starting in childhood when he sat in the stands at the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) watching arena events and admiring the special connection the announcer built between rural and city people.

“I feel honoured to receive the award, especially because it’s for services to agriculture. It is the first time the award has been given for services to agriculture,” said Angus.

“For people of the bush, it’s important for their contribution to be recognised.”

Angus fulfilled his dream of becoming Chief Ring Announcer at the Ekka in 1992.

The role of the ring announcer is to commentate and educate and from 1992 to 2007, Angus presided over the daytime activities and competition in the main arena at the show. After taking a break in 2008, he returned to the Ekka in 2014.

Angus has supported the Queensland show movement for more than 30 years ensuring the very best in professional announcing. His knowledge of

show competitors and exhibitors, particularly in the horse and beef sections is greatly admired and appreciated by the show movement nationally.

In 2013, Angus received an Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to agricultural shows. Angus has been involved in many community groups and was also named Queensland Father of the Year in 2002.

In its twentieth year, the Queensland Greats awards recognise and celebrate extraordinary achievements and life-time contributions by Queenslanders.

They are the highlight of Queensland Day, marking the day when the State of Queensland was proclaimed on 6 June , 1859.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the 2020 Queensland Greats shared a common traits-service to the community.

She said it was particularly pleasing that so many of this year’s recipients were from regional Queensland.

“Every one of our Queensland Greats has worked to make other people’s lives better, some after overcoming incredible adversity themselves,” she said.

“They display strength, courage, ingenuity, talent and determination – all of the things that continue to make Queensland what it is.”

Angus joined fellow individual 2020 Queensland Greats Bruce Morcombe OAM and Denise Morcombe OAM, Associate Professor James Morton AM, Betty Taylor, Nancy Bates OAM, Father Mick Lowcok and Richard (Darby) McCarthy OAM.

As a lasting tribute, each Queensland Great is honoured with a commemorative plaque displayed at Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane.

Angus, together with wife Vicki, plans to return to the show circuit next year with a busy announcing schedule.

On behalf of the GemLife team, congratulations Angus!

I’m very humbled. Agriculture is so important to me.

It’s always been my dream to build a

bridge between the people of the bush

and the city - to help create mutual

understanding.

THE GEM - JULY 2020

SIX YEARS AGO GEMLIFE MAROOCHY QUAYS RESIDENTS WAYNE AND JULIE WOODS AND RICK AND MARCIA EXTEN MET DURING A CHANCE ENCOUNTER AT A FRUIT SHOP AND HAVE BEEN THE BEST OF BUDS EVER SINCE.

“We met at a small local fruit shop in Mountain Creek on the Sunshine Coast and it was one of those chance conversations that went on for over an hour,” said Marcia.

“From that moment on, we’ve always referred to them as “our fruit-shop-friends” and it was the beginning of a wonderful, fun friendship.”

The Extens and Woods discovered they lived close to one another and quickly bonded over an abundance of mutual interests.

“Things just fell into place, we had lots in common like our mutual desire to travel with our caravans. We’ve gone on many caravanning trips together and have had countless breakfasts, lunches, dinners and more happy hours than we can count,” said Marcia.

While the group of friends all enjoyed taking trips in their caravans and exploring the world, coming back home had, over the years, become a comedown.

“We were tired of returning home from travels and immediately dreading the tasks awaiting us with a large home which had been vacant for some months. Cleaning the house, maintaining the yard and pool and settling back into “life” was getting more difficult and really we just didn’t want to do it anymore,” said Marcia.

Wayne and Julie’s five-bedroom home with a pool had become a hassle and they were ready for a new home that better suited their lifestyle.

“Julie and I had been considering a lifestyle change for quite a while. We’d looked at a couple of places but we knew that we wanted to live in the Sunshine Coast area,” said Wayne.

“Last March, we returned from a trip to Tasmania and Wayne and Julie came for a visit and told us about Gemlife Maroochy Quays,” said Marcia.

Not long after, the Woods embarked on a trip to Japan and the Extens dove into researching the resort.

“We’d decided that GemLife was the place for us before our trip to Japan but we didn’t want to start the process until we were back in the country,” said Wayne.

By the time Wayne and Julie returned, Marcia and Rick had already put a deposit down on their new home.

“We could lock-up and leave whenever we wanted, without the worry of a garden, yard and pool. We were also excited about the idea of meeting new people and making more friends,” said Marcia.

Less than two days after their return, Wayne and Julie visited the GemLife sales office and put a deposit down on a corner block site just a couple houses away from the Extens.

“That afternoon they were at our house, wine

in hand, to celebrate the start of our new life. Everything just fell into place. We had several “house planning” get-togethers, brainstorming variations, ideas and tips. We put our houses on the market on the same day, with the same agents and signed contracts of sale on the same days,” said Marcia.

We knew this was the right place for

us. The setting was perfect, the lifestyle

sounded amazing and the houses

were modern and well planned.

Great matesGemLife bromances

Bro’ bonding at Bribie

Clive and his wife Caroline moved to GemLife Bribie Island on a whim in 2019 and haven’t looked back since.

“We drove past the resort one day and decided to take a look. We loved it so much we didn’t even bother looking at anything else,” said Clive.

The Redgates and Lows bonded over beers and Gary was more than happy to lend a helping hand whenever he could to make the move easier.

After his wife’s health scare earlier this year, Clive said he was grateful for the friendliness and caring spirit of Gary and other residents at the resort.

“My wife was in the hospital earlier this year after catching coronavirus and during that time, while I had to isolate, Gary and a few others would buy our groceries and see if there was anything I needed,” said Clive.

“Gary has a heart of gold. While I was isolating Gary would come visit and I would sit inside

the house and he would sit outside and we would have a visit and a beer. After I finished my isolation period we would take turns going to each other’s garages every night.”

“That’s just what mates do,” said Gary.

The friends make the most of the facilities and scenery around the resort, enjoying fishing and bowling.

“We like using the cinema in the country club and we like to go for picnics by the lake, there’s always something to do,” said Gary.

The friends are excited for coronavirus restrictions to ease up and are hoping to celebrate with a trip to Longridge at the end of the year.

“We’ve just purchased a motorhome and as soon as Caroline recovers from her knee surgery we are planning a trip out west with Gary and Mary Anne so there’s a lot to look forward to,” said Clive.

GemLife is a really great

place. There are so many

wonderful people at the resort and

everyone helps those in need.

People genuinely care here.

The friends met on a mystery tour event for prospective GemLife home owners late last year before deciding to move to the resort.

They bumped into one another again a few months later at a home owners event where they discovered they would soon become neighbours.

John and his wife Marg moved into their home at the end of August last year, and Alan and his wife Denise moved in next-door in March.

“John and Alan are both fairly quiet and prefer visiting in small groups and working on the van and visiting the residents’ workshop instead of large social gatherings and events,” said Marg.

“We kept ourselves busy during the COVID-19 lockdown. Alan is a retired diesel mechanic so he offered to help me revamp my van,” said John.

As restrictions begin to lift and the Highfields country club opens back up, John and Alan and Marg and Denise are looking forward to making use of the facilities, playing tennis, bowling, snooker and darts.

HIGHFIELDS RESIDENTS, GARRY AND JEAN DWYER AND GREG AND HELEN SANDERSON, BECOME INSTANT FRIENDS AFTER MEETING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1989 AND THEIR FRIENDSHIP HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME.

“We’ve been neighbours on three separate occasions, it’s an interesting situation,” said Jean.

The Dwyers and Sandersons met and became neighbours for the first time when Garry and Jean built a home across the road from Greg and Helen in Toowoomba.

“Years after building that home we decided to sell it. Greg and Helen then sold us the block of land right next to them and we became even closer neighbours,” she said.

Years later the couples went their separate ways moving to different parts of the Toowoomba region, but their friendship didn’t end.

“We stayed good friends even after we stopped living next to each other and we continued to keep in touch and get together regularly,” said Greg.

Late last year the long-time friends unexpectedly bumped into one another on the streets of Highfields.

“Helen and I were walking down the street to take a look at GemLife and we bumped into Garry and Jean on the street and they came with us,” said Greg.

“We all ended up deciding on the same

day that we were going to move to GemLife.”

The Dywers moved into their new home in December while the Sandersons made the move to GemLife mid-June.

“There’s a lot of things we enjoy about GemLife. The facilities are wonderful and we love the country atmosphere,” said Jean.

“We are still busy moving in and everybody at the resort is very friendly. Our home is just a few doors down from Jean and Garry so we’re looking forward to being (almost) neighbours again,” said Greg.

The friends are looking forward to many happy years at the resort.

WHEN COUPLE TONY AND RITA HARNETT

DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO DOWNSIZE

FROM THEIR BIG TWO-STOREY FAMILY

HOME, THERE WAS NO DOUBT ABOUT

LIVING ANYWHERE ELSE OTHER THAN

QUEENSLAND’S WORLD-FAMOUS SUNSHINE

COAST.

Tony and Rita are GemLife Pacific Paradise’s very first residents and are excited to be moving into their beautiful, right-size home in an area they know well.

“We’re locals. We’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast for many years and there was no question that this was where we wanted to stay,” said Tony.

The Harnetts are already firmly entrenched in the area, having many local friends and their local church in nearby Maroochydore. In addition, they have worked as volunteers at St Vincent’s for about ten years.

“We know the area well and love it!” said Tony.

“We’re very excited. The Sunshine Coast has great shops and they’re just minutes away. The local shops are walkable which is great, and the beach isn’t far away either,” added Rita.

After looking at other Sunshine Coast over-50s estates, the pair was blown away by the quality of the homes on offer at GemLife.

“We were gob-smacked. The homes themselves are really well fitted out. The inclusions are far superior than the other resorts we looked at. And the service we received from Victoria was superb - nothing was too much for her,” said Tony.

Big caravanning enthusiasts, Tony and Rita say the on-site caravan storage at GemLife Pacific Paradise was a major plus.

“We’ve been doing caravan trips for more

than 20 years, including a six-month trip around Australia and lots of ‘free camping’. Caravan storage was a big, big plus for us,” said Tony.

The couple is also looking forward to the future country club and are keen to take up lawn bowls, use the pool and the golf simulator.

“The covered bowling green is fantastic. You need that in summer for sun protection, and in the wet weather too. It will be one of the only lawn bowls greens with a roof in the area. It was definitely a big draw,” said Rita.

Welcome to your new place in the sunshine Tony and Rita!

GemLife set out to donate $2000 but thanks to the generosity of our residents and staff, GemLife raised a total of $5373.

Despite not being able to attend large gatherings or host traditional morning tea events, residents got creative and rallied together hosting bake sales from their garages or enjoying a quiet cuppa at home.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan thanked the GemLife community for their creative fundraising efforts.

“We commend GemLife residents for once again tea-ing up for the cause and supporting the 145,000 Australians diagnosed with cancer each year,” she said.

“GemLife’s generous support will help fund Cancer Council’s lifesaving research, prevention, programs, advocacy and support services.”

GemLife Director and CEO Adrian Puljich said the Biggest Morning Tea fundraising event was fully embraced by eager residents and staff who were

keen to show their support for a cause that affects so many each year.

“The entire world is going through incredible challenges and it’s so important we all support each other as best we can. Some of our residents are cancer survivors and others have family or friends who had, or currently have, cancer, so everyone was keen to do whatever they could to support this cause,” said Adrian.

“Residents went above and beyond to show how much they care.”

GemLife’s Cuppa for a Cause photo competition received countless submissions ranging from a quiet cuppa at home, to decadent high teas with friends.

Congratulations to Mary Paschko from GemLife Bribie Island, Eileen Wiseman from GemLife Highfields, and Stewart Reid and Annette Meeks from GemLife Woodend for winning our Cuppa for a Cause photo competition, earning themselves a $50 Coles Myer Gift Card each!

Send us snaps of your favourite

GemLife moments for our ‘A whole new life’

photo competition

From photos of pets, wildlife, local hotspots and hidden treasures in the area, we want to see your favourite GemLife moments.

Our GemLife ‘A whole new life’ calendar competition has been getting tons of beautiful pictures from resort residents over the past couple of months.

Each month one winner will be chosen from across all GemLife resorts, and at the end of the year, twelve photos will be selected to be featured in a GemLife 2021 lifestyle calendar.

GemLife Director of Sales & Marketing, Andrew Coulter, said the competition is a great way for current and future residents to share their new life experiences with others and explore their artistic side.

“GemLife is full of creative residents and is home to a number of professional and amateur

photographers. We’re looking for anything from the ordinary to the extraordinary, what we really want to see is what residents love most about their GemLife community and surrounds,” he said.

While photos do not need to be professionally taken, all photos should be high resolution and submitted in 2meg, jpeg format. While residents will be credited in the calendar, GemLife reserves the right to alter or re-use any submitted photos and winners are not guaranteed a photo in the calendar.

Monthly winners will receive a complimentary bottle of wine!

The competition will run until 30 September 2020, with all submissions to be sent to [email protected]
