Dear Brothers and Sisters,

 Happy 2nd

Sunday of Advent! I hope you are doing well. Just to remind you we are hosting Archbishop Rozanski on the

evening of January 29th

. He will be celebrating the 5:30 pm Mass that evening and blessing the Church addition. This is a great

reminder to bring up the Saturday evening Mass time change. There was a vote a few weeks ago in favor of altering the Saturday

evening Mass from 6 pm to 5:30 pm. However, it was not an extremely lopsided vote. Many people were in favor of keeping the

Mass at 6 pm. Therefore, we will be moving to 5:30 pm for the winter weeks beginning in January and switching back to 6 pm

when Daylight Savings Time begins again. So, the first 5:30 pm Mass will be Saturday, Jan 1st

and the 6 pm Mass should start

again on March 19th

.

This coming week we have the Feast of the Immaculate Conception! It is a Holy Day of Obligation. Because it is on a

Wednesday, the evening vigil Mass will be at 7:30 pm in the Church. Because the vigil Mass will be in the Church….all of the

regular adoration hours will also be in the Church this coming Tuesday, Dec. 7th

. We will also have Mass at 6 am and 8 am and

5:30 pm on Wednesday. Following the 5:30 pm Mass we will also host another annual ciderfest….along with the second apple

shoot.

That’s right. We will be shooting apples but not William Tell style off anyone’s noggin. We will use teeball stands.

Now, you might be dying to shoot an apple, but not really sure why you have that urge or why we should be submitting these fruit

specimens to such treatment. Think of the various statues of our Lady. Often you see her standing on a snake. And in some cas-

es, you will find an apple in the clutches of the snake’s mouth. (Disclaimer: we don’t officially know what kind of fruit the for-

bidden fruit was.) The meaning is that the Virgin Mary never fell into sin. This could seem like a theological problem. If Mary

never sinned, then how is she saved from sin by Jesus? He says that He came to save sinners. The Feast of the Immaculate Con-

ception celebrates the fact that she was saved by the grace of Jesus Christ from original sin during the beginning of her life when

she was conceived. In this way she is able to be the New Eve. If it seems problematic that a person could be given human life

without original sin, well Adam and Eve had this original gift, and now God is beginning a new creation. His new creation is not

a new physical world. In the physical world the original grace of paradise was already lost. Rather, God starts from within

within Mary’s soul by preserving her miraculously from the Fall. While all of us through baptism are raised up out of original

sin, as if from a pit, we can understand Mary as having been saved from original sin in her very conception. And she kept this

freedom from sin throughout her life. When Gabriel visits her, He calls her kecharitomene, which means “full of grace,” for she

had not lost any of her innocence, and was able to therefore share a perfect and unfallen human nature with Christ. She crushes

the evil of sin. We shoot apples and drink cider.

In other news, the annual school Christmas Concert will be December 10th

at 1pm. It will be online only. Please find it

on the school Facebook page and support our students in their performance entitled “Won’t You Guide My Sleigh Tonight.”

There are a couple more festivities on the horizon. Fig Fest with the accompanying figgy pudding competition will be

after the Saturday evening Mass on January 1st

to celebrate Mary, Mother of God and the Feast of the Holy Family. The follow-

ing Saturday, January 8th

is the Polar Plunge to commemorate the Baptism of the Lord. The plunge will be held at Union Memo-

rial Park at 10:30 am and the proceeds go to support our Helping Hands outreach program. As they say at least you’re “freezin’

for a reason,” and I guarantee that cup of hot cocoa afterwards will be the best you’ve ever tasted!

Christ is coming! May God bless you and be your Strength,

Father Foy
