WINTER 2012 A publication of the Saint Raphael Foundation

A devotion to family and children has shaped Carole Brown’s life, and now that devotion is helping Saint Raphael’s make a dream come true.

A gift from Brown – mother of three, grandmother of four and resident of Branford and Vero Beach, Florida – has enabled Saint Raphael’s to complete the planned renovation of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Brown’s donation will help buy equipment and remodel the unit to provide a more private, quiet environment for newborns and parents. Her gift, along with proceeds from the 2011 Miracle Walk and other fundraising, has jump-started NICU renovations.

Saint Raphael’s NICU cares for approximately one in four infants born at the hospital each year. With a highly-trained and specialized staff, the NICU delivers advanced care for premature babies born as early as the 28th week of pregnancy and infants who are ill and need specialized care.

The renovation of the NICU

follows the recent $2.2 million renovation of the new Dr. Romeo A. and Lena B. Vidone Birth Center, which Saint Raphael’s opened in January 2011.

Carole Brown’s generosity has her following in the footsteps of her parents, the late Alice and Irving Brown of Branford.

“My parents thought of Saint Raphael’s as a very special place,” Brown said. “When they got to a point in their lives where they could give back, they donated funds to benefit new mothers here at Saint Raphael’s.”

“Carole is an extraordinary benefactor of Saint Raphael’s and has become a close friend,” said Sister Joan Granville, president of the Saint Raphael Foundation and vice president for Mission Services of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System.

“We are very grateful for Carole’s generosity to Saint Raphael’s and for her ongoing support and trust,” said Saint Raphael President and CEO

Christopher O’Connor. “This gift is about new life and helping our tiniest, most vulnerable patients. It truly reflects Carole’s interest in making a difference in people’s lives and in the care we provide at Saint Raphael’s.”

For additional information about the Vidone Birth Center or the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, please contact 203.789.3029.

The Saint Raphael Foundation has much to celebrate! Stewardship, building trust and generating revenue for equipment and operations continue to be the mantra for the good work of our generous donors and trustees. Under the leadership of Michael Giordano, Foundation Board chair, donors contributed $2.8 million in gifts and pledges in 2011.

We see our benefactors’ funds at work throughout the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Of particular note in

2011 were activities supporting Women’s and Children’s Services:• Through the generosity of Dr. Romeo A. Vidone, the Dr. Romeo A. and

Lena B. Vidone Birth Center became a reality. Births increased by 2% in 2011, with patients recognizing the family-centered care provided by our clinical team and the spa-like atmosphere.

• The Foundation helped fund the rigorous requirements for “Baby-Friendly” designation. Saint Raphael’s is the first hospital in New Haven County and just the fourth in the state to receive this prestigious designation.

• Many of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) alumni/ae participated in our first Miracle Walk last September. The walk raised important dollars to upgrade the NICU. Generous donors helped fund new infant cardiac monitors, incubators, medical infusion pumps and other equipment. In 2011, the Father Michael J. McGivney Center added a new Elekta

linear accelerator. The linear accelerator produces, monitors and delivers radiation waves to cancer cells with greater accuracy. The equipment cost $2.2 million, funded by donors to the Hope & Healing Cancer Campaign.

Foundation donors also helped offset equipment acquisitions throughout the Saint Raphael Healthcare System, including improvements to the Sister Anne Virginie Grimes Health Center. Donor restricted funds were used to pay for nursing education, geriatric assessments and various equipment needs.

As we move into 2012, the Foundation continues to seek donor support. Particularly exciting are efforts to raise funds for the new daVinci Si® HD surgical robot. The new da Vinci® features a fourth robotic arm, high-definition technology and a dual console. These features allow greater precision for surgeons and quicker recovery time for patients. Foundation trustees viewed the new da Vinci® robot, prior to its use on patients. This $1.8 million strategic acquisition supports our growing Robotic Surgery program. Initially, the new da Vinci® will offer cutting-edge procedures in the colorectal, urological, gynecological and thoracic service lines.

Finally, a special mention about our Special Events Committee, which always plans fabulous activities that bring the Saint Raphael extended “family” together. The Committee chose “Come Together” as the theme for the 2011 Crystal Ball, and it was an outstanding celebration.

The Foundation has much to be grateful for, thanks to the generosity of our community of friends who believe strongly in Saint Raphael’s mission. Thank you for being part of our family.

Romeo Vidone, M.D. receives Grimes Award for Philanthropy

More than 270 walkers generated over $34,000 for the first Miracle Walk 5K in September at Meadowbrook Park in Hamden. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Dr. Romeo A. and Lena B. Vidone Birth Center.

Sponsored by People’s United Bank, the Miracle

Walk featured a 5K walk, fun children’s activities, raffle drawings and live entertainment. Leading the Walk’s planning committee was Vanna Dest, A.P.R.N., oncology nurse practitioner at the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care, whose experience chairing walk events for the American Cancer Society inspired her to plan the benefit for Saint Raphael’s.

“Vanna Dest has a deep commitment to the mission of Saint Raphael’s,” notes Lucy Sirico, executive director of the Saint Raphael Foundation. “Her boundless energy is evident in the care she provides to her patients at the Father Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care and extends throughout the community. Vanna is a ‘do-er’ who pulls together staff and community volunteers to benefit Saint Raphael’s.”

Saint Raphael’s NICU cares for approximately one in four infants born at the Hospital each year. Plans are underway for renovations and technology upgrades to provide a more private, quiet environment for newborns and parents. The NICU renovations follow the $2.2 million in renovations for the new Dr. Romeo A. and Lena B. Vidone Birth Center at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, which opened in January 2011.

Giant steps for tiny patients

Romeo Vidone, M.D., is the 2011 recipient of the Sister Anne Virginie Grimes Award for Philanthropy, recognizing his outstanding service and commitment to Saint Raphael’s mission and the patients served. The award was presented at a reception attended by Presidents’ Circle members and other major benefactors.

Long a generous benefactor, in 2010 Vidone committed $1 million toward the redesign and renovation of the Labor and Delivery area of the Department of Women’s and Children’s Services. This extraordinary gift was made as a tribute to Vidone’s late wife, Lena, and resulted in the naming of the Dr. Romeo A. and Lena B. Vidone Birth Center. The state-of-the-art unit boasts spa-like services and décor, and family-friendly amenities.

“We are extremely grateful to Romeo for his long service as an excellent, dedicated clinician, and for his strong commitment to our mission, reflected in many ways including through his charitable support,” said Sister Joan Granville, president of the Saint Raphael Foundation. “We are blessed to count Romeo as an important member of the Saint Raphael community and pleased to bestow the Sister Anne Virginie Award for Philanthropy to him on behalf of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth.”

There were many winners as a result of the 2011 Raffle & Auction, yet the ultimate “winners” are Saint Raphael’s patients who will use the services and equipment supported by the more than $110,000 raised.

More than 800 hopeful raffle ticket holders and guests attended the June 2011 event. Activities included an expansive silent auction for fine jewelry, dining packages and sporting events; a 50:50 raffle drawing worth $3,690 in cash; and the raffle drawing – with eight ticket holders winning Visa™ Gift Cards with values from $1,000 for eighth prize to $25,000 for first prize. Highlighting the evening’s festivities was a live auction led by Eric Hummel that offered 17 one-of-a-kind items, including luxury box seating at Yankee Stadium, private cruises aboard a 47-foot motor yacht and back-stage access to “The Today Show.”

Special thanks to First Niagara, 2011 Presenting Sponsor, and to Edward N. Kaufman of Orange, Raffle & Auction chair; Live Auction Chair Sunny Jean Luciani; Silent Auction Co-chairs Barbara De Natale and Ellen Aversa; and 50:50 Chair Lorraine D. Cronin.

“Beatlemania” grabbed a hold of guests at the 2011 Crystal Ball, which raised over $88,000 in net proceeds. Chaired by David Fusco, president and CEO of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut – this year’s Presenting Sponsor – the Ball received generous support from New Haven’s corporate and medical community.

The black-tie bash treated party-goers to entertainment by Beatles’ look-a-likes that transported guests back to the small clubs of Liverpool, England, where John, Ringo, Paul and George first performed 50 years ago. Ball guests also took part in an auction that offered vacation getaways, concert tickets, celebrity access and courtside seating for UConn Huskies basketball.

Special thanks to United Illuminating Company/Southern Connecticut Gas, Diamond Sponsors, and to Fusco Corporation, People’s United Wealth Management, Space-Craft Manufacturing and the Knights of Columbus for supporting the event as Emerald Sponsors. Physician support was led by gifts from Connecticut Vascular Center, New Haven Radiology Associates, and Dr. John and Ellen Aversa.
