An abstract painting of our journey through life, White Line on Linen follows the path of a welcome swallow as it flies below the roof inside an old town hall. In her abstract and minimal style, Melbourne artist Tory Burke wanted to depict the concept that we never follow the same path more than once. To this end, none of the lines in this work ever repeat, because we never have the same journey more than once.

The use of a white line creates a gentle contrast with the colour of linen to create a feeling of peace and tranquility. Tory painted this work to music to find an even flow and rhythm in the brush strokes, so she could infuse the artwork with a raw and tribal essence.

Tory studied Art and Design at Melbourne School of Art under Robert Gill, 1992-1995. She has a passion for art and the aesthetic. She loves her home country Australia, especially its native flora and fauna. So inspired by the environment and its species she has also studied horticulture specialising in the indigenous species.

Trained with the traditional method of oil on canvas and linen, Tory has developed interesting painting techniques including the use of the palate knife, scratching into the painted canvas and the dripping and bleeding of glazes. These techniques creates a luminous irradescence in her Abstracts and a sparkling sea shimmer in her Rockpools.

Pink on Pink is from Tory’s evolutionary Flow Series, which maps the journey of water. In this moving piece, water drips and flows across Australia’s hot, dry landscape until it’s path becomes blocked and it must change direction.

She has developed interesting techniques including the use of the palate knife, scratching into the painted canvas and the dripping and bleeding of glazes. Her Rockpool and Abstract series use a lot of glazes and bleeding of paint. This technique creates a luminous irradescence in her Abstracts and a sparkling sea shimmer in her Rockpools.
