JULIETTE GORDON LOW

• Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon was born on Halloween of 1860 to Nellie and William Gordon.• She had 5 siblings

It’s a girl!

As A Child

• She and her cousins started an organization called “The Helping Hands” they sewed clothes for the poor

• Nicknamed Daisy by her uncle

Education• Went to many boarding schools in Virginia and New York.

Married Life• Married to William Low on December 26th, 1886

• Had no children

• Husband died just before their divorce

The Girl Scouts

• 18 girls formed first to Girl Scout troops• Quote- “I’ve got something for the girl in Savannah and all of America and all of the world, and we’re going to start tonight,” she said to a distant friend.

•June 1913- National Office opened in Washington, D.C.

• 1916- moved Headquarters from D.C to New York City

• Served as president of GS from 1915-1920

• Juliette Gordon Low died on January 27, 1927 at age 66 from cancer

Death

Hall of Fame

• On October 28, 1979 Juliette Low was inducted into the National Woman’s Hall of Fame in Seneca, NY.

• 1992- Daisy was honored as one of the first Georgia Woman of Achievement
