GIMP is an acronym forGNU (pronouncedguh-noo) Image Manipulation. TheGIMP is a multiplatform tool suitable for avariety of image manipulation tasks,
including photo retouching, imagecomposition and image construction.
The first version of the GIMP were writtenby Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball.
Wilber is the official mascot of the GIMP.

1. The Main Toolbox:It is the heart of GIMP.This toolbox contains the highest level menu,and a set of icon buttons that can be used tomanipulate image.
2. Tool options:It is located below the mainToolbox and it shows options for the currentlyselected tool.
3. An image window:Every image open inGIMP is displayed in a separate windows.
4. Layers Dialog:This dialog window showsthe layer structure of the currently active
image, and allows it to be manipulated in avariety of ways. .
5. Brushes/Patterns/Gradients:The layerdialog shows the dialogs for managing
brushes, patterns and gradients.

1. Brush/Pattern/Gradient:The symbols hereshow you GIMP's current selections for: the
Paintbrush, used by all tools that allow youto paint on the image; for the Pattern, whichis used in filling selected areas of an image;and for the Gradient, which comes into playwhenever an operation requires a smoothlyvarying range of colors.
2. Active Image:In GIMP, you can work with
many images at once, but at any givenmoment, one of them is the active image.

1.Title Bar:This bar show the name of theimage and some basic information about it.
2.Image Menu:Directly below the emphasisbar appears the Image Menu. This menugives you access to nearly every operationyou can perform on an image.
3.Menu Button:Clicking on this little buttongives you the Image Menu, except in acolumn instead of a row.
4.Ruler:In the default layout, rulers are shownabove and to the left of the image, indicatingcoordinates within the image.

1. QuickMask Toggle:At the lower left cornerof the image display is a small button thattoggles on or off the Quick Mask, which is an
alternate, and often extremely useful, way ofviewing the selected area within the image.
2. Pointer Coordinates:In the lower leftcorner of the window is a rectangular area
used to show the current pointer coordinates,whenever the pointer is within the imageboundaries. The units are the same as forthe rulers.
3. Units menu:By default, the units used forthe rulers and several other purposes arepixels.

1. Zoom button:There are a number of ways tozoom the image in or out, but this menu isperhaps the simplest.
2. Status Area:The Status Area appears belowthe image display. Most of the time, by default,it shows which part of the image is currentlyusing.
3. Cancel Button:This is used to canceloperations (example: complex and timeconsuming)
4. Navigation control:This is a small cross-shaped button at the lower right corner of theimage display. Clicking on it, and holding theleft mouse button down, brings up a windowshowing a miniature view of the image, withthe displayed area outlined.

1.Inactive Padding Area:This padding areaseparates the active image display and theinactive padding area, so you're able to
distinguish between them.2.Image Display:The most important part of the
image window. It occupies the central area ofthe window, it is surrounded by a yellow dotted
line to show the image boundary, against aneutral gray background.
3.Image Window Resize Toggle:If this buttonis pressed, the image itself will be resized if theimage window is resized.
