Art sparks great debateDo animals have the same moralrights as humans?

The battle lines have been drawn. The stage is set. Get ready for Welling-ton Shire’s rumble of the year. The Great Debate, is coming to the Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale, on Fri-day, September 14, 7pm.

Gippsland Grammar and Maffra Secondary College senior students are prepar-ing to explore the ethics of keeping wild animals in cages in direct response to current exhibition, Animal Kingdom.

Later, local identities from a variety of back-grounds will go head to head as they argue for and against animals having the same rights as humans.

The local identities de-bate will be between local artist, Dawn Stubbs; local Vet, Ben Mielke; and ap-prentice chef, Krystal Davi-son.

With both sides disagree-ing with each other on these topics it promises to be a thorough but entertaining

debate about a subject that is of increasing interest to the public and education institu-tions alike.

Darren McCubbin will chair the debate while Elyza Day, the 2012 runner up at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival will be the Master of Ceremony on the night. Local Artist, Clive Murray-White will provide a pictorial commentary dur-ing the night.

Latrobe City Shire News

Parks Victoria and Gu-naikurnai are delighted to announce the opening of new tourism assets at two of West Gippsland’s popu-lar parks- Tarra Bulga and Morwell National Parks.

Following on from the major redevelopment of the Tarra Valley Day Visitor Site in 2011, two new view-ing platforms have just been completed at Tarra Bulga National Park, which will add further appeal to the park which is frequented by thousands of visitors each year.

The ever-popular Corri-gans Suspension Bridge is now accompanied by a new lookout platform, which provides spectacular views of the elongated bridge, Mountain Ash forests and cool temperate rainforest of the Strzelecki Ranges.

Parks Victoria Ranger in Charge Mr Andy Gillham said the lookout has been made accessible for visitors of all abilities.

“A new viewing platform is also complete that will en-able visitors to safely access and view the beautiful Cy-

athea Falls, which is located in the southern area of the park”, said Mr Gillham.

The $186,000 project to construct these two view-ing platforms at Tarra Bulga National Park was made possible due to a combina-tion of funding including the Victorian Bushfire Recovery fund.

Furthermore, the comple-tion of these two viewing platforms finalise the overall $722,000 investment by the Commonwealth and Victori-an State Governments Bush-fire Recovery fund.

The Tourist Railway have agreed for the judges to have a carriage for their journey to complete the tasks and also the press and radio etc. will be invited. It was great to hear from all four Tourist Railway sta-tion communities that they would accept the challenge for one of these prizes. The competition is to create a win win situation and was the idea of the Korumburra Com-munity Development and Action Incorpora-

tion (K.C.D.A. Inc.) to help the Tourism in the area and assist with the Tourist Railway. Many of the Railway volunteers come all the way from Melbourne to volunteer their services.

To coincide with the judging on the 4th November Korumburra is to have Commu-nity Open Gardens finishing at the Poowong Scultuer Park.

The garden walk will cost $10.00 to view three gardens finishing with a sausage siz-zle.

All proceeds from the day go back to our Community.

More information can be found, by call-ing (03) 5657 3350.

Bass Coast Shire News

Bass Coast Shire Council has formally supported establishing a Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve, which includes Smiths Beach, Woolamai, Summerland and Cat Bay

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dow-man, said Council was proud to support the recognition of these special places.

“Phillip Island is well known for great surf and a strong surfing culture,” said Cr Dowman.

“The Reserve will recognise the quality of waves and the importance of Phillip Is-land surf spots to the local and national surf-ing community.

Surfing is a lifestyle as well as a sport and this reserve is one way to acknowledge the contribution surfing has made to our com-munity.

We are very proud to be able to support

the working group in their effort to preserve and protect these areas by encouraging pride in the beaches.”

The working group who proposed the re-serve is made up of representatives from the Phillip Island community, Phillip Island Na-ture Parks, Bass Coast Shire Council, DSE, Surfing Victoria, Phillip Island Boardriders and Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

Council’s Acting Planning and Environ-ment Director, Alison Creighton, said the declaration of the National Surfing Reserve is primarily about recognition and celebra-tion.

“The way these areas are managed and legislation will not change,” explained Ms Creighton.

“But the idea is to foster a sense of pride and ownership of these special places, which will help protect and preserve them.

4 artists - 16 pieces,all award winning art!

The work of four award winning local artists will be on show at the Corinel-la and District Community Centre in the first week of September.

“There will be 16 amaz-ing pieces on display,” said Cr Dowman. “This is a fan-tastic opportunity to come and see work by our talented local artists.”

The artists were selected at community art shows over the last year.

“Each of the artists in the exhibition won awards at a local art show to secure their spot in this exhibition,” ex-plained Cr Dowman. “As well as the piece that won the local art show, they are able to include three other pieces to display.”

The four artists display-ing work are John Adam, winner of the Phillip Island Artist Society Cup Weekend Exhibition.

Nicolas Day, won his

award at the Corinella and District Community Centre Traditional Art Show.

Judith Garde won her award at the Inverloch Art show in March of this year.

Adrian Johnson won his award at the Bass Coast Art-ists’ Society Easter Exhibi-tion.

A panel of art profes-sionals will select one piece from the sixteen on show to be awarded the Bass Coast Art Acquisition Prize.

Spirit, Mind & Body

Talkin’ about arevolution, sounds, like a whisper

Have you heard about it? Have you seen it on the internet? Have you wit-nessed it on the streets? The Revolution?

The immortal words of singer Tracy Chapman, “talkin about a revolution ... sounds, like a whisper” certainly ring true with this new breed of social media/internet/spiritual revolution.

It’s coming from all sides, if you’ve noticed it. The stu-dents are in on it, the average suburbanite, and last but not least, the “new age” spiritu-alist movement has also cot-toned onto the apparent cor-ruption and abuse of power by those ruling classes.

But let’s go back to the basics, back to the reasons why there would be such a massive online movement to overthrow what appears to be legitimate, democrati-cally elected governments in our Western civilisations.

What is causing millions and millions of Westerners world-wide to be so discon-tented with their govern-ments to cause movements such as the “Occupy” move-ment, Zeitgeist movement and many others.

After much investiga-tion, I’ve found there to be a deeper, more humane reason for the rejection of our cur-rent form of governance.

After talking to students, youth, baby boomers and average citizens, I’ve dis-covered an underlying dis-contentment with the way things are. A discontentment that goes deeper than per-sonal opinions and personal comforts.

This “movement” or rev-olution, is rejecting the cur-rent beliefs of “every man for himself.” They reject the idea that “we’re alright mate,” in our comfy 3 b.r. home in suburbia.

It seems, the consumer societies are waking up to the horrors of how and where their products are be-ing made.

Asking questions of how can we, as a nation or collec-tive of people, allow others on our planet to suffer from starvation, war and oppres-sion?

How can we sit quietly by, watching corporations control government policy?

How can we accept a cheap television set when those making it are working in appalling conditions?

This appears to be a revo-lution against the practices of non-empathetic corporate citizens destroying the lives of millions of others on our planet. All for their profit!

Profit has become a so-cially acceptable norm. If it makes a profit, it’s moral.

The internet generation doesn’t seem to see it this way, and has been able to shrug off the main stream media conditioning.

They no longer get their news or information from the six o’clock news, instead prefering alternative news sources. Getting the whole picture instead of a filtered message, censored by big government and business.

The entire planet is suf-fering at the hands of those wishing to make a short term profit. This includes murder (disguised as war), and theft (disguised as taxation).

99% of the population on this planet has been con-vinced they’ve only been born to work, pay taxes to the State, and submit to au-thority. The next generation is breaking this mould.

I like it, i’m thinking ... Viva la revolution!

If you’ve noticed a bunch of guys wining and dining around Gippsland every Queen’s Birthday Weekend, then you’ve probably met this group.

They’re a mixed bunch of individuals from various professions, who meet every year over the long weekend, for a “mens” get together.

This year they were pho-tographed at the Sale Cobb & Co Market complex, checking out the market at-mosphere with it’s many and varied local stalls.

From left to right is Alan, Ben, Mik, Alan, Ken, Jack and Peter.

Their professions range from a CEO, a technical salesman, a draftsman, a traffic engineer, a wine mak-er, an ambulance driver and an IT expert.

Their theme for their get togethers is activity based, with plenty of good food, wine and lots of laughter.

This year they stayed at Seaspray, on the 90 Mile Beach, wining and dining their way through Gippsland

Mates for food & wine

After being closed for renovations, Floating Dragon has re-opened its’ doors with a new menu that will excite your taste-buds.

As a must do restaurant whilst in Lakes Entrance, the Floating Dragon is the domain of chefs’ Julie Ting and Sheenie Hwang. Their approach to Cantonese cui-sine provides an exciting va-riety of authentic and mod-ern dishes, all drawing the maximum of flavour from the very freshest of local in-gredients.

Floating Dragons’ unique position on the Western boat harbour at Lakes Entrance is a gem in a worthy setting. The Dining Room’s setting is simple in design; candle lit so as not to detract from the spectacular water views the restaurant is renowned for. Diners can sit comforta-bly into the upholstered oak dining chairs while watch-ing the local fishing fleet and wildlife pass by. Ruby red lanterns provide soft light-ing, with background music that is reminiscent of ancient China.

The standard of service is

impeccable, as one reviewer says “finally a restaurant providing five star service without the five star price tag”. He goes on to say that the “Waiters are well trained and hospitable”

The menu is exciting with plenty of options to choose from.

On a recent visit, I began with ‘Crumbed crab claws stuffed with prawn moose’... It was followed by ‘Aged fillet beef in Cantonese bar-beque sauce.

“Heavenly applebites, coveredin crispy toffeewith vanilla ice

cream.”To conclude my evening

I ordered a dessert of heav-enly apple bites covered in a crispy toffee served in a can-died birds nest with vanilla ice cream.

Mains are reasonably priced in the thirty dollar range however, portions are generous and could be shared if dining amongst friends and family. Every-thing is sensational from the plate to palate.

The use of rustic black serving ware adds a sense of authenticity that is visually pleasing. A concise but well planned wine list provides diners with an easy option to match food and wine.

It is great to see the use of local names such as the Wild Dogs’ Unwooded and Narkoojies’ Lily grace Char-donnay on offer as well as the award winning Sarsfield Estate Pinot to name a few. Their beer range is equally as exciting with a great se-lection of locals made avail-able from the Bruthen Bull Ant Brewery.

Home & GardenSharyn Munro discov-

ered a warzone in regional Australia after spending nearly a year visiting the country’s coal mining com-munities. She observed what’s really happening at the ‘coal-face’: towns and districts are dying, and people are hurting, rebel-ling, and ultimately paying the price for the nation’s mining boom.

Throughout her journey, Sharyn spoke to numerous people affected by mining. She listened to stories of homeowners and farmers being forced out of town-ships, broken in spirit and in health, or else under threat, their lives and properties in limbo as they battle the might of huge mining com-panies developing ever larg-er mines and prospecting for new coal deposits or coal seam gas.

She exposes the real story of coal in her life-chang-ing new book, Rich Land, Wasteland, presenting an impassioned account of the human price individuals and communities are paying for the coal rush.

Incidences of asthma, cancers and heart attacks show alarming spikes in communities close to coal mines and coal power sta-tions. Once reliable rivers and aquifers are drying up or become polluted, once

fertile agricultural land is becoming unusable. But the big mostly foreign-owned coal mining companies con-tinue to push on with their coal rush and government continues to assist and pro-tect them: ever more mining licences are granted, ever bigger mines are opened. In this life-changing book, Sharyn exposes the real story of coal: how people

are hurting, and rebelling, as coal pushes into hitherto un-thinkable areas; how the true costs outweigh any benefits; and how all of us will ulti-mately pay the price.

“I wrote this book to share with Australians what I ex-perienced and learnt. Most Australians, I believe, are decent people who would be appalled by what is going on if they knew.”

Our very own Hazelwood Power Sta-tion has made it to Change.org.

Hazelwood is Australia’s dirtiest power station. Commissioned in 1959, Hazelwood is old, inefficient and out-of-date. It’s time to replace this old clunker with clean, safe and reliable energy that can deliver new jobs and investment for Victoria.

With the right support, new investment across Gippsland can lead to new indus-

try opportunities for workers and the local community.

Environment Victoria is campaigning for the Federal government to deliver on their promise to close 2000MW of our dirtiest power stations such as Hazelwood and de-liver a real transition plan for workers.

Community Gardens - sharing a vegie patch

Lake Tyers Beach Community GardenImage courtesy www.coffscommunitygardens.org.au

Community Gardens are not only excellent places for growing veggies, fruits and flowers, but also for creating social connec-tions and releasing stress.

Gippsland has it’s share of Community Gardens in the most unlikely communi-ties.

The initial reason for starting a community garden was because of the lack of outdoor space for unit/apart-ment dwellers in larger cit-ies.

A community garden gave these urbanites an out-let for their gardening pas-

sion and a way of connect-ing to others in their local communities and suburbs.

Now, the idea has caught on with both large and small communities alike.

Lake Tyers Beach, in East Gippsland, has a thriv-ing community garden. They allocate a garden bed to each person, or local community organisation.

Then, along with com-mon areas for growing fruit trees and berries, all the participants share the work load.

Regular working bees are facilitated by their commit-

tee, headed by David and Elle Locke.

Other gardens take a dif-ferent approach, by having no personal garden beds, but instead an entire garden open to all willing to con-tribute.

Yinnar and District Com-munity Garden was begun several years ago, and has progressed into a thriving community of local garden-ers, all eager to participate.

They hold regular free workshop days, focussing on subjects such as Sustain-able Garden Design.

Wonthaggi Community

Garden is also flourishing, with a family day recently attracting 35 people willing to get their hands dirty. They learned about germinat-ing seeds and propagating plants.

Many gardens use their own produce to raise much needed finances for tools, mulch, posts and plants.

David Locke, from Lake Tyers Beach explains that their raspberry crop, being very successful, has assisted the Garden for the last 12 months.

“We tend to give our fel-low gardeners first option in buying the communal fruit at low prices, and if we have excess, we’ll try the local traders,” said David.

If you’ve been con-sidering going Solar, but confused by the red tape and technical jargon, then Green Way Projects may be your new best friend.

Director Matthew Rigby says “Improving technology and new products has seen the uptake of solar energy systems grow at an astonish-ing rate”.

With innovation driving change, customers often ask, how do we keep up?

By installing Solar Panel Photovoltaic (PV), energy users can reduce, or even erase ongoing power costs and usage from the electric-ity grid.

Green Way Projects pro-vides sustainable solutions by performing in home as-sessments. Our local Gipp-sland consultants will pro-vide analysis of your energy usage and recommend the right solution.

Green Way Projects be-lieve by investing in high quality systems, it will in-crease the power created and deliver a much longer life-span for the unit. They only provide products that are fully certified, and meet industry standards.

The systems we install

are backed by product war-ranties of up to 25 years and are from long established manufacturers.

Our experienced staff are local to your area and provide the best custom de-signed solar solutions to fit your needs and budget.

By installing solar pan-els you can generate clean, renewable electricity at home, which will reduce your power bills for years to come. You can even sup-ply surplus energy back to the grid, therefore crediting your account.

There are grants and sub-sidies available and you may be eligible for a Federal Government rebate towards the cost of your solar sys-

tem. Also, there is an ongo-ing State Government based incentive in the form of a feed-in-tariff.

This means, that if your solar system generates more electricity than you can use, then it feeds it back into the main electricity grid, giv-ing you credits on your next electricity bill.

Green Way Projects can tell you if you are eligible for some or all the incen-tives.

Electricity prices have increased significantly in the last three years - a trend which is widely predicted to continue, so contact us today on 1300 556 924 for com-prehensive and professional advice.

Gluten Free Batterbrings joy back toFish & Chip feasts

About 12 years ago, Guy Plateau, from Lakes Entrance was looking for a new product he could create. His reasons being, competition in the fast food industry was cut-throat and he was looking for something dif-ferent to focus his attention on.

First Guy tried playing around with different combinations of flours, when preparing his batter mixes in L’Ocean Fish & Chips, Lakes En-trance.

Without any great successes, he then happened to be discussing it with his doctor.

His doctor’s suggestions led him to start experimenting with different versions of a gluten free mixture.

At the time, there was not much interest in gluten allergies or their re-actions with different people. Gluten free dietry requirements were not as popular or well known.

After a few samples had been cre-ated, Guy sent them off for testing with the Coeliac Society.

Upon receipt of Guy’s samples they taste tested them and were pleasantly surprised.

Their first orders were for sending our samples to their clients, number-

ing at the time, only a few hundred Australia wide.

Since then, production has in-creased one hundred fold and Coe-liac sufferers Australia wide now purchase and insist on Guy’s original Health Wise Batter Mix.

About one year ago, Guy sold his business to Bill Boros.

Bill has been eager to continue Guy’s commitment to providing a healthy alternative to traditional bat-ter mixes sold by take away food out-lets.

Bill has not only continued the project, but increased distribution throughout the country considerably.

When you now order your fish and chips, if you see the Health Wise logo, make sure you request a “glu-ten free batter please.”

Full details on Health Wise Batter Mix can be found at www.crispybat-ter.com.au.
