This summer, Gift of Life Family House proudly welcomed its newest Founders’ Circle members, Robert V. Nicoletti—along with his children—Mark and Megan Nicoletti, Donna and Joseph Ferrier, John and Lori Peruto, Esqs., and his 11 grandchildren. Their decision to support the Family House stemmed from a personal connection to transplantation and their firm belief in the principle of “family first.”

On July 17, 2012 —the eve of the Family House’s first birthday—over 45 volunteers and guests gathered for a special birthday BBQ to celebrate one year of supporting transplant patients and their families. This evening served as an opportunity for staff members to recognize and thank the dedicated Family House volunteers, who have tirelessly supported the mission during the past year. No birthday party would be complete without a cake, candles and the traditional singing of “Happy Birthday.” Guests were treated to delicious gourmet cupcakes generously donated by the Sweet Box Cupcake Truck of Philadelphia.

“Lori is very much a global thinker and is willing to brainstorm on

the best way to achieve the mission of Gift of Life. We appreciate

her willingness to consider the mission from all sides and think

creatively – Lori is focused on saving lives and helping families.”

—Jan L. Weinstock, Esq., Vice President, Administration and General Counsel

Through her personal experience with transplantation, Lori has also gained a deeper understanding of the difficulties that transplant families often experience. In 2008, when invited to join the Gift of Life Family House Advisory Board, Lori gladly accepted. Ever since, Lori has been an essential member, assisting with Gift of Life Family House’s initiatives on many levels.

Lori has also involved her siblings in the mission of Gift of Life Donor Program, as well as that of Gift of Life Family House. Together, the Nicoletti, Ferrier and Peruto families have gone on to support numerous community outreach initiatives, including Donors Are Heroes’ various fundraisers, and have also provided partnership opportunities with local businesses and stakeholders. They continue to inspire the community to address the public health crisis surrounding organ and tissue donation by encouraging people to register as donors.

Their latest endeavor to support Gift of Life took place on July 23, 2012, when fifteen of Lori’s family members came together to present a very generous gift to the Family House.

“We are a very close family and the House is a natural extension

of our principle of ‘family first’! Whatever we do for the House is

a labor of love in support of that concept, and through that work

we reinforce the principle for our kids.” — Lori Peruto, Esq.

The families lovingly underwrote the Reception Desk and a Family Lounge in memory of their beloved mother and Robert’s wife, Beatrice “Bea” F. Nicoletti, who passed away in 2009.

We thank the Nicoletti, Ferrier and Peruto families for their continued support, as well as all of our Founders’ Circle members who have generously given gifts to support Gift of Life Family House.

If you are considering making a gift to the Family House, please contact Sara Cohen, Development Coordinator at 267-546-9812 or [email protected]. Dedication opportunities are still available.

The Family House depends on donations from the community to help keep our guest pantry full. When you’re out shopping, please remember us and consider picking up a few items from our pantry wish list. Donations may be dropped off at the Family House between the hours of 8am-8pm, Monday through Sunday. While you’re there for the drop-off, ask for a Family House tour and one of our staff would be happy to show you around, and let you know about all the ways your support is helping transplant families.

In lieu of pantry items, financial contributions marked “Wish List” are also greatly appreciated. Please make checks payable to Gift of Life Family House and mail to 401 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123, or go to www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org to make an online contribution.

Each year, Blank Rome LLP’s summer associates participate in a Philadelphia-based service project. This year, the Center City law firm was thrilled that the project involved the Home Cook Heroes program at Gift of Life Family House. The Home Cook Heroes program is an excellent team-building activity that directly benefits those with real and urgent needs.

Participating in the Home Cook Heroes program alongside the summer associates was Kari Knight Stevens, an attorney at Blank Rome and a recent living donor. Kari donated a kidney to her father on November 17, 2011 at Lankenau Medical Center. Kari impressed upon the group the emotions of supporting a loved one in need of an organ transplant and how Gift of Life Family House provides the invaluable services of lodging, meals and support to

patients and their families. These logistical necessities that help transplant families care for their loved ones are often overlooked; however, through the work of Gift of Life Family House, caregivers can give the support they need to their loved ones receiving first class medical care in the Philadelphia region.

it’s never too early to teach children the importance of giving back and the joy of helping others in their time of need.

this fall, as you help your children adjust to the new classes and schedules of the 2012 school year – keep in mind that the Family House has several opportunities for student involvement. By choosing to get involved with the Family House, students and teachers will be supporting Gift of Life Family House and the transplant families we serve while helping to increase awareness in the schools on the importance of organ and tissue donation.

School volunteer programs can be tailored to fit the needs of each student body. Participation can range from hosting

a wish List drive, a dress down day or a coin collection in school – to taking a field trip to the Family House and volunteering for a few hours or even a full day. Student volunteer opportunities at the Family House range from baking, cooking and arts & crafts to preparing family welcome kits and personalized welcome cards.

the possibilities of student involvement are endless and we look forward working with your child’s school. we would be happy to have a Gift of Life representative come to your child’s school to make a presentation.

For more information about school involvement, please send an email to Sara Cohen, development Coordinator at [email protected]

when did you first hear of the Family House? When my mom was unconscious on life support at at the hospital and my father and I had nowhere to go.

How long was your stay with the Family House?Three months.

How has the Family House impacted your transplant experience?Words cannot express the amount of pressure and stress this place has relieved from our family during this critical moment in our lives.

what is your favorite feature of the Family House? There are a lot of wonderful features, but the most comforting is knowing we’re always welcome and we’re always met with staff who are sincere about making us feel at home. There is never any worry about finding a hotel during a time that is already stressful.

How is your transplant experience today? It is an ongoing roller coaster ride. It has gotten significantly better, but it is a treatment that is manageable, as opposed to a disease that is not. My mom’s transplant has given us a new respect for life. So many things are taken for granted, not a single day, a single word, or a single breath should ever be taken for granted – we know that now.

How has the Family House helped you and your family during your transplant experience? They provided us with the basic essentials for life and so much more. They have social workers on hand, and a team of staff members that care for your well being. Staff members that help you when you don’t have chocolate chips and you want to make cookies all the way

to staff members who are willing to proof read your “thank you” letter to the organ donor’s family. A staff that is truly selfless.

How was the Family House able to help you during your mother’s transplant? The transplant experience has given us all a greater appreciation for life. In one moment everything can be taken away, and you have no control over that. It is best to attempt to control the things you can—like your character. We have become a “pay it forward” type family, because we have received more help than can ever be repaid.

what do you wish other people of the community knew about the Family House?I wish people knew how much volunteers mean to them, and just how important their cause is. It is embarrassing when I admit

that I knew nothing of organ donation, Gift of Life, or this place and what it did until my mom received her double-lung and heart transplant. Being on the other side of that is frustrating, knowing the need and not being able to explain why it is so important can be exhausting. If the community knew just how much the Family House did for families, they would never hesitate to help.

what would you like to say to the staff and volunteers who work at the Family House? This place is a home to many. It is beautiful, but it is simply a building, made out of brick. The staff is what makes it a home. They are the people who fill it with joy.... You are the people that fill it with joy and happiness – which I might add is a challenging thing to do in your profession. What you do takes a certain type of person – most of the time the people who are your guests are going through a world of turmoil, fear, and pain and you use your character and personality to bring smiles to their faces. You are selfless.

The Clink Family

The Clink family was one of several families who have stayed at the Family House during its inaugural year. Samantha Clink, whose mother received a life saving double-lung and heart transplant in January 2012, shared her transplant journey and how the Family House staff helped her family through one of their darkest hours.

FacesOF THE Family House

the Clink family is just one of the many families affected by organ donation and transplantation. By supporting the Family House, you have the opportunity to assure families like Samantha’s have a place to call home during their transplant experience. we encourage you and your family and friends to get involved today!
