“We are committed to offering
a Gilmour education to a
wide economic spectrum of
qualified students whose
presence affirms our Holy
Cross mission of inclusiveness
and enhances the educational
experience of all.”
Brother Robert E. Lavelle, C.S.C.
This year marks a milestone in Gilmour Academy’s
history for it is the 10th anniversary of the
Blue & Gray Society, which recognizes the Academy’s
leadership donors. Through their support,
Blue & Gray Society members join us in our
Gilmour/Holy Cross mission and vision for
excellence in Catholic education and set
the pace for the Annual Fund. It supports our
daily work through the operating budget, which
makes possible an excellent education and keeps
it within reach for many families who entrust their
sons and daughters to us. We are committed to
offering a Gilmour education to a wide economic
spectrum of qualified students whose presence
affirms our Holy Cross mission of inclusiveness
and enhances the educational experience of all.
Since it was founded, we are pleased to report
the Blue & Gray Society has grown to 181 members.
It has a significant role in the Annual Fund, which
continues to exceed its fundraising goal. During
the 2010-11 fiscal year, the Annual Fund secured
more than $665,000, which set an all-time record.
Blue & Gray Society members generously provided
72 percent of the amount generated.
We are a faith-based community that is
purposeful and embraces a mission made
contemporary and responsive to the needs of the
times. Our mission and vision support a culture that
promotes instruction that is challenging, engaging
and intentional; a curriculum that provides content
and real-life application; and an education of the
whole person with an enthusiastic lifelong desire
to learn. Our mission and vision also provide a
foundation for developing the spirituality, critical
thinking and leadership that we seek to inspire in
our students as part of their moral formation. This
inspiration emerges from a school culture that
proactively teaches moral and ethical values during
important and critical years of our students’
development.
One measure of our passion, which provides
awareness and inspired leadership, is our annual
humanitarian mission to Honduras where students
volunteer to work at Nuevo Paraiso, a children’s
village that provides food, clothing, shelter and
education to Honduran children. Students are joined
by their teachers and family members, and several
years ago, Gilmour alumni began their own annual
mission trip. Gilmour also is celebrating the
10-year anniversary of our service program in
Honduras. During spring break 2011, Gilmour
volunteers poured the foundation and built support
columns for a new children’s home. The house has
been dubbed “Hogar Gilmour” (Gilmour Home), and

our alumni painted it during their service trip to
Honduras in July.
Like the families who avidly support our effort
in Honduras, Gilmour also has dedicated parents who
lend their talents to our educational experiences
and serve on our fundraising committees, the
Women’s Club, Men’s Club and Lower School
Parents Organization. I am always pleased to see
and speak to parents at Lancer athletic events,
concerts and plays.
As a member of our Gilmour Family, you make
it possible for us to educate students to be inspired
beyond self-interest and to foster a real sense of hope,
justice and optimism in the world. We are pleased
you join us in fostering new generations of givers,
“Education is the art of helping young people to completeness; for the Christian, this means
education is helping a young person to be more like Christ – the model of all Christians.”
Blessed Basil Anthony M. Moreau, C.S.C.
We appreciate the generosity of our loyal friends who made significant gifts during the 2010-11 fiscal year of $25,000 or more.

rather than takers. You share our vision, values
and commitment to excellence in nurturing and
transforming our students today and for generations
to come to be persons of great competence and
courageous leaders making a difference.
On behalf of Gilmour and our students, thank
you. You are so important in our achieving what
we do! Blessings to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Brother Robert E. Lavelle, C.S.C.

At a recent meeting of the Board of Trustees, I took
a moment to reflect on the lives of my recently
deceased parents, and to announce a generous gift
from their estate.
My siblings’ memories may be different, but
I recall that Mother and Dad were not prone to
sermons, as in “always work hard, always tell the
truth, etc.” Their way was to simply live their values
and let their lives be a lesson if anyone cared to pay
attention. Of course, we children had little choice
but to pay attention!
Among others, their prime values included
family and family harmony, hard work, a sense of
humor and the importance of fun with friends,
ethical behavior and faith. Their Roman Catholic
faith was the pillar around which everything else
revolved.
I want to focus on other values, Ownership,
Belonging and Responsibility, which in a way are all
intertwined. Whether it was their extended family,
or their parish or the institutions they valued, they
truly Belonged, and took very seriously their sense of
Ownership and Responsibility.
Choosing Gilmour Academy is but one
example out of many; they enrolled their four
sons because they valued an excellent education
in the context of a Catholic school. They were

role as Owners, can we fully
Belong, can we accept our
Responsibility to ensure a long
and successful future?”

Members of the Gilmour Family,
very active in the parents’ associations and attended
as many events as possible. They donated to the
Annual Fund. In later years, well beyond our
graduations, they generously supported our capital
and endowment campaigns, and finally provided for
GA in their estate plan. My parents loved Gilmour
and deeply respected the Holy Cross Brothers.
We can all learn from their examples, and we
must if Gilmour Academy is to reach its full potential
in the decades to come. As members of this Gilmour
Family, can we all accept our role as Owners, can
we fully Belong, can we accept our Responsibility to
ensure a long and successful future?
Many of us, a great many of us, have already
responded with an enthusiastic “Yes.” We need
many more to step forward. What is your response?

Not long after Gilmour Academy opened its doors to young men seeking a challenging and substantive education, Oliver Seikel ’55 began a new academic chapter in his life after spending eight years in convent boarding schools. “Gilmour was quite a
change,” he recalls. “My teachers at Gilmour challenged me to think, awakened in me an intellectual curiosity and gave me a healthy respect for my religion,” Seikel says. As a Gilmour Trustee and alumnus, Seikel says he “wanted to give something back to Gilmour for what it gave to me.” In 1988, he established the Josephine Weaver Seikel Scholarship Fund, named in memory of his mother, a single working parent who made sacrifices so that her son could attend and graduate from Gilmour. “I wanted to honor my mother, a working single widow, for her support and confidence in me in sending me to Gilmour,” Seikel says. When Seikel learned of the efforts Gilmour has made to financially assist qualified students with demonstrated need, he made an additional major gift to support the Seikel Scholarship. After graduating from Gilmour, Seikel earned a Bachelor of Science in Humanities and Engineering from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. He
also received a grant from the law school, financed by the Ford Foundation, to pursue postgraduate legal studies at the University of Hamburg. “My experience at Gilmour prepared me well for the challenges of the MIT curriculum,” Seikel said in 2005 when he received a Gilmour Alumni of the Year Award. He singled out the benefit of the Academy’s emphasis on analytical thinking and mentioned many of his teachers including Brother Albertus Smith, C.S.C, and his “stealth introduction of calculus into the senior math curriculum.” After Seikel’s retirement in 1997 from the active practice of law, he served as a resident liaison for the American Bar Association’s Central and Eastern Europe Law Initiative in Sofia, Bulgaria. He is a past trustee of the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and Catholic Charities Corporation and is an active civic leader. Seikel has been a generous supporter of Gilmour’s Annual Fund, Blue & Gray Society and all capital campaigns and he is an active member of Gilmour’s Academic Affairs Committee. Recently Gilmour established the Oliver E. Seikel Excellence in Science Award to recognize seniors who excel in science. Seikel views Gilmour as “one of the finest preparatory schools in the nation.” He believes that it provided more than an excellent education.“It instilled in me the sense that whatever I did for myself, I did for the community as well.” Seikel’s Gilmour experience made him realize that “Success is measured not by one’s personal accomplishments, but by what one does to make this a better world.”
Oliver Seikel ’55It might seem a bit unusual for someone who has spent his life and career in a scientific field to set up a scholarship to pursue excellence in English and writing. But to Sandy Aggarwal ’79, a neurologist at Northwestern University, the decision to honor the legacy of Brother Carl Shonk, C.S.C., was a natural one; Brother Carlmade a formidable impression on him ever since he took a course in Greek mythology as a seventh-grader. Brother Carl was a former English instructor, principal, Middle School director and served as Headmaster at Gilmour from 1969 to 1978. Recently, Aggarwal set up a scholarship fund in memory of Brother Carl. Each year, the scholarship, which is based on merit and financial need, will allow a Gilmour student to attend Northwestern University’s Summer Institute. Aggarwal sent his son, Rajan, to the institute where he enjoyed the coursework and remarked on the dedication and passion of the teachers. This reminded Aggarwal of his own experience at Gilmour with his English teacher.

Keeping alive the spirit of Glen Oak School and its philosophy of “Person, Service and Love” prompted the school’s alumnae to establish an endowment fund when Gilmour Academy and Glen Oak merged in the early 1980s. Each year a junior girl from the Academy is selected to receive the Glen Oak Scholarship Award to apply toward her senior year at Gilmour. Juniors are invited to write an essay on how Glen Oak’s motto is relevant to them. Leadership, extracurricular activities and service to school and community are considered, according to Mary Alexander Ray ’75, Glen Oak Scholarship Committee Chairwoman. “The scholarship was established to empower young women with an opportunity to fulfill their dreams,” explains Ray, a 1999 recipient of Gilmour’s Alumni of the Year Award. A former Gilmour parent, Ray’s daughters, Genevieve ’04 and Mary Madeleine ’09, and son, Colin ’05, all graduated from the Academy. Faculty and junior instructors nominate students with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher. Members of the Glen Oak Scholarship Committee, consisting of alumnae and the school’s former faculty, conduct blind reviews of the essays and interview semifinalists. Holly Rapp ’12, the 2011 scholarship recipient, is considering a career in international relations and already is a global ambassador. She spent her summer studying the Turkish language in Istanbul after she was awarded a U.S. State Department National Security Language Initiative for Youth
Glen Oak Scholarship Award “Brother Carl had a deep passion for teaching and believed that the spoken and written word should be carried out correctly and succinctly,” Aggarwal says. The Gilmour alumnus recalls the two years he spent “traveling with Ulysses en route to Ithaca and the painstaking lessons on diagramming sentences and writing compositions.” Aggarwal thought the middle school years would be an opportune time to “carry out Brother Carl’s legacy” and to offer the summer experience at Northwestern. Megan Porter, now a Gilmour freshman, was the first scholarship recipient. She studied speech and debate at the Summer Institute. The physician hopes that Porter and future scholarship recipients will share the knowledge gained at the Summer Institute with fellow students and teachers. “My hope is that this scholarship will serve as a conduit from Brother Carl to the Gilmour students,” he notes. Hopefully, the benefits derived from the summer coursework will carry over to the Gilmour classroom, or perhaps the scholarship recipient will apply the knowledge to a hobby or interest that involves writing or speech. The student might even return to Gilmour as a faculty member or become a college instructor one day.

Scholarship. Last spring Rapp participated in a State Department exchange program in Serbia and an International Partners in Mission trip to El Salvador. The Gilmour senior is active with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and Look Up to Cleveland. As a Gilmour Catalyst student, she was immersed in ongoing, long-term research to discover how science works, and worked on microbiology research at Case Western Reserve University. She is on the Honor Council, is treasurer of the National Honor Society and is co-captain of the Girls Cross Country team. In her scholarship essay, Rapp wrote, “. . . the most important outcome of my Gilmour education is not actualized within the confines of the classroom . . . ” but rather “how to be a person for others who serves with love and compassion.” Gilmour Academy will present an All-School Reunion during the fall of 2012 to mark the 40th anniversary of the first Glen Oak School graduating class. The event will be held in Gilmour’s Lower School, the former site of Glen Oak, for alumni, faculty and friends. To learn more about the Glen Oak Scholarship or reunion, please contact Mary Kate Farrar Vega ’93 at (440) 473-8009.

On June 30, PROMISE AND RENEWAL: The Capital and Endowment Campaign for Gilmour Academy concluded. The Campaign has made the much-needed replacement of our 50 plus-year-old pool and gym a reality and continues to help grow the endowment. The $15.5 million raised shows a remarkably high level of achievement – an inspiring commitment to Gilmour and our mission! More than 450 donors participated in this effort.
Gilmour Alumni from the Classes of 1988-2008 came through with flying colors to leverage the amount of their campaign gifts. Three years ago, the Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust challenged these alums to contribute to the campaign vowing that the trust would match dollar-for-dollar every gift commitment they made; 76 young alumni made gifts and pledges amounting to $252,409.
Many alumni stepped forward in appreciation of their days at Gilmour and their outstanding educational experience. They recognized that the Lennon Match allowed their gift to have a bigger impact on the capital campaign – especially after seeing what the Athletic Center could offer with its state-of-the-art gymnasium and natatorium. These graduates also were committed to helping shore up endowment. These resources help enhance the value and vitality of Gilmour’s campus facilities and demonstrate the school’s commitment to excellence.
As we begin to reap the gains from the PROMISE AND RENEWAL Campaign, we see the Athletic Center as an appropriate venue to showcase our students’ achievements. It increases our ability to provide proper instruction and competition; helps attract talented students, faculty and coaches; and supports the growth of our summer camp programs, which contribute to the Academy’s operations/revenue. For the first time last spring, Gilmour was able to hold Commencement in the Athletic Center and welcome back alumni for Reunion Weekend. This dynamic facility also provides a wonderful space for schoolwide gatherings affirming our Gilmour/Holy Cross traditions and the value we place on gathering together as a learning community.

Generations of graduates from Gilmour Academy work in meaningful careers made possible by the excellent educational experience thatmarked their years at Gilmour. Like today’s students and their families who value a Gilmour education, former graduates received scholarship and/or financial assistance from alumni and others who generously invested in the Annual Fund. Now they can pay it forward through Gilmour‘s new Generations Fund. It will create opportunities for a Gilmour education when families experience demonstrated need.
As part of our Holy Cross tradition, the Academy remains committed to offering a Gilmour education to qualified students who are mission appropriate. In the past, Gilmour has sought to close the gap for families with identified need when full-tuition cost was not within reach. Today, the Academy provides more than $3 million in aid to these students who will join the ranks of Gilmour alumni. Needless to say in today’s economy, this creates more than a significant stretch for the Academy’s available resources.
A Gilmour education is more than an investment because it gives focus to developing the minds and hearts of new generations of students. At the heart of learning is the relationship between student and teacher. Our current faculty/student ratio of 1:9 personalizes this experience so young people become fully engaged in the discovery of their talents. A Generations Gift to the Annual Fund sustains this cycle and strengthens our foundation.
Like their predecessors, today’s students aspire to high levels of achievement in college and in life through discovery of their voice and their passion. They are committed to living the Gilmour/Holy Cross mission. The Academy’s new Generations Fund will empower these students and those who follow to seek their personal best and be competent and courageous persons who reach out to others.

Consider a Matching Gift
You can make your gift more meaningful,
maximize your contribution and perhaps
even double its impact. Many companies
match gifts made to schools by employees,
retirees and family members. To find out
if your employer matches charitable gifts,

Every person who is reading this article needs a will. With a will we direct and control the disposition of the property we have accumulated over a lifetime. Without a will, we forfeit that control and allow the government to dispose of our property. Clearly, it is to your benefit to have a written will. All wills should be tailored to the needs of each testator. Some wills are quite simple while others may be highly complex depending on each person’s circumstances. Wills that direct our wishes successfully require planning and consideration. Here are some things to consider when planning your will. Give careful thought and serious consideration to what your desires are and what your expectations will be when you are no longer able to direct them yourself. Your will is the instrument that will secure this for you. Practical considerations are important and yet may differ among spouses. These items need resolution and can only be solved through careful thought and deliberation. Be certain to spend time with your advisors and seek their suggestions on what your will should do for you. They will need to know about your circumstances regarding your obligations, assets, income and objectives. By providing your advisors with accurate and complete disclosure, they will be better prepared to see that your wishes are realized. At this point you direct your specific wishes as to your beneficiaries, bequests, contingencies, guardians, etc. Be clear and complete with your desires.
You should always have your attorney draft your will. The attorney is experienced and educated about what should be included and specified in the will. Your attorney will raise good questions you will need to answer that you may not consider without the attorney’s involvement. The attorney will see that the will is written, signed and witnessed as required by law. You will also need to review your will. As time passes and conditions change within your family or occupation, your financial needs and objectives will change. You may need to add an amendment or codicil accounting for the new situation. Even if your situation may not change substantially, tax laws and other factors may change affecting your original plans. Lastly, you must keep your will in a safe location. Often the attorney will keep the original drafted will to easily locate it upon your death. Banks also provide a safe location for wills. Be certain that a responsible person knows its location and that the will is available when needed. Please contact Jim Farrar ’59, Director of Development, at (440) 473-8013 or [email protected] to discuss this further.

Ways to GiveGilmour Academy’s ability to thrive and to continue to be able to offer new generations of students an excellent education is due, in part, to its many loyal friends who donate their time, talent and financial resources to the Academy and its mission.
volunteerinG Many generous donors give their time and talent, and contribute directlyto the Academy’s success by enhancing our students’ experiences. Our volunteers spare no effort to generate and support exciting fundraising events – Gold Ticket Raffle, Fashion Show, Christmas Family Gathering, Golf Classic – which raise needed funds. Each of Gilmour Academy’s parent organizations holds a major annual fundraiser and smaller events. Alumni who volunteer as class agents strengthen the ties between the Academy and its graduates, which helps increase alumni support for the Annual Fund.
Gifts of PhilanthroPy
Annual FundThe cornerstone of philanthropy is the Annual Fund, which makes the most immediate impact upon our students. Its focus is to raise funds to help contain tuition costs by meeting a greater percentage of the Academy’s operating budget, and to provide need-based financial assistance to qualified students who otherwise might not be able to afford a Gilmour education. The Annual Fund is used to attract and retain a distinguished faculty, provide state-of-the-art technology and continue academic and extracurricular programs. What is the correct amount for an Annual Fund gift? The only gift that is too small is the gift of nothing at all.
Planned Gifts Making arrangements today for a future gift to benefit the Academy is a thoughtful gesture of gratitude that expresses your faith in our future. Planned giving can provide valuable tax benefits for the donor and provides Gilmour with substantial, meaningful gifts. The following are a few ways to make planned gifts:
BequestsThrough your will or living trust, you can provide a legacy for causes that were an important part of your life. A will allows the donor to maintain complete control of assets during his or her lifetime with the knowledge that those assets will be distributed in accordance with the donor’s plan and enacted upon death.
Charitable Lead TrustsA Charitable Lead Trust provides current income to Gilmour Academy for a fixed period of time. The assets of the trust are then returned to the donor or the donor’s designee. Properly structured, a CLT will allow assets to pass tax-free from one generation of a family to another.
Life InsuranceA gift of insurance that names Gilmour Academy as the irrevocable beneficiary provides a tax deduction equal to the replacement value of the policy. If you continue to make premium payments on the policy, those also are tax-deductible. To learn more about planned giving opportunities at Gilmour, please contact Jim Farrar ’59, Director of Development, at (440) 473-8013 or [email protected].

Gifts-in-KindThe Academy also welcomes donations of goods and/or services for which Gilmour would otherwise have to pay.
Restricted GiftsThe Restricted Gifts category includes contributions that a donor has designated for specific projects or programs, such as endowed and restricted scholarship funds.
Methods to donate
Cash Gifts of cash have an instant impact on the lives of our students because the Academy is able to put the funds to immediate use.
Credit Cards For your convenience, the Academy accepts MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express. You may call the Office of Institutional Advancement at (440) 473-8009 and use your credit card over the phone, or fill out a pledge form using your credit card. Perhaps the easiest method is to visit our secure website at www.gilmour.org and make a gift online. Your online gift allows the Academy the flexibility of immediately applying funds where the need is greatest.
Gifts of Stock An increasing number of donors are making gifts of securities to Gilmour, taking advantage of the tax benefits this type of giving allows. To ensure that your gift is properly acknowledged and designated, please call Gilmour’s Office of Institutional Advancement at (440) 473-8009 for stock transfer instructions.
Matching GiftsMore than 4,000 companies match the gifts their employees and retirees make to independent schools. Your gift can double or triple if your company or your spouse’s company participates in a matching gifts program. Contact your Human Resources Office to find out if your employer matches charitable gifts.
